Trying to find a suitable caster class. Not a fan of either the Demonologist or Necromancer as I can't stand pet classes (especially since they don't actually provide tankability). So what's the best solo and offensive spell-caster? Trying the Dark Templar, but seems to be less of a hybrid than I thought it would be.

i'm personally enjoying my dark templar - it doesn't seem to be too popular at the moment. It does however have an alright survivability and some nice auras. Alot of the combos provide a nice mix of melee and nice magic beneficial to you. Still - im in early days atm but so far im enjoying it.
Yeah, my DT is alright, just not the playstyle I enjoy. I like to cast from the back to get them over to me and I thought DTs had some offensive magic, but perhaps I was mistaken because at 14, I don't have any.
UPDATE:
So I've gotten a Tempest of Set to level 16 and I'm really enjoying it, I think I'm going to stick with it.
It's weird, usually I go for the basic classes that exist across all MMOs (warriors, hunters, necromancers, etc) because they seem to be the most balanced and well thought-out. But so far I am really liking my Tempest. Seems like a fair balace of destructive magic and healing.
I am a mage-phillic person. I love the magic and loose interest fairly quickly with sword swinging. (Though I have to say, AoC has some really nice moves and great animations for the melee classes)
I have played the Demonologist, ToS and PoM each to at least mid 20's. The PoM surprizingly has the highest survivability for me.... She can wade in to a situation and come out alive where the others would be back at the shiney teleport pad.
She is the only one that seems to have a reserve safety reserve when additional critters become interested in what is going on and join the fight.
The PoM also has a Vuln-type spell that makes the critter more vulnerable to Holy Magic for a little while. I REALLY miss my vuln magics from Asheron's Call. I miss the old style mages with soooo many options for what to do... EQ/WoW killed those mages, stripped them clean of most of their powers and left us with these one-trick pony swindelers in place of mages.
PoM at least hints back to the good ol' days of Vulning your critter before zapping them.
