My system meets or exceeds most of the recommended specs:
Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2..66 GHz
2 gigs RAM
It's on it's own 7200 RPM hard drive
n7950GT 512 meg
Win XP and DX9
And yet, I can't play at 1600x1200 without severe performance slowdown. If I play windowed at 1280x1024 on low it's pretty smooth ... but it doesn't look very good at all Bump up the settings and it turns into a slide show in combat (which sucks because the combat animations are awesome!).
Anyone have any suggestions to improve performance?
I just ran a spy removal. I also defragged my windows drive and the hard drive it's on.
Thanks!

low resolution, turn on anti-aliasing. going max resolution without 8800+ in SLI is a bad idea.
FFXI does not need SLI, infact i heard its not even compatible with it. FFXI on the PC is actually an import from Playstation 2. What u are really playing on the pc, is an emulator to run a PS2 game on the pc. Which is why you can not get more than 30FPS with even the top notch pc. They purposely fixed it to run at the same refresh rate as the PS2 , because of the game's mechanics. There are forums all over that discuss that topic more in detail. But basically, the game's performance on the pc, is heavily on the cpu, and the video card, from what i've read is kinda secoundary. From my experience, i ran ffxi when it first came out on an old Ati 9700 Pro 128mb card at 1280x1024 8X AF and 4x AA, and it ran very smooth 15-30fps, and looked very smooth and nice. Ive also seen it run on the Nvidia 7800 GT 256mb at same graphic settings with the same outcome, but stayed above 25fps most of the time. And in high conjested areas like Jueno, 1gig of ran handle it just fine. My friend has it on the XBOX 360 , and to be honest, with HDMI thas the very best u can get FFXI. Its Very nice looking and never lags on FPS.
the cheap fix and this applies to any game - turn off shadows and any anti aliasing
the money fix - go to Newegg or the vendor of choice and get a Nvidia GTX 260 or ATI 4870. Both have about comparable performance and are around $275 USD
I miss DAoC
Turn it down to Shader Model 2. Granted it looks worse but AoC's performance is crappy with SM3. I flagged up the issue back when I played and the thread grew to be a huge list of people having performance problems with SM3, but no doubt nothing has been done about it.
My machine isn't great, but I play on medium specs with 'Shader 2' & 'Personal Shadows' & it seems OK.
I have "'XP, 3.5Ghz single hyperthreaded CPU, 3Gb Ram, Nvidia 8800GTS 640MB, Soundblaster Xfi"
As I said, my specs are not great but whilst my FPS is generally in the low 20s & dips to the mid teens in combat, it isn't a slideshow either. Extra memory always helps, are you sure that you have set the advanced setting slider bar to use the maximum allowed cache as it defaults to zero for me?
If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?
