Originally posted by admriker4 To be honest, I hate PvP. I get no pleasure in killing a real player's avatar. In nearly all MMO's Ive played, there was zero point in PvP except for some minor buff, gear that only was useful for more PvP, or ego points. There was one game where I enjoyed PvP and that was Star Wars Galaxies (before the changes). As a jedi, it was thrilling to be constantly looking over my shoulder for a Bounty Hunter. There were no safe zones or any place to hide. There wasnt another instance that I could switch to if I was about to lose (age of conan). I was hunted like an animal and it was awesome. From what Ive read, Warhammer is focusing its content on realm vs realm. Will there be any reason for someone like me to buy this game ? I like PvE sandbox play with the occasional non-forced quest to break up the boredom. I also love crafting and being a dominant force in the economy. Every game Ive played Ive ended up as one of the best-known crafters on that server. If I had my choice, I would strictly be a crafter like my alt was in SWG. Warhammer looks pretty good on the cover but I wonder if it will have anything for me
If the game's PvP or as they say RvR is anything similar to Dark Age of Camelot then I think you might. I honestly wasn't a fan of PvP until I played Dark Age of Camelot and to a lesser degree Anarchy Online. My whole issue with PvP was that I didn't like to be griefed and didn't see the fun on being on the end of that type of gameplay. So I avoided PvP servers. However with DAoC and AO they focused on faction based PvP in specific areas. That gave it structure and with clear purposes. The ability to be apart of a massive group to capture a keep, an outpost, or an area made it worthwhile. Not only being able to help my faction along by gaining bonuses. Having my stats online was enjoyable as well. Even if I wasn't part of the group that landed the killing blow in DAoC I was still given credit as being part of the force that helped capture a keep or tower. The game still recognized I was there and took part. I hope WAR continues that. It gave the game a since of community where you side was broken down into groups and guilds when it came to RvR everyone helped each other for the most part. You needed everyone so most wouldn't be turned away or ignored. Random and FFA PvP to me by comparison is pointless killing.
It was the structure and actual purpose that caused to like PvP in these games. Not being in the beta but from reading all the material I can Warhammer continues that tradition but I don't think you'll need to take part. You can still actually contribute to the RvR struggle without taking part in the RvR combat so there is still room for those that might not want to take part in the pvp gameplay as they play. However you might find that you like if you wonder into the RvR areas with a group or just by yourself as others rush an area.
Honestly Im just a crafter at heart. I liked star wars galaxies' system where I could become 100% crafter and zero combat skills. Harvesting resources, making stuff to sell in my shop, and hiring a band to play at a Sales event was my idea of fun. And I was vital to the combat crowd because I provided a much needed service.
I dont suppose there is any chance I can just be a crafter in this game ?

Sadly no, I really don't think so.
However imo I believe there is going to be a lot of opportunites for politics, guild management and tactics, if toe-to-toe combat isn't your thing. The world is complex enough on many levels to make officer type play viable (you know the guy in WoW AV battleground who just yells at others where to go and keeps an eye on the global situation)
Crafting is most probably going to be quite secondary. Varied and useful but definitely not enough to fill up your whole gaming time.
Originally posted by markoraos Hi Wicky, I think you'll have to find someone else to massage your rather large feet. TR's control point system is NOT PQs. While they're both PvE events that is right where similarities end because there is slew of differences. One, your very own example of the WAR PQ shows that tasks within a PQ are much more varied than waves of mobs attacking your control point. A TR control point assault may be considered a type of a PQ but PQs are much much more. Two. The rewards system in PQs is light years away from TR one - read it up. While this new "prestige" TR introduced a few months ago (quite some time after Mythic announced their "influence") might seem similar, the rewards are distributed in a completely different manner (the "Vegas" system) that dictates a different playing style. Three. PQ's are always started by players. Their function is quite different from TR control point thing. A PQ is a "grind enhancement" feature - you start grinding some mobs and weird and interesting things start happening. It is not just "attack or defend a spot on the ground from waves of mobs" I concur the basic similarities of the two systems but calling them equal is plainly false.
As for Tome of Knowledge (not "Tomb of Knowledge" ffs) being a slight variation of XBox360 achievement system don't make me laugh. Your profile in Xbox (or whatever it's called) is not your RPG character. You don't get new skills or items for your character with it. You do not get information unlocks etc. I'm really sorry but this is a plain case of "EvE is a Spacewar clone". In addition even you admit that it is an unique amalgamate of stuff already found in other games. Ofc large parts of it are and why shouldn't it be so? I'm sorry but if you build a house from bricks which everyone else use it doesn't mean that the house is a "copy" of all the other houses, and especially if you are using combinations of materials that no one else uses. Your standards of originality are completely irrational - ofc games, like any other creative endeavor, build on the achievements of predecessors. 99% of originality is finding a new combination or pre-existing features that through a synergistic process become a new feature. Both PQs and Tome of Knowledge satisfy this definition completely.
Dear Philip,
Tabula Rasa's control point system is a public quest. Sure, you don't have a stationary NPC spoon feeding you on what you have to do in order to achieve the goal and the rewards are not all that great but suck it up and except it - it is a public quest.
And your "TOME" of Knowledge is the XBOX system; mythic says so themselves so for you to disagree with the people who built the damn thing speaks volumes about your opinions on this topic.
"It is not just "attack or defend a spot on the ground from waves of mobs" Are you sure this is not a public quest in WAR? I'm pretty sure the last part of the public quest I posted sounds exactly like this.
And i love how you state:
"...you cannot say that everything found in WAR PvE can be found in other games because it is simply and demonstrably not true."
and when I show you that that is infact true you roll over on your back and post:
"99% of originality is finding a new combination or pre-existing features that through a synergistic process become a new feature. Both PQs and Tome of Knowledge satisfy this definition completely."
Thems sure is a bunch a fancy new yorker werds thare when you just coulda used werds like "copy" or "rip off" or "clone".
Now go outside, Philip, and fetch me a switch from the big tree I'm going to beat you for being insolent! Afterward, you can forget about my feet I now want you to rub lotion on my crusty old nipples. Chop chop!
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
Based of their videos, there are plenty of things for a PVE person to do in WAR.
1. Every quest you do and boss mob you kill helps the WAR effort. So you can contribute without getting directly involved.
2. There are raids and instances available. Some of them even open up after the RVR guys run thru and destroy everything, such as the capital cities.
3. The crafting system is unique. Experimenting to find more and more interesting combos sounds neet.
4. Best of all, the PVE types will never have to go into the RVR areas. Free from getting ganked unless you choose to go into those areas. You can quest and craft without any fear of being annoyed.
Usually in MMO's, the PVP has no bearing on the rest of the world, but with RVR, Mythic has provided a Symbiosis between PVE and PVP. So those of us that kill and gank really need those of you who think its dumb. Kinda funny when you think about it. You would think more companies would figure this out instead of just poopooing on PVP in general.

Not unless they add more crafting professions.
Right now it's limited to potions and trinkets.
