spending a weekend on a secluded tropical island. Sure the beach is breathtaking and the sunsets magical, but then you find out that there is no bathroom, it's cold at night, the food is raw and by the third day you just want to be back in the comfort of your home.
If Funcom expect me to move there permanently, they better come up with the necessary facilities. A breathtaking view is just not enough.

You got the nude girls to keep you warm silly! What more can you ask?

The OP makes a good analogy. There are a lot of attractive features that AoC offers. Unfortunately, we are all aware that this game is not finished. I would have more faith in Funcom's ability to improve the game and fix the problems if there were more community support.
For now, many of us (paying customers) can't access the forums and can't get email responses. That sends a bad message to me, especially when we are being asked to drop $15 a month, hoping that we'll see improvements. We may indeed see improvements - but many of them are things that should have been resolved or including prior to the release. The new font colors of the chat window and the activation of the trader in last night's patch are simply putting in parts of the game that should never have been left out in the first place.
Also, I may be the only one to feel this way, but unless they add in some voices for NPC's outside of Tortage, I won't be subscribing. Tortage was wonderfully immersive, and I'm having a hard time giving a dern about anyone past level 20. I don't expect the full voiceovers for all dialogue, that patch would be ridiculous - just a brief acknowledgement or response (ala LotRO).
For now, I'm still enjoying the island paradise, but I feel like I'm on the last day of my vacation and I will be going home tomorrow - so I want to have a reason to come back!

, agree with the OP, boys are just happy if they can run arround with a stick, crashing skulls, mature ppl need something else.
I must be the only one who doesn't find the game breathtaking to look at. Endless shades of tan and green.
I can't remember any MMO launch that had all the promised features from day one. Yet, apparently everyone expects anyone post WOW to have a complete 100% polished game ready by release.
This just isn't realistic due to the enormous amount of updates and patches it takes (with the addition of customer feedback) to achieve that polish. I would like to know exactly which holy grail of a game it is that you guys come from that would lead you to expect a perfect game at release.
I will remind you of WOW's release simply because I believe it is a game most of you probably have played. This game was released missing MANY features at launch including some whole zones that were unpopulated and a ton of bugs.
Personally, I have found Age of Conan to be extremely playable at this stage in the game. Sure, there are bugs... there are lots of them at this point. But I am not so delusional as to expect the game to be polished at this point and neither should you. Do yourself a favor and go back to WOW or whatever other MMO you play and give Conan a change again 6 months down the line. By then, I'm sure these minor (yet apparently game-breaking) bugs should be resolved and the hotel on the island will have proper plumbing.
i thought the point of MMORPG's is that they aren't finished...that there is new content added every so often, that they are fixing bugs and such. if people expect any game to run 100% perfect right out of the box they are, well, stupid...
No one is saying they expected the game to be 100% perfect out of the box. What many are saying is that some of the major features of Conan and other MMO's (traders, a working chat box, a forum that people can access) were not available upon the release, and that's not due to "glitches" that the masses of people caused. It's lack of preparation (or concern, in the case of the forums) on Funcom's part.
Pointing out flaws with a game's release doesn't make a person stupid. Ignoring obvious flaws and pretending that everything is okay? That's another story. Many of us like the game, but we're trying to decide whether it's worth a subscription based on early flaws.

It took them less than a working week to fix all the issues that you stated.

They were probably more worried about the sudden impact of a large amount of people would have on their servers, of course you could say well open beta should have tested that already, but if i remember correctly you had to have a subcription to website to get a open beta key, which wouldnt make it an open beta imo.
forums could have been up yes, but maybe the other 'glitches' (chat box etc...) were from the discs? considering that they were made how long ago? and the client that was released on the disc could have been a bit incompatible with the updates that were released with/for the downloaded version (beta) instead.
if they fixed those issues that promptly, then i would be glad to give them my money to play the game. =D
I must confess to being slightly disappointed, but it's early days yet. I think I will keep my subscription to AoC & my previous main MMO running in parallel for a while to give it a decent chance.
Tortage is indeed breathtaking but as the OP said, once you have drunk it all in you really need to go the bathroom. I know it is a deliberate attempt at a different style, but compared to other MMOs the newbie zone goes on a bit too long & there are very few resources in Tortage.
Despite only having time to play casually, I like to experiment with several alts & I am not looking forward to having to do the very long 'Destiny Quest' line for each. I still haven't finished it on the first character I created & whilst it is very well done, after a couple of iterations it will start to get annoying. If they just don't want people to have alts then why all the character slots?
I do really like the game though, it's just not quite what I expected somehow.
If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?
Take the Hecatomb? TCG What Is Your Doom? quiz.
Well its a different mode of making a review..but its pure truth...i agree 100%
This has been an extremely smooth launch in my experience. I have truly felt that Funcom is listening to our complaints because things have been getting fixed extremely quickly.
This fact plus the overall stability if the release make me think that this game will improve very quickly.
This is probably the best description of the game that i have seen.
Bravo.
Oh and you forgot to mention that the palms are cardboard, the magical sunset is painted on canvas and that ocean is actually a pool of tapwater... situated on some shopping mall's parking lot.
It's good enough for some teh awesomez screenshots for the travel brochures though...
