If you're struggling that much to get the game to work don't bother.
My cpu exceeded the min, but by a small amount. I upgraded my vid card (by far my worst part of my machine) and I run conan at about 8-12 fps in old tarantia. Playable, but irritating.
I won't be able to do anything in this game but level and 1 group dungeons. So there's no point for me to pay the monthly fee unless I want to buy a new computer or upgrade my cpu. Imo, at this time AoC isn't good enough for me to do that.
I happily shelled out £35 today. After a few hours of installation and patching - I was very excited to see what AoC had to offer.
And 7 hours and 3 characters later: My cancellation reason to Funcom: Extremely repetitive. No freedom of movement nor exploration. No way to skip cut-scenes. Cringe when I have to create chars - story extremely linear. TERRIBLE voice acting and accents. Non fluid char movements and control response. Makes me sad. Basically its a bad version of Guild Wars with an enhanced LOTR-ish feel with very awkward arcade key-mashing. Looks and feels good initially - wears of very quickly. On the plus side: Good gfx. Good music. Sigh. Flame me all you want, but when you have played lot of MMOs as I have, you know can tell a true gem from the rest. Regards.
Extremely repetitive.... sounds like an MMO.
No freedom of movement.... Well, they did say this game was going to be zoned, and WAS NOT an open world mmo... so bad judgement on your part
Cut-sceans... must not be hitting the write buttons.
Voice acting... sub par? { Mod Edit }
As far as the last 2. must not have enough in your system to play the game effectively
Really? You really have a quad core with 4g of ram and duel 9800GTX's and you get under 10fps on all low settings? seriously? Then you must have some HARDCORE bloatware on your system man.
There is a known issue of the FPS bugging out on low settings now matter what your v-card is. A developer made this clear in the official forums under the tech page.

quiting this mmo couse you only played 7 hours... goes to show you never really wanted to like this game to start, i think you just tryed it couse you have nothing else to play and are mad couse the game was not like the last game you loved.. call me crazy but even games i hate i played more then just 7 hours
i just finished the torage starter area and it took me over 20 hours and i loved every hour of it so far.
We really need an "Amateur Review" thread. Seriously.
it happens in every MMO forum thread here when a newly MMO released. Its normal to see this. I would just go with the flow. Also, if seeing negative reviews offends easily I would not open the thread. It may help.

Wow.. so sad that you did not see it through.. considering I'm having a blast and just hit 40th. The game was getting harder to find new things to do at 35.. at 40, it opened up more than ever and Im thrilled to be breaking down fortress doors with my war mammoth, wearing my first true cape from the Blood Sanctum and getting started on building weapons as a smith for the guild City which just went up tonight! It was amazing seeing the city built, and I am damn glad I contribued resources to it. There's a beautiful vista of mountains and strong defenses at the keep, many of us were there to witness it being built and the guild leader made us all the rank of Elder for being at the cities opening. It's a whole new game past 20 and more so at 40, and it only takes 7 days to get to 40th, not too fast, not too slow.
I don't think you gave it a chance. I felt the beginning was pretty linear as well. Then i switched over to the multiplayer instances in Tortage and found plenty of quests to do all over the place.
Not your cup of tea I guess. Oh well. I'm enjoying it.

You really didn't give it a chance . Of course saying that it seems half of the real "MMO fans" on these forums don't actually LIKE to play MMOs, go figure.
Either way the game world is incredible. I've ran "Sanctum of the burning souls" as well a couple of times, amazing instance. Its honestly more epic feeling and looking than both SSC and TK in WoW combined.
The game world is zoned, yes, but its not linear by any chance. You have plenty of options of places to go after 20 (I'm 35 at the moment and having a blast).
Either way read some reviews and general opinions of others on the game, its gotten incredible reception so far.

After you leave Tortage the game is just different zones and they aren't linear at all. I promise.
Yes they are, don't lie to the man. I'm lvl 45 and the post 20 zones are no different in gameplay to Tortage daytime.

You make it seem as if any MMO somehow gets surprisingly different (quest, PvP, ect.) after the lower levels.

agree..now i say to aoc team go work on vanguard..make new endgame..fix the rest of the bugs...and learn what a real mmo is..
For a new MMO, you'd expect the game to be more advanced and generally better than past games. After four days of playing, leveling to 33, I have already canceled my account. MMO's which are seven years old are more fun and have better systems than this game has. I guess people hype games just due to how good their graphics are.
Main reason funcom have made this game is grafics, they stated this serveral times only grafics is most importend featers of AoC.
These days have shown majority are only intrested in grafics if game sucks they dont care they wanne see awsome scenery, but the funny thing is the 3 year old oblivion looks superior to AoC even with only dx9:P
Ill play my month free and see how it is at later lvls but first 20lvls are very weak, 6 year old game with 2008 grafics.
PvP down right dumb when you been killed in a dungeon you been portalled to entrance and when res someone can kill you right away, this is no pvp this is plain stupid helping silly kids gank free without risk.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I'm still waiting for all the apologies I demanded when I told everyone this game blew donkey dorks... but no.. people who never even played the game defending it with their life cause it has titties and blood. People with top of the line computers are getting 10 fps, im talking about quad core with 4 gigs of ram and duel 9800 gtx's. The game is still in beta and everyone is funding it ;p
I'll give the OP his opinion. After being in Tortage for seven hours he is an authority on the game. You however, are full of crap. Very few people cannot run the game at acceptable frame rates. I have a single core and a 7950 graphics card and run it quite fine. I also head up several AOC guilds and I know hundreds of people who run the game without a fault. Those few that had a problem were straightened out in a matter of minutes. You lie...plain and simple.

They don't but I'm tired of people trying to dupe people into believing this one is different. After tortage the zones are a larger and more varied but that's it, the gameplay is identical to Tortage daytime, get a quest, complete a quest, get a quest, complete a quest, rinse and repeat until high enough for next zone. You could of course go to the resource zones and run around like an idiot competing with others for the few resource nodes or try the awful crafting system but these are just addons to the standard gameplay, and not very well done addons either.
A lot of people are still finding the game new and fresh but after they have levelled a couple of characters to 80 they will be as bored of it all as they are with other MMO's.
7 hours of play on 3 different characters? That's impressive, looks like you were just buying the game so you could say it sucked.
This game isn't linear. Linear means, there's only one way, in AoC i'm quite sure there's a few other ways included at least as far i've played. Some people just throw the "linear" towards anything these days it seems.
I'm running it on a moderate system, with my GFX card being the bottleneck, and i run it decently fine, 30 fps out in the field, around 20 or so in the towns. Not super duper but i'll be getting myself a 8800GT next month, so that should turn it 180*, a little shame it requires that much but GF 8800GT is so cheap these days it really shouldn't be a problem at all, i mean that card is freaking cheap and you get great boost out of it.
I'm enjoying AoC and i was sceptical at first of this game, i loved the lore so was sorta going to buy it one way or the other to "validate" my concerns, just like OP is doing it, but the wrong way hehe.
I am really enjoying the game for now, but I see a lot of problems with it. I just leveled my main toon to 20 today, and I'm scared to spend too much time outside of Tortage because I get the sense (both in game and on the internet) that the game for 20+ is a letdown and "unfinished".
I really like the quest line in Tortage - and how parts of it are class-specific. I love the voice acting and will miss it later on. The environments in and around Tortage did seem conscrictive, but the ambience is good.
I'm loving the combat system, though it had a learning curve for me. I still don't see any rewards or penalties for PvP. No real features of an MMO - except for seeing a bunch of other people running around. Chat window and social panel are not fully functional and not user-friendly.
I'll continue to play AoC hard for the next couple of weeks, but unless some major improvements are made, I won't be subscribing. It's a shame, because I think the game has so much potential. Who knows, maybe I'll come back in a year to see how it is.

Linear in a game means u have to finish one quest to get access to the next. The prime example of linear gameplay are adventure games where u have to finish one puzzle/riddle to go to the next and advance in the game's plot. Shoot-em up games are also linear, u have to kill every1/the boss in each lvl to advance to the next. The best example of non-linear games are the elder scroll ones. U have the main storyline quest but u can advance in many other, advancing your toon at the same time, without even touching the main quest.
I have no idea what AoC is like. But if all u get is one series of quests u need to complete before u can take on the next, that is the definition of linear gameplay.

I'd much rather open it, cry and whine. It's how I try to fit in.
It's not the negative review bit I comment on, it's the idea that people think their comments matter so much that they all warrant their own thread.
I thought about making a thread about it, until I realized the irony.
lol ok )
