This forum would make for a great study. As long as people get the carrot, that's all that matters to them. I know it was suppossed to be an orange carrot, but blue is ok,. I know it was suppossed to be cooked, but as long as I get to taste it right now, I'll eat it uncooked. I dont care that you told me it was orange and cooked, just as long as I can get it now.
I think you will find it's more a case of;
I didn't give much thought to DX10, I already have Vista and an 8800gts. I did not upgrade my machine or buy AoC for those specific features. Said features will be implemented in the near future which is fine by me, I have played many MMO over the years and understand the difficulties in implementing them and delivering everything that you would like to see in on release day.
I guess there are many people that share that sentiment. Those who didn't get into Early Access, or didn't get chosen for beta, have old PC's or severe technical issues are happy to exploit every possible press release, comment or remark from developers to substantiate their cries of being hoodwinked.
Bigwhatshisface was one of the above people, he didn't get EA, I think, and seems bitter about that fact. Other people will take the facts and decide for themselves, sure I do not pretend that some things have been changed from the original intentions but so far non have effected me personally.
We all knew the game would be launching without spellweaving (and it still is cause of borken animation)
And we all knew it would be launched without siege battle content.
This has been stated million times now. Still the fanboys are so blind that they think "God" (Funcom) can tell no lies.
I have for the past month told ppl about this on this website. If they were bying AOC it would not ship with things that were said to be in the game. That doesn't mean the game is crap. It just means that Funcom wasn't totally honest about things. THey could have reported 2 months ago that DX10 would not launch with the game - considering that there are still at least 4 months left of work to get it into the game.
But did Funcom say that ? Nope.
Now the question only is - how much more of the things that were said to be ingame are not working or not yet implemented. Raid content ? Is it there - is it tested and is it balanced ?

Do you guys remember open beta? This was what? 2 weeks ago? Funcom confirmed dx10 would be in at launch. It wasn't even in closed beta. They said they wanted to keep "surprises" for launch. So people went out and purchased dx10 cards (and vista and a new rig?). This, just after the early access fiasco are some very shady marketing tactics. I thought Funcom was better than the lousy VG Sigil team, I was wrong. Just shows how to make big bucks hyping a game. Well, at least the game is good. The question is, what else have they been hiding from us?
edit: here is an interesting today press release. The 111'000 collector edition boxes are sold out, 700'000 boxes are shipped to retailers for launch:
Why the referance to sigil , they never lied to anyone they had a open beta and told everyone , Sorry we ran out of money and this is the game we are releasing. Myself i respect them for doing that . Been playing vanguard sence day1 and will be for a long time to come .
Now funcom on the other hand isnt really lying am sure they tried as hard as they could to have DX 10 in at launch , they couldnt do it for whatever reason , no big deal really

As convict said above, you are a fanboi and every carrot is good enough for you.
FYI if you look at my posting history you will see that I have posed many good things and have informed many people about AoC and its features. If I recall I have even helped you with your gfx card drivers problems a couple days ago.
But as opposed to the fanbois, I know how to make the difference between good things and lies. And I say it as it is. Funcom have made a great game, but they have also twisted the reality with spin and wrong information to hype the game and make people purchase.
FYI after the wednesday debacle I got a new special early access key from amazon.co.uk on Saturday morning and got EA (yes 17th morning hours before the servers opened). The same happened to the amazon.co.uk customers and several other shops like 12gamers.com, etc... Funcom were wrong and they had to fix this. This just shows how much bullsh** the fanbois were spreading about this EA issue.
advertising on their site, and still there, that the game supports dx10 and doesnt....thats quite important isnt it? Well, not to me personally, but its an untruth.
And said people will still have DX10 cards and Vista in Q3, so this is no major issue. Said people will also enjoy the upgrade overall, despite lack of DX10 support from AoC...........RIGHT NOW........
Actually, many said people who did not need to upgrade are screwed. Nvidia is releasing the next generation of gfx card within the next 2 months. This also means huge price drops for the current cards.
What Funcom said made many people purchase systems (gfx cards, vista, complete rigs) they can't use / don't need today. When they will finally use them they will have lost several hundreds bucks, or find themselves with an obsolete system compared to what will be available for the same price.
I would have to agree with this reasoning unfortunately. I love the game so far, but Funcom has been displaying some unsettling business tactics of late. The early access issues and the missing information early on about pre-order rewards... and now this.
I was one of those people who scrambled to get my hardware up to par to rock this game... now it seems I could have saved a lot of money since the DX10 feature will not be supported for months... I also pre-ordered way early on Amazon when Funcom was stating early on that SOME pre-orders would get the Mammoth rewards... only, as far as I could tell, they declined to mention which. Doesn't matter at this point I suppose... but it does make me wonder what else they have purposefully chosen not to mention.
Actually, it is a big deal. Its another Funcom lie and apologists like many of the people on these boards make it possible for companies to perpetrate these crimes against consumers by constantly trying to make out that no matter what underhanded crap Company X comes out with, it's all good! Simply stated, it isn't.
I distinctly remember (and I will go dig it up later) snidey claims from the devs about being the only MMO to institute DX10 at launch (an afront to Lotro, and not the first stab these hacks have taken at other franchises). Yet again, they dont deliver despite saying it was going to be in at launch up until about 5 days ago. They obviously knew it wasnt going to be in, so that would be a complete falsehood otherwise known as a LIE.
I wont even bother going into the EA fiasco as it has been done to death but that was another LIE. Its not a conspiracy, it's quite obvious that Funcom/Eidos have LIED in order to take more money. A lot of companies do this and most of the time to their eventual detrement. These things won't kill the game, too many people are too complacent and more than willing to shovel the crap funcom is serving up into their greedy mouths as fast as they can. Until this attitude changes, Funcom's shifty tactics won't.
SOE lied to and swindled their customers and they paid a heavy price for it. Too many more of these shenanigans from Funcom and they may find themselves travelling the same road.

Expect to see a big increase number at launch. I expect around 500-700k at launch. After first 30 days it begins to decrease and stays at a steady 300-500 k. Just a prediction but that's likely gonna happen. Lotro sold around 500K + boxes and now is atm. around 230 k subscribers which is pretty nice for turbine.
That's not always true... and also, your LoTRO facts are far from facts. It's not even in the top 10, and #10 sold 270k.
I wonder is there more than meets the eye. There is a big role from Nvidia and Microsoft in the background. They both have high hopes for the title. The game might not be playing very well in DX10 mode for Nvidia and they need more time for drivers. Same for Microsoft they probably want a title that will truly show show DX10 capabilities or even DX10.1 which would go back to Nvidia to wait for the next gen Cards GTX260/280.
All I am saying is that Funcom might not be the only one to blame and there will be far less complaining to have a functional game which everyone can enjoy rather than a bug DX10.1 version which would only bring bad review and kill some sales. In the end like all mmo 6 months later everything will run smooth (or better) and if the game is good they will forget about the rocky launch or if the game suck they will remeber all the bad. ( WoW is a great example since no one remembers the rocky launch an ridiculous lag. And please don't defend WoW I played and was there since launch. )
Be patient with the game and see what happens... some of you should have done that with the hardware too.
If you try to put the bad away and keep only the good, I prefer to have a beautifully game that really uses dx10 (as opposed to only dx10 shadow and water), this means shader model 4, even if it comes 4-5 months later.
This game is going to be awesome (and already is). Now if only Funcom stopped screwing with us...
Several observations about some questionable Funcom decisions/tactics.
1. The “OB is an old client” issue:
Funcom allowed an official forum moderator to spread false rumors in order to calm the beta testers who are experiencing issues down, and later hung him out to dry while avoiding any accountability. Using a scapegoat is actually nothing new, and the old client issue easily got swept under the rug after they had things reasonably under control a week after open beta. Of course this could just be a simple unfortunate miscommunication, but Funcom’s forum moderator policy is another issue in itself.
2. Refusing to lift NDA with launch imminent:
The open beta received mixed reviews mostly due to the unpredicted performance issues in open beta. The easiest and most logical thing to do was to completely lift all NDA in order to silence the naysayers and doubters. However, Funcom defies logic and keeps the NDA in place in the name of “preserving the integrity of 20+ content”. To anyone with a shred of common sense, this is simply either poor judgement or maybe the fact that revealing 20+ content might not have helped at all, if not make things worse.
3. The early access fiasco:
Yes, I read the ads and Funcom did mention “while supplies last”. However, Funcom wanted people to believe that they had no idea the early access spots ran out so quickly. Assuming the spots went out to customers who read the fine prints carefully and registered early on a first-come first-served basis, it is absurd to suggest that they had no clue when the supplies ran out. Are they suggesting that they didn’t decide how many spots would be available until the very end? Mentioning “while supplies last” isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card. Neglecting to demand the retailers to *explicitly* inform the customers who wish to pre-order that all the early access spots are gone when it did is irresponsible marketing at best.
4. The dx10 issue:
This isn’t about the issue of a missing major hyped feature of the game. This is about Funcom’s decision to leave both dx9 and dx10 options selectable even though dx10 is confirmed to be not enabled yet at launch. Now, can you think of a reason to NOT disable the dx10 option if it isn’t doing anything? Simple really, people who don’t know any better would select it believing that dx10 is actually in the game. Doctors sometimes do this, look up “placebo effect” if you have no idea what I’m talking about. Of course they have now made a public announce about this, the official launch is a day away after all. However, you’d be surprised how many players don’t actually follow closely with gaming news and happily play the game with the illusion that dx10 is in the game. Bottom line is, if the dx10 option doesn’t do anything, be honest and disable the selection instead of trying to be slick.
These are simply some observations from an unbiased point of view. Feel free to correct me or justify some of the aforementioned Funcom’s actions. Of course the game could still be great, but smart consumers take the integrity of a company into account when deciding whether to purchase their products, especially when it comes to MMO subscriptions.
No, I don’t play WoW, so don’t bother wasting your time telling me to go back to it.
Seeing as DX10 has been delayed do you think it's worth installing the old XP pro? Much less of a system hog, i may get better performance on XP as i have 2 gig of ram. What do you think?

Upgrading your ram to 4 gigs would make much more sense then downgrading to XP.

Yeah I know, rams cheap at the moment but I'm on a budget at the mo so installing XP may get me a performance boost till i can get some good Corsair or Kingstone ram.

I'm not sure why you would think so...
The main benefit to the game from running Vista is the DX10. As that isn't in yet...XP would easily offer him better performance without spending a dime. Its not like it would change how pretty his game is in any way.

I'm running a core 2 duo and an 8800 gts, its just the ram letting me down. I dont mind XP it's a decent OS as windows goes, its worth a shot anyway.
Interesting discussion but somewhat pointless. The game will be judged according to the features it will have at the time it was purchased and played. Features cut and features promised for the future are irrelevant. If the game is not fun at the X point in time, with the content available at that particular time, the people that fund MMOs (casuals) will not stick around.
All this discussion about what was promised and what is missing or will be missing is purely academic. The past has shown that as long as the core game presented is fun, the casual crowd will stick around making it a success. The list of features promised is of little importance. The list of features available is all that matters.
So the real question is, is the game released in a few days fun?
Boo at Funcom. This is starting to be like those "great deals" you can get at a store. They build you up on this great price with all these nice sales, and then at the checkout it's oh yeah that will $300 extra today and in 3-6 months you will get a mail in rebate.
And why does everyone keep saying the graphics are amazing in this game? Lotro's graphics trump this games easily. Maybe they have gotten better in the launch client but I'm not impressed one bit.
You know what's funny, look back at some posts on the day the EA started. A lot of people made posts about how "DirectX 10 looks so much better than 9" and yet, it wasn't even working yet haha.
And i saw some comparison shots of Direct x 10 for this game and they made it look like spotlighting and other lighting effects are only available when you have direct x 10, which is totally ludicrous. It's almost like they left out features that should have been in DX 9 just so that only people with DX10 could use them, wihch IMO is lame.

We call this "bait and switch", which seems to be FunCom's preferred type of business method.
I wonder if Funcom will make us buy a DX10 version or if it will simply be a patch ? The way theyre going to promote it, almost sounds like its another box to purchase

I wonder if Funcom will make us buy a DX10 version or if it will simply be a patch ? The way theyre going to promote it, almost sounds like its another box to purchase
