Can I play the game for $500?

I've been following this game for at least a year, and it's finally almost out! Unfortunately I bought a Dell 3 years back, and I am unable to upgrade to AGP or PCIe video. I need a completely new computer.

I don't really want to spend the time building a comp, so I was looking to buy one premade. This one here seems to be the most promising for the money. What do you think? The Requirements don't say much about AMD.

Yeah, you should be able to play at medium settings with that rig.

  • cheggelundcheggelund Member UncommonPosts: 91

Yes, medium settings with no problems. the 8500GT is great bang for the buck.

I am playing at low settings right now, and the game still looks great IMHO.

you can build a pretty decent PC for about 500-600.  you wont get anything worth a damn through a retail builder for that

OP, if you're asking for advice on a rig you should at least give the specs on your current one.  If you're unsure then you should post the make and model of the PC.

I'm going out on a limb here and even though I'm going to post a link to a video card for PCI it's something I would not recomend, nor am I recomending it now.

    HIS Hightech H155F256EDDPLN-R Radeon X1550 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI

    $95 USD

Personally, I wouldn' t even attempt to purchase the card as an upgrade for a PCI system.  Have I made it clear I'm not suggesting it?  :)

But, if the OP feels it's an absolute must to increase their gaming performance I suspect this card should help them *IF*, and only *IF*, their only option was a PCI slot upgrade.  AGP would give better options.  :)

The card linked has only 4 pipes, 4!  AGP cards have up to 12 (16 on a very rare occasion; selective ati x800's or x850's?)  PCIe is the way to go if you're going to build a system you can grow into over the next 3-4 years.

never buy computers from ebay they are usually a rip.

You should build a pc its easy and you have full control on what you get and upgrade too.

This is what i would get over a premade pc.. being as cheap as possible but still being a nice rig.

    Motherboard

    CPU

    Memory

    Harddrive

And thats a pretty good priced system. I think thats around $450 or so. and it would beat the shit out of the one you linked. Course you still have to get a computer case but you can figure that out. You might find a better deal if you can get a cpu+motherboard combo deal like at frys electronics or something.

I should add while the cpu is expensive i picked it cause it can overclock to 3ghz with ease. and the motherboard should let you overclock. of course amd is very cheap so you can change that out if you want and save even more

Just mix and match i am sure you find a grea deal. I think the video card is the best deal of all my links tho. i mean $99 and your getting an 8800GTS thats fricken hot!.

I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I upgraded the video card already for about $50, I think it's a Radeon 9250 PCI now. There are definitely no AGP or PCIe slots. I have a total of 512mb ram, with no slots available. The processor is decent for being single core (3ghz P4).

I took the advice one person gave about looking at dirt cheap parts on Newegg

    Mobo: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

    Processor: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

    PSU: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

Plus a cooler master case, GeForce 8600, and 2gb memory for $330 including shipping. I realize it's a bad computer, but I plan on selling it in a year before college anyway. I just need one for this game, I have a 360 for other games. Is this enough to play the game on medium-ish settings? Am I just wasting money?

Newegg is a good site and a lot of people on these forums swear by them, however I use another company quite a bit more it seems as they always seem to be 10 bucks or more cheaper then even newegg and free shipping.

I always compare newegg and ZipZoomFly.com and for the last 5 builds I have used ZipZoomFly.com more often.

I don't know if I like ZZF, I like the easily accessible reviews on NewEgg.

I changed the setup to an intel mobo and processor, and it comes out to about $390.

    i bought a dell inspiron 530

    Quad 6600

    1gb ddr2

    250gb

    24inch widescreen lcd

    Vista Premium

I paid like $690.. then bought 2 GB corsair $30 after rebate, 8600GT $50 after rebate..

Total.. ==== $770 that is not bad..

I thinking to upgrade to 8800GT.. (at first i plan to just play CS:S. i didnt realize this game until last 2 week) .

Of course those deal have been over since last month.. i will post it if dell have such deal.

Well if you get intel make sure its an intel core the celerons suck.. if its too much the amd is good and they can overclock as well.

I still cannot stress the a better video card like the one i recommend. I know thats a funny website and brand name card but $99 is an amazing price.. here is the exact same card on newegg.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814500008

As you can see its way too much money on newegg its almost double the price. But that other site is much cheaper and already a few people order from the place and got the card.

    http://fxvideocards.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-8800-GTS-320MB-ZT-88SE320-FSP-GDDR3-PCI-Express-x16-SLI-ZOTAC-Video-Card-p-16285.html

I am sure you want to know if the card is actually a good card. Here is a review that i think puts it into perspective.

    http://xtreview.com/review202.htm

As you can see they compare 8800gts 320 to the 8600 it and doubles the framerate like 50 on 8800gts to 25fps on the 8600gts. not to mention they even ran 8600gts in SLI? and the single 8800gts was still faster.

So compare price and performance and this is best bang for buck no doubt!

One more thing if you want to know where i found this deal i read the anandtech hot deals for a lot.. here is the post with the link to that really good deal.. about 20 or so replies with a few poeople saying they ordered it already.

Cyberpowerpc.com is also a great website for getting gaming PCs.

They have weekly specials every week on computers. You can get some great deals there.
