Age of Conan: Collector's Edition Sells Out

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Funcom has announced that the Collector’s Edition of Age of Conan has completely sold out in all regions where the game is sold.

Funcom is proud to announce that the Collector’s Edition of Age of Conan is now completely sold out in all markets. The exclusive edition was announced in January, and has since topped retail charts at numerous retailers. In some markets, the Collector’s Edition has been sold out for weeks, and as a result additional boxes were made. These are also sold out, and the total print run stands at 111.000 units. Lucky customers may still find some copies on retail shelves, but no re-orders are available.

Additional retail figures for the standard edition of Age of Conan are also highly impressive. In total, Funcom is shipping around 700.000 copies of Age of Conan on day one. This impressive figure for a PC game is powered by equally impressive pre-order numbers. As a result of the tremendous interest and recent order increase, Funcom has not been able to fulfill all orders of Age of Conan in several markets due to current server capacity limitations. Extra orders of servers are now in place to facilitate for handling of more customers.

Yeah, sounds alot like the WoW release where the interest in the game was alot more then they predicted, and as a result no one could find a copy of WoW anywhere for a couple months after release b/c Blizzard stopped producing them so they could catch up with demand.

I remember that people, of course, were not very happy w/ Blizzard, and I'm sure people won't be happy w/ Funcom. But, such things are, sadly, a necessity . Not much can be done about a situation like this, except what they are doing. ordering more servers, beefing up the infrastructure, and not releasing more copies until they can handle it.

Really, they are doing the right thing, but that won't do much to placate the people that ended up on the outside looking in.

I honestly didn't expect them to have sales anything like that at first.  I know they had said one reason they limited "head start" was they didn't have the servers to do it.

The one option was to take the closed beta servers and set those up.. but they had converted them to a "live test" bed a while ago.. obviously needed for testing.

Not much to say really.. but the 700,000 shipped and "couldn't meet all existing orders" (server limitations etc) was pretty suprising.. to me at least.

See how it goes over the next few months.

Now watch for the ebay auctions once this news becomes widespread. You'll see all the secret stashes of CEs appear ;)

The OP said collector's editions though. Nothing about the standard editions?

Now my marketing foo is rusty, but if I read the release correctly they are talking about Sell-In not Sell-Through. Since they talk about Funcom shipping that many boxes, which must mean to retailers and they're still talking about CE copies being available at retailers then they must be talking about Sell-In. This would be supported by the fact that you can still order the CE online from multiple outlets. In that case you would  hope that they're actually selling all the copies they made into the channel. Still you can't Sell Through more copies than you Sell-In so it is encouraging that they're shipping out a healthy number of boxes.

one thing though alot of the CE that are stil being sold are actually resales at jacked up prices.  Take for example on amazon.. they are listing a 3rd party who has jacked the prices up to $130+ last time i looked.  Gamestop is no longer even listing the CE.  BB no longer is taking online orders and is just selling them instore.

Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads! Swords for everyone!

Its nice to have been one of the smart ones and preordered when they first could be. Early play is a treat.

I pre-ordered the CE way back and it wasalready then really hard to find a swedish site that had any left. Not that i got in the early access anyway, wasn't fast enpugh....

Funcom is only to congratulate on the, at least initial, success. I just hope the servers won't be so overcrowded they crash at once. What bothers me a bit tough is that there won't be any Direct X 10 version available at launch. I upgraded to Windows Vista just to play AoC with DX10 graphics

You can go to almost any online store and get the CE now, its not sold out.    Go to Amazon and you can get it with free shipping, no tax.  (unless you live in the states that amazon will tax you in)

My guess is that it was a marketing ploy by Funcom, or just plain shoddy distribution.

actually , since the had none for sale over a week ago I would guess more are being manufactured for sale. Or people cancelled their orders with amazon.com  when they annouced they were not shipping them out  in a timely manner.  you wil also see they have all of 1 that they are selling and 1 from a third party at the suggested retail price.  The rest they are just the middle man for the sale and the price starts at 134.00 and goes higher
