Neep Help - Pc won't turn on.

JupstoJupsto Member UncommonPosts: 2,075

so I walk in my door and find my age of conan has arrived but as I go to turn on my PC, nothing happens. I was playing it last night.

the green light on the motherboard comes on when its plugged in (and stays on for a minute when unplugged). does this mean its not my PSU?

I've scanned the web for some advice. have checked everything is plugged in correct inside the machine. have even taken out and put back in the battery on the motherboard, which i heard resets the bios which might help. no luck.

any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

my spec: 650i p5n-e, 2gb corsair, e6750, antec 900 case, 8800 gts 512mb, "artic 700" 700w psu.

I built the thing around january. haven't attempted any overclocking yet.

How does the button on the power button feel when you press it.  Does it offer resistance.  If not then the problem is the plug on the other side came loose.

Do you have any blown capacitors?  They look like batteries.  You will notice them by leaking goo.

Just because the light on the motherboard is on doesn't mean it isn't the power supply.  It could be the power supply not routing the power correctly or not enough.  Also is the power supply switch flipped right?

Could always be a virus too, if it's not a hardware problem. My old computer had no response from the keyboard for about 2 days, then it wouldn't turn on at all. It's unlikely but it's a possibility.

The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

yeah psu switch is flipped. hmm i suspected that it might still be the psu. its been quite hot weather and its little dusty.

no the button feels normal, clicks when you press it. haven't noticed any of the brown things oozing.

    thanks for help guys.

It could be a variety of things.  But most likely confined to the motherboard and PSU.  If it was anything else then it will still turn on, just not able to get passed bios.  I would get a PSU tester to check the PSU.  A new PSU will cost in the $50-$250 range, while the tester is in the $10 range.  If it isn't the PSU, then either the motherboard became faulty or your processor is fried.

hey I tryed using my old psu 250W. it only has a 20 pin power thing whereas my new motherboard usually uses 24. the 20 pin got the pc running for a sec each time before powering out.

whereas I tired using the 20 pin out of 24 of my new psu in the old motherboard (it only has space for 20), and nothing. not even the light came on.

whats going on>? can I be certain its the new psu which is broken?

    thanks!

I'm confused about the plug, does the psu have 24 or the motherboard?

do u hear anything when u push the power as I usually can tell whats wrong from just listening to a computer, the sounds tell u everything lol.

as it turned on a bit but turned off again on the old psu, that would most likely be caused by not enough power, so I'd say it sounds like the psu has blown. Buy a new one check it out and hopefully that fixes it.

Like I said, get a real PSU tester.  Using a 20 pin PSU on a 24 pin Motherboard usually won't work anyway.  Getting a PSU without knowing if its the PSU or the Motherboard could be costly in the end.

Kind of sounds like a problem I had a while ago. Well two problems. My older computer just turned off one day, and it was do to the PSU. I had an Antec Truepower 500W. I replaced that with an Enermax and everything ran well.

My newest built computer (about 6 months ago or so) kept shutting off at random times. I could not for the life of me figure it out, and I have been working a big companies help desk for about 7 years now. I finally narrowed it down to overheating after extensive testing. Stupid me remembered that when I was putting the heatsink on the processor, the Intel retail fan wouldn't sit properly, it just kept popping up. Finally I got completely right, and voila, working computer again!

So anyway, I would definitely get a PSU tester as Cleffy has suggested. It sounds like the problem, but also as Cleffy said, it could be an array of things unfortunately. Good luck to you!
