Quitting posts - trolling?

SlytheSlythe Member UncommonPosts: 952

Now Funcom has decided that if you cancel the game and come onto to their forums to explain why you want to leave (even in a clear, constructive manner with no bashing) it is considered trolling. Wtf is wrong with these guys?

I didn't make a post about leaving but I've seen about 20 this morning, no joke, and they all got locked for "trolling."  Wrong move imo, if someone is leaving because of the BUGS, because of promised content that isn't in-game yet, and they post about it as their reason of leaving, they are considered trolls? That's just wrong on so many levels.

most ppl who make "i quit" posts are just desperate for attention.. they prolly delete everything cause they dont even look anymore if it is contructive posting or not. next to that all those "i leave omg" threads dont make the forums look that good if there are a few 100k ppl quitting :D

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

Well my whole point is that they are not trolling, regardless of the reason they posted "I'm leaving" in the first place. If they just say "This game sux, peace out" then I can understand locking those threads, but people have given long, detailed explanations of why they were leaving and things they hoped would be fixed/improved and they get locked for "trolling."

It just seems like a bad move to me on Funcom's part, I dunno. -shrug-

The problem is, many of the people who make posts like that ARE trolling. They just make a post going, "FU FUcom, U SUK, I KWIT LOLOL", and then sit back and watch the flames. It's old.

Because of that, even the people making legitimate complaints suffer.

  • RdlabanRdlaban Member UncommonPosts: 396

    Well.

After reading some of them since release day I must admit it is nice to lock them. Funcom read every post made. The quitpost is just interesting for funcom anyway:)

Most of those post end up in flamewars anyway. They have made their post; no need for anyone to reply tbh...

  • SlytheSlythe Member UncommonPosts: 952

If you buy a game with promised features and it doesnt have them, and you go onto that game's website and post about how you're leaving because of rampant bugs or missing features, you are not a troll.

And the reason those posts end up in flame wars is because of the people who say things like "Can I have your stuff?" and "So long newb." Yet those people aren't considered trolls.

  • KienKien Member Posts: 520

I think every company locks those threads. I don't see anything wrong with Funcom locking the posts (although I disagree with the decision). After all, Funcom owns the boards.

I agree. Those people are jsut as much trolls. I also agree that it sucks to be pigeonholed a troll if you come on a forum with legit concerns. Especially if they are voiced in an intelligent, amture, logical way. Sadly few are; but it sucks when those that are wind up banned.

That said, I can understand why it happens. It''s a case of mods not having the time (or patience) to read each thread word for word to the end to determine if it's OK or not. Plus, other people trolling turn even good posts into a flame war, and it needs to be locked anyway. A shame.

  • When you have a terrible product, you have to make it at least seem as if it is worthy. Can't have that when half the people who bought the game say they are quiting.

It's not so much what they say, but how they say it.

A thread titled "Quitting this crappy game because my belt is bugged, FC can suck my fat one!!111" is obviously flame-bait and should indeed be locked.

A thread titled "Issues with a belt bug" is constructive criticism and informative and should not be locked.

Problem is forums attract idiots, this one is no exception, and for every interesting dicussion that is held, there must be 10-20 squabbles and flame/troll fests. Often in the same thread.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

AoC is the first game I've ever seen where the rabid fanboi's are 10x worse than the people making the "Goodbye" posts. If someone says "I'm level 80 and I'm bored, nothing to do" he is immediately called a fat, poor kid with no job living in his parent's basement. And then told HOW he is supposed to level in this game to enjoy it.

I completely and totally agree with the above statement.  Reading through threads I have seen the praisers of the game on a rampage like no other.  This is pretty much how all releases go ....... the love/hate ...... back and forth.  The audience that AoC currently holds just seems so prone to attack with name calling and hate it perplexes me.  Curious.........

And I don't even own the game.

there is no free speach in real life what ever made you think there was any on any forum ??

  • bachanambachanam Member Posts: 335

usually when a post is locked and not removed (immediately), the mods still want the thread to be read or seen but dont want people to reply to it

and i mean really, what kind of constructive replies could you get? especially when everyone else in that forum is still playing the game..

Either way it doesnt matter, they quit, funcom just helped them out the door LOL, it's like paying for a room in an establishment, and eventually you get tired of it and on your way out you wanna tell everyone what you thought, in a constructive manner, guaranteed the employees are going to help you out the door before you finish the second sentence. Even if you used your nice voice and put your smile on.

I completely and totally disagree with hairysun and slythe. I think you've got it backwards. And you're right hairysun, the audience does seem prone to attack with name calling, unfortunately this is a game not a television program. The audience is watching while the players are playing. Seperating players from non-players although impossible, would be interesting to see exactly who plays what or has seen what or makes up what.

It certainly seems to be this way. But consider the hate and quit threads for AoC are so common that the balance is potentially that you get more lovers of the game becoming more irritated and hence more vocal.

Haha true, I never thought of it that way.  But since the only people who can access their forums are people who already bought the game, they shouldn't do that. They aren't going to scare anyone off, so I just don't understand it.

TBH, Funcom need to get a handle on PR smartly. This will all blow up in their faces if they dont deal with their customers pragmatically. The customer is ALWAYS right.

having confidence in one's customers is definately a plus, but would you really want a customer to have the opportunity to speak to a large group of your customers about the reasons why he/she is leaving? granted, people playing AoC can spot a fabrication from the truth, and also know when someones bending or twisting the truth to make something sound good/bad, but i just can't see a business letting someone have a chance to influence their client-base in the other direction

It's a form of damage control. If they lock those threads, that keeps them from getting bumped, and they get lost in the pages faster.

Ohhhhh.......the semantics game.  What fun.  Being someone who doesn't own the game and am not currently playing I would fall into the "Audience" category.  I sit back and watch all the poo fly whilst adding my 2 cents when it strike me.  Yep ....... "Non-Player."

Perhaps though, many of these non players (Audience) that you speak of  spent a fair amount of time, enough time, in closed bet to place AoC in the "No Buy" category.  Although I have seen stuff posted about AoC that you could consider a bold faced lie ..... most posts are merely the opinion of the poster.  The lies are easy enough to spot ..... it's the posts that are the same issues over and over and over again by many different people that tend to ring some truth.

Well why should they care why you quit? Why should you feel the need to tell the whole world you quit? Who really cares. Simple point, you cancel your account, you are no longer their customer. So thus, no longer being their customer, you no longer are their concern. FC can then concentrate on the paying customer.

I would. As a business owner, I would want to know why a customer quit using my products. This would help me to make my product better, or in this case, fix what needs fixed.

Errr, you don't want your customer's quitting because they are having problems!! Some people are going to leave because it is not their type of game! Not even WoW has even close to 100% retention. But when people are leaving in droves, writing long, elaborate posts about why then you'd better f**king take notice. These guys seem to be CLUELESS about running a business.
