Which is fine, but not everyone is you is my point. What will ultimately drive me away from AOC is that the game is poorly designed for world PvP and that is what I want the most out of a game. If I wanted some eye candy graphics I'd just go play a single player game which does it better than AOC in the first place. From a purely PvE standpoint it works great as well, it just doesn't work for PvP. So for some people it is just fine, for me and many other players it is a pretty big issue. All depends on what you want out of a game.
NO, you and a HANDFULL of other players. 95% of the player base in EA are thoroughly enjoying the game. Just because theres a remote few that have to be LOUD and PROUD about not liking it, doesnt make it set in stone for the rest of us. Thanks for playing though...
Kyle man, wow. Do you like grinding? Do you like. . . top down 2d graphics? How about all the armor looking the same, or crappy sounds.
These were all parts of great games. If no one ever complained about them, no one would ever try and find a better way.
Just because someone doesn't like a certain aspect of a game doesn't mean they need to leave. I mean, I bet FunCom would be pissed if they were reading your threads telling people to shut up and not play. They want that subscription, and that subscription pays for future development.
I want there to be no loading screens, and great graphics. I think that will come from games like AoC that have loading screens, finding ways to minimise them and make the loading times very small. And games like WoW (if they ever do start working on graphics), that find better ways to stream the loading content, while making the graphics better. Somewhere, in the middle, we'll have both worlds.
I'll shoot the next idiot that calls WOW seamless. I do game dev work. It's not seamless. It's a classic design trick called tunnel zoneing. You actually zone to the next area half way before hitting the zone wall. It downloads slightly in the background to prepare the files. This is why dated machines will take performance hits while getting near zone lines. You couple the games tunnel zoneing with low requirements and small file sizes.. then you now have trick zoneing. It's easy as hell to do. I've done it in a few test games I made. It's NOT seamless. So stop calling it seamless. You're just being fooled. I also fail to see how one can even remotely consider it open world as it is not. Each zone is not physically connected to one another. You're being warped to a different cluster on the same server going though generic static portals located a long zone lines. It's dated technology that should be thrown in the garbage by now. It forces you to degrade visual and physical innovation for a poorly designed zone system. If AoC zone style isn't for you. Then pack your bags and get the hell out. I rather take 10 seconds to zone then stare at pile of crap cartoon artwork for my game time.
Go ahead and shoot. Laugh. Attacking design choices made in one of the most successful game ever released makes me wonder. Haven't been doing it for long, eh?
Saying that you've coded a similar effect and therefor can speak with authority is like saying you've visited Asia because you've seen it through photos posted on the web. Having made a prototype or drawn up pseudocode is nice, but until you actually have the experience of full implementation... it's simply conversation. The devil is in the details.
It doesn't matter what technology drives the effects. End user perception is what sells. "Fooling" the consumer is what efficient programming is all about. You optimize and find places where you can "cheat" or use near perfect approximation with the code in order to keep processor cycles down. Count yourself blessed that you enter the industry when cpu and gpu processing power is widely available.
Ever purchase an epic flyer in Wow? It's truly one of the most spectacular features of the game. Static and fixed portals when one flies over the mountain, eh? Right. Possibly one of the most impressive elements of their "dated" zone handling design is how it permits players to kite and train mobs from one end of the continent to the other, across several zones. The ability to pass along player data between zone server is a fundamental requirement for the game to work - being able to pass mob data falls under what I'd call a real neat trick.
I haven't played AoC yet and firmly believe that it should be judged on its own merits. However, to lash out and tell people to pack their bags because they rightfully dislike a technical design decision made by Funcom's dev team, well, you'd best have a talk with your producer again about what pays your salary.

QFT, If AoC was as revolutionary as is claimed, they would have developed a way to create the illusion of a seamless world better than what currently exists. This was a design choice they made. I will accept it and play despite it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. To claim that load screen are better than a "seamless" world is just plain stupid.
Tunnel zoneing is dated technology because it forces the developers to degrade the game down substantially. Even straight down to core mechanics such as combat. You're gaining more then just improve graphics. Yes zoneing is some what annoying, but the trade off is a beautiful world to explore and for more innovative game mechanics. You people seam to have made up your minds on the game. If you can't accept it. Then LEAVE and do us all a favor already by shutting up.
Yeah ... No, sorry. Loading screens = old tech/method that you do when you can't code it better. (Be it the graphic engine your using or poor coding itself).

Yeah ... i played on like 3 servers before any merdges i remeber 100-600 people seiges (a few were more than this but it hit the servers so bad) , sorry that you played at 5 am eastern.

Now back to the root thread. What type of rig do you have Adelbert? Want to see if I'll be dropping my jaw as well.
Well dunno albout Adelbert but I am running this game with an 8800GT card and 4 gigs of ram and it runs smooth as silk on full settings even in Tortage. Of course I spent most of yestereday just creating different toons and getting a feel for the different classes and haven't reached level 20 yet. I cant wait to see whats on the other side!
IMO, the graphics are simply amazing for an mmo. I think it looks just as good if not better than Oblivion on full settings. I don't think anyone will be dissapointed. Definitely whips any current mmo out by a long shot.
The sieges are capped at 48 vs 48, they can only happen during a certain time window and the 48 players who start on your side get flagged and nobody new can join in the siege. I guess I am kinda looking for DAOC updated as well and that is what WAR is which is most likely my next long term game. That is 6 months away though and a lot can happen in 6 months. Maybe when I reach max lvl in AOC I'll completely be in love with it and won't be interested in anything else, hard to say. If Mythic taught me one thing it is they stink at PvE content and that part is important too so who knows.
Exactly.. so enjoy the time you got in AoC, because you never know what could happen. 6 months is a lot of development and play time. So a lot of changes could happen.
I don't have much faith in Warhammer with EA at the helm. I stick to my choices and not purchasing an EA product ever again is one I firmly believe in.
In it and can say it s great. Better, polished game then alot of released games right now. No faith in EA is your choice, but it really is good.
As somebody who played and did enjoy EQ2 I highly doubt I'll find the zoning in AOC something that'll break my immersion. With two 10k RPM Rapture HDD's in a Raid 0 I won't be looking at loading screens for very long. I think the Pro's far out weight the cons having zoning over seamless, especially with AOC as it enables them to up the detail in zones far beyond what we've seen in MMO's before. Take one of the best Pc games to hit the Pc in the last 12 months. The Witcher. It has a lot of zoning, yet the game is one of the best RPG's ever made.
Well, Zooning is bad. So is unfortunatly the Wow solution too, sacrifices too much for what you get.
The first main programmer of Wow (Jeff strain, he left Blizzard way before release) is working on a totaly new way around all this, he was the guy who lay up the stuff for Wow originaly so he should know. As far as I understand the computer is getting info of the closest thing around you all the time so you just get a little bit data at each time while everything still is in a enormous zone. It will be included in Guildwars 2 anyways. Strain programmed Warcraft 3 and worked in the team that made the first Diablo game too, his latest game were Guildwars.
But enough Off topic.
Anyone know if it's true that you can skip Tortage after your first char BTW? Read it here somewhere before launch but there was a lot of rumour going on.

As for zoning, it doesn't bother me at all. The scenery is vastly better looking than WoW and the content is more to my taste as well.

P.s Your list of mmorpgs you've played doesn't make you more credible.
I don't know the instancing doesn't bother me as of right now I mean you guys do make it sound like its every 2 seconds your in a new instance. Its necassary for this game to have its easy to say "well they should have developed a way around it!" I mean they could have but then you'd need a 2500 dollar computer atleast to play the game on the lowest settings. Wow didn't do nothing special and the only reason it is so popular is because the graphics are simple the gameplay is simple, and the overall design is simple. They did nothing new, special, or even great they just made an easy, affordable, decently stable built game that the masses could get used to. Wow graphics would now work for this game this games isn't meant to have pink armor and cartoon toons running around. Its suppose to be darker harder and bloodier. Anyone can play Wow and get through it all Wow is , is a time sink While in AOC you have to actually fight for your keeps to defend them. You can lose something in this game that you might never get back, it offers a great challenge which wow does not and thats why its so popular.
As for people being angry about the 48v48 yeah I'm a little disappointed too but hell for something that isn't in games often enough 48v48 castle sieges sounds great to me. In a way it is better because you can focus on taking down the castle and not having one guild zerg the other so its a little more fair but you do lose some stuff too such as ally guilds coming to your rescue, alliances, things of that nature. BTW I dono much about WAR but my friend was in beta and said there PvP is nothing like DAoC and that its only slightly better then WoW's. Now Before the fanbois attack me thats what I heard, if its true or not I dono I might try the game when it comes out but in my eyes AoC did nothing wrong they designed a game heavy in story(in the beginning atleast) which his beautiful beyond imagination which a much more interactive combat system then any other out there and alot of gore .
This Zoning thing is not a huge issue I mean if you don't like it then well thats you but you can't compare this game to WoW its like apple and oranges. AoC tried to do something new, better looking, and experimented with many things. Wow did nothing of the sorts they made a crash crop and thats it I thought it was obvious AoC was a niche game but some people I guess never really caught on to that.
I was in Closed Beta, In Open Beta and now Im Early access. Guys I want to tell u that the game improved great...
Just a comparision...in OB sometimes I waited for loading screens some minutes....but now..In EA ...a loading screens takes max 30 sec to load an area where I wasnt before....
Then ...it loads in a few second when I come back... Instances are many in the beggining...to avoid crowding..in newbie are...Anyways...the game in level range 1-20 is more single player than multi...Its most a tutorial...a story..a great story...
After lvl 20 ...instances are verry rare ...Some dungeons needs instancing to have many ppl access to them...Remember rift system of Linerage2 ?
So After lvl 20..the world is opened something like 90%...with some zoning and instancing in some verry few areas...
The ppl are against this system...pls...ask for a buddy key when the game launch..ant after u will play the game over lvl 20 ..u could post things about game...
There is a unwrited law...:dont talk about something u dont know...!
When someone posts this on a forum about a video game, you can be 90% sure his posts are full of it and totally uninteresting, and that the guy is a kid with a huge inflated ego. This was once again confirmed in this thread.
Respect, walk, what did you say? Respect, walk Are you talkin' to me? Are you talkin' to me? - PANTERA at HELLFEST 2023
I'm sorry, but mmos eventually have to jump into higher graphics, just because it's a mmo, doesn't mean i have to deal with 7 year old graphics.
I agree and WoW is just tired and old. AoC is great so far. Zoning is not a problem and I don't feel like I'm playing a cartoon or some old movie. I feel like I'm playing a fantasy game with grit and fast action battle that cannot be run by macro users and buff bots.
To all you WoW fanbois - why are you on the forum bashing conan? Shouldn't you be farming gold or running around your "seamless world" or asking your parents to buy you another subscription card so you can play cartoons for another month?
AoC blows WoW away and the graphics are great and refreshing to see in an MMO. Really, the zoning isn't bad at all. Besides if all you do is run around from zone to zone doing 1 quest at a time you are doing something wrong. Collect your quests and do them in batches. After you leave tortage in AoC the environment is in great form. Just great!
If you really like WoW still, by all means stay the hell out of conan. We don't need people in the game who want to sit back click 2 or 3 buttons and watch the battle. We want warriors who actually play. I never like watching, I like being involved in the games I play. WoW was just click and wait. Battle never changed. AoC has a great dynamic battle system and much better toon development. Not to mention better graphics, mechanics, and storyline. Why in the hell would you want to do away with instances? They add server stability in any game. Why would you want camped dungeons and overpoped zones? Why would you rather play a cartoon than a gritty fantasy game? I just don't get it. Do you just hate change and improvement?
You fight and control your avatar in a swift tense battle. Swift and tense battles is what Wow/TBC makes it really shine in MMORPG's these days. This coupled with incredible detailed data they get from the arena data stats makes it state of the art in microscopic fighting in MMORPG's.
In WoW battles are far from swift and tense. More like boring and predictable.
I would choose immersion over graphics anytime ... isn't that what RPG is about ?
For example early SWG ... huge open planets .... sucky graphics .... but great immersion (except for the damn buildings popping up ontop of you).
I tried open beta for conan .... i liked it, except there was NO immersion. Mainly caused by the 5 to 10 minutes loading screens 3 times an hour ( one of the lucky ones with a decent computer, but crappy performance).

About a million internet movies prove you wrong.
Ever entered an arena battle and wondered why people throw computers and mouses at their feet.
Just try it.
I've played much WoW and the people who take those videos are simple, fetal alcohol simple as well as the people who loose those fights. Boring and predictable show me a build and I can beat it. Fanboi's... so annoying.

Because Age of Conan is simply NOT the way MMORPG's can develop.
Despite its higher detailed graphics it is a way BACK to earlier MMORPG designs of "closed" "preloaded" graphics with hampered gameplay as a result.
As of Conan blowing Wow out of the water is MUST laugh. LOL LOL LOL
Name me ONE aspect of the game Conan is a further evolution in MMORP's BTW.
- Talking NPC's? skipped on second meeting and what'sa patatoe doing in an ON line game for minutes long monologues? I thought linear adventuring ended in the 90's.
- Graphics that hamper gameplay (from terrible long loading screens to PvP animation, "death on loading" designs and the end of seamless worlds as we know them).
- Parallel instanceswhere you can't meet because you're manipulated into another dimension, just by enterin a city.
Preloaded boxes is a failure in MMORPG, that's why.
so wrong, I pity you. You are just impatient and would rather play simple click and wait games than dynamic battles. Cartoon games suck. I would rather have the grit any day. WoW's battle system is pathetic and causes predictability in battle.

Complainers always have to complain about something. If AoC's graphics were crap, they'd be complainign about it. *rolls his eyes*
Been playing all day in the Wild Lands of Zelata. Saw a loading screen hmm, maybe 3 times today after 8 hours of play.
Sorry for my english...
When someone posts this on a forum about a video game, you can be 90% sure his posts are full of it and totally uninteresting, and that the guy is a kid with a huge inflated ego. This was once again confirmed in this thread.
Respect, walk
Are you talkin' to me? Are you talkin' to me?
- PANTERA at HELLFEST 2023
I'll take the load times for the instant travel boats/caravans over long ass flight paths any day.
I feel like I'm playing a fantasy game with grit and fast action battle that cannot be run by macro users and buff bots.To all you WoW fanbois - why are you on the forum bashing conan?
Just try it... I dare ya... Go ahaed...

About a million internet movies prove you wrong.Ever entered an arena battle and wondered why people throw computers and mouses at their feet.
Just try it.
I've played much WoW and the people who take those videos are simple, fetal alcohol simple as well as the people who loose those fights. Boring and predictable show me a build and I can beat it. Fanboi's... so annoying.
Just try it... I dare ya... Go ahaed...
