A new breed of (M)MO players

This is an modest attempt to land this thing. My personal opinion is that the shouting from both sides has gone to far.

People around here seems to get heavily emotional involved against AoC due to the fact that this game lacks some criteria to make it an REAL mmo (from the experienced mmo gamers point of view). Most of you guys in here have been around the mmo scene from the dawn of day. To most of you, AoC is a huge step backwards (as I understand it) with regards to mmo design and it simply fails.

What I think (again my personal opinion) most of you mmo veterans fail to realize is that AoC fills a void in the market. AoC seems to bring a huge crowd of new gamers to the mmo scene, or (m)mo if you prefer. I think that Hyboria will get packed full by those who last year spent most of their time playing first person shooters and various RPG games and console games. And they LOVE it.

So, is this a bad thing? I don't know and to be honest, I really don't care. AoC rates to be a commercial success, the mmo scene will grow bigger, but it most likely won't have much impact on YOUR game.

Great post. It is always nice to see objective comments and not people that expect devs to cater to their every personal whim in order to make it a 'true' mmorpg. Different strokes for different folks.

I agree the big game houses are looking at the consoles for there future MMO's.  The one to watch will be SOE's The Agency which will be released on the PS 3 as well as the PC.  SOE have already stated that it will have no monthly sub, but it will have an RMT system in place to buy items and extra content.  If The Agency does well I expect most big companies will go down the console/RMT route.

I'm hoping Darkfall will get released and be profitable, which in turn will give encouragment to the smaller game studio's to develop MMO's catered to a niche market.  Without the small studio's who would be willing to take development risks and push boundries, unlike the major ones who like to stick to a tested formula, the MMO's of the future would be a stale experience.

This is just my opinion, I'm sure alot of you will disagree with me.
