Downplaying the combat. This is simply absurd. The combat in AoC is LEAGUES ahead of any other MMO. Show me another MMO that has at least over 5 different attack animations for the same class same weapon!! Good Luck! Would you rather hit the auto-attack and watch the one-two swing animations you get from every OTHER MMO out there?? LOL!
I am a big fan of the game. I have played almost every MMO to date. However, you are completely off-base with this declaration. The combat is identical to every game in the genre. Sure they have that whole "shielding" system, which is essentiailly a rock/paper/scicor variation of auto attack. That is cool for about an hour. After that, it just becomes tedious, and makes you wish you could just press auto attack and not have to deal with it.
I think you are off base. Over 80% of the gameplay in MMOs come from combat. If you want to be lazy and just watch the stats tally up your kill, by all means, go back to the auto-attack. I like more involved combat because it's something that will take the most time in an MMO. Yes, you do have to manually swing your blade, yes, you can block and it actually be effective, yes, you can watch fatalities to get that extra boost of realism, and yes, there are way more animations to see than the conventional MMO. I'm glad that I can back up or go forward and get an advantage. It takes more than just rolling a random number generator to get a kill in. Perhaps that's why I feel like a bad-ass even fighting mobs that are several levels above me. You won't even THINK about doing that in WoW or any other MMO for that matter.
So it s your opinion the combat is great but if someone doesn t agree they re wrong? I m on the complete opposite of how you feel about the combat. I hate the click icon , another one lights up, hit that one, then another , one more lights up hit that one, on and on. I was watching the stupid icons more then the actual fight. Now if you like it great , i didn t and you cant say i or anyone else that doesn t like it is absurd. Take DAOC for example. I would be on my warrior, i parried, no little icon lights up i had to react to it knowing what styles follow. It took some thinking and planning, not just hit glowing icon that follows hitting another button over and over.
Because every single complaint (except for bugs which comes with the territory) has little to no merit since the chances of the greatest MMO to grace the PC (WoW) has those same exact issues.

Is it new for you that people just have a different taste about games ? dont disqualify yourself with such a message, common The like or dislike about games are so wide, you will find that in every game out there.
it depends what you call trolling . to me age of conan has great graphics and its gameplay is nt too bad . nothing speacial but passable and its certainly worth a play even if you on stay with it a short while or just return for the odd month . i dont like all the instancing that could really get annoying after a whie , to me the game seams like it could be better suited to the consol market . the combat is fun but its very hack and slash . also the system requirments to play the game at an acceptable level are just too high for the average homs system ( another reason it may to better on the xbox360) .
the biggest problem with conan as an mmorpg is that it really is a massive mutliplayer online game because of the limits on how many players can be in one zone at a time and the mirrored zone systems . in actual fact its more of a limited multiplayer online roll playing game an lmorpg if you will .
its not terrible like vanguard but it has huge flaws in its design and i m betting its not what a lot of gamers want .
it has had 400 thousand players join in its first week . early indications are at least one third have canceled thier subs . thats a huge drop off in the first month if it true .
i think conan will stabilse at around 300 thousand players on the pc (maybe more on the xbox) enough to make it a relative financial success. but certainly not the next big thing in the genre .
it will never have one million players on the pc .
"What point is there in your continued rantings when you know that not everyone shares your opinions? " Hmm. Not sure who you are referring to, hope its not me. Free speech man, we all have a right to that - and you're not forced to listen either. but to your question - what is our point? Well mine is simply not to bash the game, as I said there is a lot I like about it. And there is even more I don't like. So my purpose in pointing out what I don't like is in the hopes they (the developers) change some of this...and with proper and justly professional communication hopefully swoon some others my way and gain a concensus that there are things that need changing. Examing my post above, if AOC had better group play the game would be a far better experience. I've offered some things I think the game should do that it doesn't, like allow groups to stay together when they move to a new instanced area. I know it's a NOVEL concept that has only been in games for 10 years, but here's hoping the good folks at AOC can get a clue and join the fun.... do you not think AOC should allow groups to see each others health/stamina/mana bars? should I not be able to see my group mates on the map? and I certainly should not be able to tell what instance I am in so I can tell my buddy who just logged on which one to join (shift F9 is not a feature)....??? do you not think these are GAPING flaws in an MMO that are inexcusable?
Now you make a good point. And I'm sure that that can be modded into future patches. But having said that, can you honestly say that the game is bad because of the weak grouping?
I personally wanted more solo capability because I hate grouping. It simple kills the immersion for me unless everyone RPs their character. What I absolutely HATE about MMOs is the reliance on grouping in order to get past a quest. This is very bad for casual gamers. Why should we suffer putting numerous hours into the game just to get past that boss? Again, it KILLS the immersion.
I think Funcom wanted to address this with their MMO and they've done a great job with it. However, grouping has had to suffer slightly (very easy to kill bosses in a group).

Outside of being a total action game, I think Funcom went the correct route with the combat.
Too many games rely on Auto-attack and it basically kills the immersion. DDO had a great idea, but it wasn't robust enough nor offered many attack animations.
Clicking a button is the ONLY tool one has to fight in combat. Whether it's left-clicking the mouse button and watching your character or doing a series of combos. In the end, you are still clicking SOMETHING over and over again for every combat encounter (even in action games).
To try to change the auto-attack paradigm is a bold move and when I talked with the developers about it when they were showing off AoC back in 2005 at the GDC, I told them that auto-attack is old and gamers wanted more out of combat.. Looks like I got my wish!

MMO s IMO should never ever be solo centric. Have options for both and be very viable to solo yes, but no way in hell should someone soloing all the time be on par with a grouper. I am a big soloer myself but i realize these games are meant to be social. Why should i reap the benefits someone and their group spent alot more effort to achieve. I love grouping as well and do alot but my RL makes it hard alot of the times. That said as i said before i realize i shouldn t reap the benefits groups get as i m soloing, if so whats the point of grouping ever. All they have to do is make a game where it makes it so a soloer can compete with a group etc just slightly lower ie gear rewards etc. Then when or if they re ready to group up they can achieve the better rewards. I m not going to point out what game is doing this well, but i ll tell you theres a couple coming out that do this decently, from what i ve read.

So what? I won't lose any sleep over it.
Instancing is the best option to controlling game performance. It's nothing new. WoW even has it in their dungeons. It's just the sheer limitation of the amount of information being fed through the pipe. Oh well..
I'm so sick of hearing the negative backlash of this game from the people who are "trolling" the game. Why am I getting sick? Because every single complaint (except for bugs which comes with the territory) has little to no merit since the chances of the greatest MMO to grace the PC (WoW) has those same exact issues. Let's look at an example: Many people complain about the quests going from point A to point B and killing X. What MMO does NOT do that??? ALL OF THEM DO!! What do you expect? A SP experience in an MMO designed to last for years?? Wake up! You can't fault AoC for doing what is commonly accepted in the MMO community for questing. Another example, talking about how the voice-acting (which was superb on the noob island) goes away and you only have expressions and have to read the text. Again, what MMO has voice throughout the ENTIRE game?? NOT happening!! Sound is expensive and therefore people should be thankful that they at least got 20 levels of it! Downplaying the combat. forgive us "trollers" but we tend to get upset when another MMO we follow for 5 years ends up in the trash can like the last 5 MMO's weve bought.
We are upset because we are big fans of Conan, having grown up reading the comics and watching the movies. It was a dream to see Hyboria come to life.
And frankly we are mad as hell at the entire industry because it is letting us down. It has forsaken us for the younger instant gratification gamers.

having paid for the game, i feel i have the right to say that's it's sh1t, if i think it's sh1t. which i do.
Fine.
All I'm saying is if you think it's sh11 for whatever reason, I'm sure that most of the MMOs out there would be sh11 for you because it basically does the same thing! Get while it's trolling???
If you disliked something in the game, then use a counter-example of another MMO that DOES NOT do it.

It's not as easy as you describe in the development process. You can't please everybody. Period.
Also, what you read and what amounts on the screen when you actually have it in hand are two different things. I'm 100% positive that if one game pleases you in being able to shuffle solo and partying, that there'll be some other shortcoming with it.. like combat, story, sound or immersion.

Well i m not sure about that but we have our own opinions. Something might lack but to go one way to the extreme or the other is a bad move IMO. Solo centric people get bored, group dependant people get frusterated. It can be done and will you ll see:)

LOL! I'm also a big Conan fan and waited 5 years for this game. Guess what? It's not perfect, but neither is any game. I'm just happy I'm able to finally play the game I've been waiting for!
Do you think when Duke Nukem comes out that people won't buy the game even if it doesn't compare to the likes of COD4? People are fans of a genre. Period. They will support that genre because they like the franchise. Period.

it's a fair comment - i *do* think pretty much all MMOGs out there are sh1t at the moment, fundamentally because the genre has not evolved at all in the last 10 years.
Seems that when people don't like a game, or are jealous others are enjoying one, the worst part of humanity pops out their ugly heads to repeatedly post negative tales of woe.
Thats not to say the guy that post 3 or 4 times about how his computer can't run the game and therefor the game sucks is a troll.
However, the asshat that post 100's of messages about often fabricated issues on the same game, which they no longer play, played for a week, or perhaps never has played at all, is the very definition of a troll.
Funcom blocked the AoC forums from the public. Post there.
So? Sony did this as well shortly after SWG went live. Why shouldn't they? That way they can pay attention to REAL issues that REAL PAYING customers are having. Not reading all the pointless troll posts of ppl who hate the game yet they don't even play it but have so much bad to say about it.
I think they could at least make the AoC forums read-only. If it is blocked a prospective buyer can't weigh the pros and concerns.

I hope, this post won´t turn me into a troll:
1. Did I miss the game, where auto-attack did more or equal damage than a style/combo? I mean, why the upsets against few-damage-auto-attacks? I played "2-3" MMOs as a tank/melee-class. There was NO fking case, where I only used auto-attack.
2. Roleplay-Games ARE and HAVE ALWAYS BEEN a level- and bit random- oriented issue. Bards Tale, Might`n Magic, AD&D, Pagan (only part of Ultima that I have played), CoX, VG or EVE (wtf?)
3. Combat and fatalities (occure, when you kill a human with a combo) are nice. But for how long? "Yeah, I decapitated the 412th enemy"
4. There is NO content besides 1,2,3, "roll-a-head" in my 18-levels-experience (crafting etc)
5. The point that I can understand the least, is the weak char-progression and itemization. I mean, if you know Funcom´s Anarchy Online, do you remember, how you hard you did try to equip the 20-level-higher-than-you item? "If I fit this implant, then I can fit that implant, then a buff, then this gloves..."
6. Before AoC Lotro for me was the most linear MMO (GW not counted). Replayability was so bad there, because you had to do the exact same zones/quests again (ok, but class-quests). In WoW you at least could choose the opposite faction (hell, I mentioned WoW)
The graphics and the girlies with their botox-lips ARE nice. But for the whole rest you simply cannot say, that there is all fine.
"Hey, give this game a chance, it released few days ago." Do you remember the PvP in WoW? It will never be good there, because the game was not designed for. But this one is just a crystal-orb view.

However, grouping has had to suffer slightly (very easy to kill bosses in a group).
i think you are confusing 'trolling' with 'constructive criticism'. if you don't like it, don't read it.
having paid for the game, i feel i have the right to say that's it's sh1t, if i think it's sh1t. which i do.

Oh well..

We are upset because we are big fans of Conan, having grown up reading the comics and watching the movies. It was a dream to see Hyboria come to life.
And frankly we are mad as hell at the entire industry because it is letting us down. It has forsaken us for the younger instant gratification gamers.
Fine.
All I'm saying is if you think it's sh11 for whatever reason, I'm sure that most of the MMOs out there would be sh11 for you because it basically does the same thing! Get while it's trolling???
If you disliked something in the game, then use a counter-example of another MMO that DOES NOT do it.

Exactly you got your wish I didn t sadly. Putting it bluntly i hate it lol as i said before.
Best game ever?
Gawd, I loved that game.Well no, not really, actually it kind of sucked.
But not as much as AoC TBH.
Now you make a good point. And I'm sure that that can be modded into future patches. But having said that, can you honestly say that the game is bad because of the weak grouping?

I'm just happy I'm able to finally play the game I've been waiting for!Do you think when Duke Nukem comes out that people won't buy the game even if it doesn't compare to the likes of COD4? People are fans of a genre. Period. They will support that genre because they like the franchise. Period.
Fine.

it's a fair comment - i *do* think pretty much all MMOGs out there are sh1t at the moment, fundamentally because the genre has not evolved at all in the last 10 years.
here is a post i just made in a related thread; it covers everything i want to say.

AoC fanboys are so hilarius.
