Just finished my 7 day free trial of POTBS, i really dont know why people hate the game so much, i only got to about lvl 10 but my time on the game gave me a pretty good idea of what the rest of the game is like, i was a British Privateer with Dirty Fighting, this is what i thought about the game......
Good Points
- The ship to ship combat is fantastic
- The player creation system is great
- The starter missions/tips are very helpful and help you to understand and enjoy the game more
- The exploration is good, going to places like Tortuga and Port Royal is cool
- The Normal combat system does have flaws but i thought it suited the game
- The music is amazing
- Nearly every port is different
Bad Points
- The graphics arent superb
- Lots of LAG! at times
- Not much exploration outside of the towns
- Barely saw any other players
- The econemy looks complicated
- Ship combat is often too difficuilt
- The world is too small
Anyone agree/disagree with this?

I agree with most of it, only the lag is probaly due to your computer and ship combat get easier as you become higher level. Once the game is polished up to the point where the game is enjoyable for everyone and they start marketing towards fileplanet for a 14 day trial then im sure the population will rise. Also the economy isn't that complicated it just a has a slightly longer learning curve than most other mmos. The crafting in this game is my favorite than any other mmo out there. The map itself is big but the devs made ships move too fast on the OS therfore the map has become too small due to the speed at which you travel.
I agree with most except I dont consider the town capital cities to be considered exploration not in a game based in the wild of undiscovered country. I go to peurta de plata. There is a "big house" there with a plantation behind it. I can't get into the house and I can't go into the fields and go beyond the fence with the invisible wall.
The Economy I dont consider complicated and still to this day dont understand how people say it is. It took me 15 minutes to figure out how it worked and then that was over. Crafting is 5 minutes every 3 days of button clicks and money is made the same way as other games where you buy up the cheap stuff, try to pump up the price and build whatever it is that the game has as a sellable item. The AH a lot of people had a hard time with as well I also found this not that hard to grasp and realized as I purchased an item as a test that the listing was the last selling price in about 5 minutes.
The ship combat is good. The instancing it occurs in is not so good though so that takes away from it as it turns it from MMO to almost stand alone as you drift into the instance with your enemy.
The other thing that was never solved was the text etc. I still can't read it (well when I left they had just replaced it with the new interface the same problem existed washed out text colours on a pasty white background made it very very very hard to read for eyes that were no longer in their prime 20/20 vision and young.
So the plus side is the ship combat which is good but I want the rest before I resubscribe. That includes text I can read, lands I can explore and removal of most of the instancing.
I also found that the character creation was not bad but there are better older games out there where you can customize much more. Everyone has the same face and hair you can't make the hair longer or shorter or make him fat or thin or give him a big huge nose on that face. So the face is the face and the body is the body.. I can't even alter height.
However the ship combat is good
I bought the game for $50, tossed it after 5 days...... but thats me, i'll say the 3 things in the OP's 'bad points' that determine whether i enjoy myself or not in an MMO generally.
"Not much exploration outside of towns"
"Barely saw any other players"
"The world is too small"
Those are 3 of i'd say 5-6 reasons that I didn't continue playing this game....
And I was REALLY looking forward to it too...
