the real issue at hand here is TIMING. Almost every MMO I've played does their updates during the wee hours of the morning. WTF is this middle of the day shit?
It's not hard. They based everything they do off GMT. They've already said they do. Thus mid day for some. Early day for some. Late day for some. Early morning for some. Late night for some.
It's fair in all respects as far as I'm concerned. You can't please everyone. So don't try to.
Companies that base all actions purely on lets say EST. Screws EVERY other time zone. So is that fair? Nope. No method is fair. So they chose GMT, which would reflect on everyone as equally as possible.
Besides this time of day folks are still working and kids are just getting out of school. Most MMOs focus on morning time zones due to their target audience being children. It wouldn't help them if their target audience was stuck waiting for 2hrs or more after school correct?
Most working people get off around 4-6pm. Thus the times seam justified.

Anyway, most people arn't complaining about downtime. If you read any of the posts. I am still trying to get an answer to the question I asked, maybe you could read the actually thread.
It's possible I wasn't even included you in what I had to say. My post was a generalization to the people who fit my post. You on the other hand do not.
If you feel as if I'm targeting you or "out to get you" then perhaps you are a part of the post and should, as well, grow up.
It's wonderful that you make assumptions of my life and that it bears any meaning on my experiences or my understanding of life. i'm 20 years old and live in my parents basement paying rent. Does this mean I live with mommy and daddy? I suppose. I pay rent as if I lived on my own, but at a fair price and have triple the space of said apartment. Sad? Maybe. Smart? Definitely.
It's ok if you have lost time with your family. It's tragic and sad, but I however am enjoying my time with my family. Thank you though for your observation.
BTW, Please don't forget to remove those phone taps and watch out for the man in a black suit around every corner. That paranoia will get you.

This is the US servers we're talking about here. They need to do updates to the US servers when US players are sleeping...like most other companies. even SOE understands this basic concept.
I've played the game perfectly fine since launch. No real lag, no stuttering, no problems.
But that isn't true for everyone. My friend, who has almost the exact same comp and set up as me, can't even patch because he gets the assertion failed error. And so have a LOT of people. Go check out the official forums. Not a single response from Funcom about their problem either. Hoping the current down time will fix some of this because he is very understandably frustrated that he cannot even patch the game he has been so eager to play....
....while I happily skip through Tortage murdering savages.
Tell him to disable is Anti-Virus, it should work ....

What do you most games have different clients for Europe and US so basing it on EST is only for US servers and patches are implemented in the morning to noon EST in other MMOs i played.

I understand were you're comeing from. I also don't agree with their time zone structure, but this is a choice they've made for whatever reason they can fabricate. As said though. At these times the adults are still working. Where is in the morning they have a bit of spare time then later in the day they have spare time.
We must remember the target audience folks.

While this IS true depending on the target audience as I've underlined in my previous post. Those games are designed with teenager mentality. Thus patching during after school hours is not wise. The working class isn't generally home at this time. They often have time in the morning and later in the day.
You just need to take a step back and consider their reason for picking such a time frame.
It could have even been a spur of the moment thing. Or perhaps they just want to fix the game for us as soon as possible.

Did you even read what Funcom posted? An URGENT update is not something that can be held off for the convienence of a very small audience. Most Americans are at work until at least 4pm, but generally until 6pm. They wont even notice that there was a downtime, but they will notice a patch.
It's the second day. Stop complaining like a bunch of little kids who didn't get to stay up past 9pm to watch Barney. Grow up... seriously. I'm truly sorry the world does not revolve around you... but that's the cold hard truth.

I am pretty sure its not targeted to the teen demographic. If you ask i think they are just lazy devs, rather than hire a team for US and other region specific servers or Outsource to India they are just doing it themselves from Norway in their local times.

The U.S. servers are based in New Jersey... obviously there ARE people there working. It's not just a building left unattended with a bunch of network servers laying around. This was an "urgent" update... and therefore could not be held off.
At least Funcom is fixing problems quickly, rather than letting them wait and cause you all to be even more angry, albeit about a different thing.
I sure hope they plan to refund some of this time akin to what World of Warcraft did its first few days and weeks.
Props to the team for solving whatever "inconsistencies" they're dealing with, but paid time is paid time. Seems like everyday I've gotten online mid-afternoon to play out my Early Access days, the servers are down and never back up on time.
There's wasted time on guest keys as well if this is going to continue; which was my primary reason for buying the CE. 90 bucks and a additional 5 dollars for Early Access isn't a lot of money, but its sure feeling devalued right now.
WTH is wrong with you people. You're whining about a patch that's designed to fix the very game you play. You lose 4 hours NOW, but saves yourselves from several days of grief later on. This isn't a console system where ALL machines are EXACTLY alike down to every little microchip on the boards that run them to the cables that power them. You're asking for perfection on systems that won't allow perfection. MMOs are in a constant state of development. Regardless of how it's spun. ALL MMOs are ALWAYS still in beta even after release. I just don't understand you peoples mode of thinking. You want a working game, but you won't accept the terms of making it a working game. It's completely absurd. It's ok to fix the game, but not to bring down the servers to implement those fixes. Doesn't that mean the game goes no where? Stop being ignorant immature inbred children and grow the hell up already. Your life shouldn't revolve around the computer. Go outside. Get a puppy and play fetch. Do something with your life besides ranting on a god damn forum, because your game server has to go down for additional time in order to FIX bugs that you DO NOT LIKE. Say hello to the real world children. It doesn't always work out the way you want it to and it's FAR from perfect. Enjoy your stay.
Personally I have dealt with coding my whole life and am currently a tech support specialist for HP, and trust me it doesn NOT take 8 hours to "install the new 50mb updates." Basically Funcom is going about this wrong, why pull down the servers WHILE you are working on the next patch? How about you leave the servers alone, and when the next patch is ready you pull them down for about a hour to put it into effect(technically about 15 minutes, but it does take time with as many servers as they are dealing with and then they must run diagnostics). I can 100% guarantee you that the downtime is because they found a small bug at the last minute and are trying to "perfect" the patch. Hence the one more hour philosophy.
If there are exploits that can have far-reaching consequences if allowed to continue, then yes, they HAVE to take the servers offline while they fix it.
Great, downtime was just extended by another hour. After the 1 1/2 day early access this is getting to be a bit much!
this is literally normal for almost every MMO to have ever come out. You are going to get this. Never call out from work the first week of a MMO; you'll only regret it.
Hey there Enigma
I prefer waiting 3 months to play an MMO after it releases. Way more fun and a lot less headaches all around. You won't get me paying for BETA (anymore, heheh)! See you this winter AoC. Patch it up nice for me.

I'm a web designer and C++/C# programmer. I too have experience. I don't know how much yours is, but you haven't worked on a project like this then you don't have a clue.
I've done MMO design. Not this kind of extend. Nearly every patch implementation causes another issue to appear. It's the nature of the best. You're injecting new code into previous code. If it doesn't play nice. Then you got problems.
Normally the issues was just databases errors, but still took time to fix. I'm sure they're running pretty extensive databases, which take time to run through.
On top of that diagnostics on software this large takes a very very long time. It's not a 5 minute scan and all done. There's a lot of data to weed through. Even then some of the feedback reported by the diagnostics could be false positives. There's no telling what could happen.
When it comes down to it neither me or you know what the heck happened. It's not our place to know what happened. All we need to know is that something happened and they're fixing it.
If they found a list minute bug. So be it. I'd rather no bug then a last minute bug to begin with.
You do NOT however publicize a patch you KNOW contains a bug. This will cause MUCH more customer aggravation then simply extending the downtime. It's best to leave them offline until it is prepared for the public.
As said though. This is an urgent patch. My guess is it is to address some of the HUGE issues in a few of the zones that you literally can not go in or you will never get out nor be able to play in. Those bugs are a priority and the longer they sit. The more customers they lose.
They could possibly be fixing the trader/bank/mail npc as well, which I'd gladly take a even 6hr downtime just to get.
The benefit outweighs the loss in the long run. You can spin it how you want to, but when it comes down to it. You either deal with it or you quit.
Geez, relax... Read a book, go upstairs and give your mom a hug. This is a game that's just been launched...It's been a pretty smooth launch and the game runs great. Be patient.
Yuk just said the OP lives in his/her mother's basement!!
I preordered and haven't had any issues yet. Maybe when I install it this weekend...
