Need a new MMO

After closing the book on AoC for awhile I decided to pursue something more pre-NGE SWG/EvE like...

I'm looking for a very open sandbox-y world with immersivenes....I loved SWG, and what kept me playing so long after the NGE hit, was it really felt like I was in an alternate world with political drama, social drama, Star Wars-y drama...I never really got into EVE because I couldn't have any intense dogfights or anything like that. but the FEELING was there.   I don't want a rehashed WoW/EQ2 clone, I'm looking for something beyond that, to the extent of Pre-CU/Pre-NGE SWG...I've tried AO but I just can't immerse myself in it.  So, any suggestions?

Well as you may have read in other topics, Vanguard is the closest modern mmorpg to the likes of what you are looking for.  Might be worth a look, some unofficial reviews and opinions (i.e. by new players on blogs etc) are starting to pop up putting it in a very positive light.

    Hellfire,

If you're looking for a traditional type mmo (fantasy based world) then Vanguard might fit the bill.  It's not nearly as sandbox as SWG was, but it gives you a lot of freedom to do what you want.  (quest or don't, crafting and diplomacy are completely different spheres from adventuring), etc.  I know quite a few people who have maxed out as some sort of crafter and haven't gone past level 10-20 adventuring.  Anyway, as tb_bone said, it's about the closest thing to what you are describing and it's a lot of fun (in my opinion).

    Hope that Helps.

Do you find generic skill-grinding fantasy games boring? Do you disdain in-game global auction systems that make it almost impossible to do any kind of trading except via the auction system? Are you annoyed that nothing you do in the game really changes the world because everything resets? Do you wish for a game where there was significant social interaction between players and that had the kind of players you'd want to interact with? Do you wish for a real sandbox game?

Do you wish you somehow had the ability to go into an MMORPG and just change everything to make it into the kind of game you'd want to play? Maybe it is possible.

Imagine a generic fantasy game world struck by a great magical catastrophe that plunges most of the land under the sea, wipes out all the skill grinder players, obliterates the e-bay style auction system that makes the economy boring, and even sweeps away most of the items, magic and even magically erases the annoying crafting system.

Imagine a group of gods entering that world to remake it as the ultimate sandbox game. There is almost nothing left but a few dwarves, gnomes and a monster or two that have survived the floods. Everything else will be recreated by the new gods.

Imagine creating a character in such a world. Imagine your character speaking to the gods and telling them how to remake the world the way you want it. Imagine a team of game developers making the changes you and other players ask for so that a new game and a new world evolves from the work of the gods.

That is the scenario for Magic of the Gods (TM). Believe it or not.

I got it like a week after released and was turned off by it's utter bugginess, I might check it out again.

Also sorry for the generic title....

Former pre-NGE SWG players like(d) to compare Ryzom a lot to it. Since it seems to be reopening anytime soon (within the next 40 or 50 months  *just kidding*) it might be an option to look at it for you. Website's closed/blank atm, though...
