I understand that every game has instancing in it (dungeons, certain city areas, etc), but I'm looking for a MMO that has as little of this as possible so you can move from zone to zone without your immersion being ruined by a loading screen. Thanks for any tips and advice in advance

vanguard is a massive open world
edit: just to add this game is massive you get a mount at lvl 10 and you need it ! its one of the biggest games i have seen up to now nothing comes close to this game in map size its crazy
How is the population in Vanguard? I remember playing this one a couple of weeks ago and loving how open it was, but there was no one around anywhere and I wasn't sure if I had chose the wrong server or something.
last time i played they just did a server merge so there were people all over the pve server the pvp i seen one guy and he killed me hah
Alright, cool. Sounds great. :]
Any other games even come close to Vanguard? 'Cause I remember it being quite large. It doesn't have to be that massive, but on a similar design would be perfect.
Other than Vanguard, the only one I can think of is WoW (not sure if you've played it or not). There are loading screens/instances for dungeons and group content as well as battlegrounds.
As far as popular or mainstream goes, I don't think there are any others right now that boast a open instance-free experience.
Vanguard's population (on the PVE servers) is plenty healthy. I play nightly and never have a problem grouping or just chatting it up with people at the level ranges I play (1-25 currently).
The word is called persistant mmorpgs
WoW, SWG, EVE, i think lotro is also but im not sure.

Quick note on this...LOTRO is definitely not! Every single building in the game is instanced, and though the world itself isn't "zoned" by instancing, there are walls to guide you from one zone to the next. Most of the time they're visible (high hedges, steep mountains, etc). All of the storyline/book quests are completely instanced and most of them "quick-travel" you around. (Basically you talk to the NPC when you have a group, he transports you to your own instanced version of the spot, you run through it, and talk to him again when you are finished to be transported back to the original starting place to finish the quest.) It wasn't my cup of tea, which was disappointing as I LOVE Middle-Earth.
WoW, SWG, and EVE are all good suggestions though!
yea i never played lotro, i was just guessing
Yeah, didn't want you to think I was attacking you. Just wanted to clear it up for the OP. It's not a bad game, but I don't think it's what he/she is looking for.
Oh, I apologize for not mentioning the games I have played. I used to play WoW nonstop, but I'm just looking for a healthy alternative at the moment :]
I played EvE and had trouble making it past the steep learning curve, but probably because I'm way too impatient. I wasn't a fan of LotRO either due to the heavy instancing. SWG I played before the NGE but heard more than enough from the community, although I'm not sure what it's really like since I lost the game.
I would love to hear some feedback from EvE players as to whether I should try it again to get past the learning curve. The whole idea of the game has always intrigued me. I just never put enough effort into jumping past that tutorial. It's rough!
SWG feedback would be cool too. I just always heard the community is basically dead so I backed off from the idea of trying it again.
SWG realy depends on the server i know euro-chimaera has a healthly population still,
As for the game If you can get past the fact that it is a shell of its former self then it can be enjoyable.
go go vanguard ill start tonight in the pvp server...lets make vanguard revive..so they can hire more staff to make the game better endgame...
people that left vanguard for aoc will soon return...trading the biggest mmo seemless world for a small instanced loading screen game is not good..
Runescape! Lol, seriously though, it's completely persistent .
does vanguard have a free trial?
RIP SWG
Kaldin Brine - Master Armorsmith
Kaldier Brine - Master Rifleman
Vanguard does not currently have a free trial. A trial island type setup and free trial are in the works, but are not active yet.
The Vanguard forums have been quite active lately and I know quite a new new people are playing, so you might hop over there if you get a chance and see about a buddy key. I handed out 20 of them late last week and am currently out, but you can also purchase the game on Ebay for $7-10 (which includes 10 buddy keys and some other nice stuff).
does vanguard have a free trial?
