Anything like UO but newer?

Is there anything like UO where you pick what skills you want and level those and that determines your class, rather than picking a class and that determining what skills you could get?  Housing part was cool as well but not required. 

I used to love UO, then switched to SWG when it launched and really, it WAS like that, but Im sure everyone knows that story. 

I would go back to UO but even after their little update, it just feels old and tired.  I really wish Ultima X would have been released. 

Any suggestions?

eve online, MAYBE ryzom, but i think ryzom may still be having financial issues.  otherwise, nope, SOE screwed us out of the closest thing to an UO upgrade as we've seen to date.
