Actually its very confusing the difference.  There is the Chipset these cards are based after.  The nVidia 8xxx series is mostly based on the G80 chipset.  The nVidia 9xxx series is based on the G92 chipset.  However, the confusing part is the 8800 GS/GT/GTS 512MB is based on the G92 chipset as well.  There is another 8800 GTS thats 320MB/640MB based on the older chipset.

What makes it particularly more confusing is that the 8800 GT/GTS 512MB version are some of the best buys in the current videocard market, while the 320MB/640MB versions are subpar.  Also the 8800GS is merely a repackaged 8600 with a new name since they didn't actually sell well.  That and the 9800GTX is buggy and not really a step up from the 8800GTX.

When you are looking at it, the higher the number the better it is.  Within that number it goes

GS<GT<GTS<GTX  Just like Mitsubishi Car names.

the 8800 GS/GT/GTS where fake cards to keep the crowd quite till the 9xxx series

also the names are confusing for people who lack  computer hardware knowledge so nvedia will be making a new easier naming system for its next series of cards
