Housing in MMORPGs

I love player housing. SWG did this the best in my opinion. I left SWG after NGE and went to eq2. While the housing is not as open as SWG it is fun. My guild kids me about how much time I spend decorating my houses in EQ2. If WoW had some form of housing with collectible for it I would still be playing. Here is my EQ2 main in his basement bar area. I loved collecting all the items in that house. Sometime you need a break for m fighting but still want to be in game and housing does that for me.

Housing add a nice distraction from kill, kill, kill.  Without some form of non combat features I tend to get bored fast.

Yes that is from EQ2. That house is the large mansion in South Qeynos. I made a bar area in one corner of my basement next to my torture chamber. You always need a drink after a good day of torture.

I think that houses are just for roleplayers. What are the reasons for having a house?

    - to show off your stuff? 10000 players on your server = 10000 houses on your server. Who will ever enter your house to look at the stuff you have put up? Only roleplayers. Your random player couldn't care less.

    - as part of the combat system? Do not forget that you are not online 24/7. How will you defend it when you are offline? Who would put anything into their house if it could get burned down by your next unfriendly zerg?

    - house itself as a show off object? might work but yet again people might only think: Oh another golden uber house of yet another 24/7 grinder.

    - house as a safe storage? a simple central chest is more practical, takes away less space and can be put at a central location.

I might be overly negative about it but could someone please tell me what a house is good for other than role playing ?

Unless they would be involved in some kind of content stuation or storage, houses are good for nothing. You miss the point though. They are simply fun for some of us. No other reason for them. Does there have to be some grand need for something to make it fun?

With that I can agree, no problem at all.

Don't forget though that the time the developers need to make houses possible + the time needed to create the extra housing areas could be used for other more important stuff...

I take it you never played SWG pre-CU?

Houses had multiple purposes, far beyond just RP.

In fact, they still do, even in NGE. People place houses in the areas surrounding PVP zones, for example, to use as buff huts, meeting places to gather forces before a battle, or to place vendors to sell equipment and consumables to people about to enter battle.

Not gonna write a huge essay here, but housing is a HUGE plus to any game, if implemented correctly.

I remember back in 1999, folks kept asking me if I was stockpiling food. I always answered, "No, I'm stockpiling ammo and making a list of people who are stockpiling food"

Sure time could be spent developing more combat systems, but that is the problem with current mmos to much time spent on omfg I must kill not enough time on everything else.

Houses can be alot more than just showing off. In UO, you could turn it into a store, have to do upkeep, the house could be condemned also and fall. Guild stones were placed in player houses, you could also put things there for safe keeping, show off as well. It was more like a Bank/Guild Hall/Could make interesting PvP fights/Safe area/Shop/A Break.

You make a good point how ever for me the most important stuff in mmos is fun. So things like housing are just as important as questing for me.
