My first encounter with ironman was with diablo, who i think inventend the concept.

It was fun with diablo2 as well, and remember ironman was not just about permadeath but about only using items you and your group got hold of.

D1 took like 10 hours to complete, 20 in ironman mode.

    D2 took about the same.

Most of todays MMO's have 300+ hours of content before max level.

No one want to risk that!

The current trend in MMO's is a less and less severe death penalty. In AoC, the death penalty is meaningless. like -2% attack rating for 30 minutes, unless you go click your corpse.

You don't need to have it 'forced' on you.

    Join a Permadeath/Ironman guild.

When you die, you get to transfer your items, then delete your character.

Unless what you REALLY want is to force your play onto others.

    That will never work.

Only a very, very small portion of the population wants Permadeath.

And it is not really needed as you can do it all for yourself.

are you all telling me i cant find a server like that anywhere :(

If you want perma-death you can always log out of the game and delete your character if you die

just doesnt have the desired effect...

  • DDO has unofficial permadeath guilds that work out OK.

Anyway I believe Blizzard said something like less than 5% of players did Hardcore/ironman tyoe play in Diablo.

So don't expect to see it very often,  especially since for many games the content is made to kill you at least a few times.

It would be fun though, if they set aside just one server in a game with perma-death.  A lot of players I know like a hardcore challenge, as an accompanying game-style to their normal game.  It is not the main playing experience, but a sideline challenge.  I think it would be quite popular, as gamers are curious to see how long they can keep a character alive.  An extra server with this rule is not asking too much.

Yes, people will say that you have the option of deleting your character, but in a challenge, you want to be on a level, playing field, and if the server is dedicated to perma-death, then people know what to excpect when they play, so chances are they will not get too attached to their character.

The only MMORPG I have seen that has this rule is Shaiya Online.  An asian, free-to-play game that is remarkably similar in gameplay and looks to Lineage2.  You have to level up through each category of difficulty, until finally you get the perma-death option.  Wherein, you have a set amount of time after dying to get rezzed, and if you fail to do so, then it is game over.

you see i was lookign at this from a more pvp standpoint. Im a big pvper and i think it would just add so much more meaning to guild warfare if you could kill and be killed dead. AoC i still think would be a rgeat game for this on an open pvp server, so cities can go i mean. Imagine how holding a city would be a real task since you wouldnt spawn back, and there wouldnt be any less than a fully planned attack. I think realistically they would need to curve the XP so people level faster to keep anyone interested, personally I feel it would enhance the game experience 10 fold.

try mythos it has an option when you make a char you can play normal or hardcore, hardcore is a bit harder but has better drops or you can chose normal+elite or hardcore+elite.that is permadeath you die it's over you don't even get to transfer your stuff. they also introduced crafting not sure how that is.you will wind up playing a combination between gw and d2.the towns are for all but zones with mobs are only for you and your party.it just doesn't have that dark feeling that d2 had.

not sure if it went in open beta,i had a cb account but got kinda tired of it.anyway check the site mythos.com and see for yourself.but i have to warn you it's f2p so you can expect allot or "bad"people in it but the ones who play elite are usually one iq point above the rest.

Dofus has a hardcore server coming out (it has been delayed for months, duno when we're going to see it again).  I played for a few days when they were beta testing it, and it was a blast.  I like the game in the first place though.  Obviously a tactical turn based flash MMO isn't for everyone.

It was pretty cool though, they had it so items dropped more, you leveled faster, and crafting leveled faster.  It was permadeath, and I feel they did it pretty well for a beta.  They had it so when you died, the person (or monster) who killed you got all of your stuff.  So if you died to a mob, you could level up again, run back to see if the mob was still there, if he was, you could kill it and get your stuff back.

My friend and I were playing, and we killed this one group of mobs that gave us more loot than we could carry, it was hilarious to think of how many people died to the mob.  I think we figured it out to be about 6 or 7 people.

Unfortunately they had to shut the server down and delay it for a while, to figure out how to work disconnecting.  The game battles are instanced, and in the normal game, disconnecting from the battle (due to loss of internet connection or whatever) meant you lost the battle.  Well this was true in the hardcore server as well (which meant your character was reset to level 1 upon D/Cing), so they put it on hold till they could figure out how to manage this, making sure to not make it abusable in PvP.

It annoys me when people say just to delete your character when you die.  It really does not give the same effect.  In response to Shoal's post, I really don't see how it would be 'forcing your play onto others' as everyone who is playing obviously agreed on the ruleset when they rolled on the server.

And besides, hardcore servers don't have to mean perma death.  A hardcore server could include item looting upon death.  I think this is the most reasonable option, I just wish more games would take this route.  I hate how quite a few games out there brush death off like it's nothing.  You just click a button, and you're right back where you were when you died.  There is no fun in that, none whatsoever.

thanks for the replies guys, ya mythos is still closed beta, is found out about that one a while ago :) Havent heard of Dofus but Ill check it out for sure!

I remember trying Dofus some years ago.  Was fun for a couple of hours, but not really my cup of tea.  However, upon reading the post about the hardcore server, it sounded like a good laugh, and I shall definitely be checking it out.

If anyone knows of other games with a permadeath, or hardcore setting, could you let me know please?

Hellgate:London has a hardcore option, you set it when you create the character. They can only group and trade with other hardcore players but share the public areas with normal characters.

I enjoyed it but didn't think it was worth a subscription fee, which was required for hardcore mode when I tried it.
