If you're complaining about graphics, the beta graphics are locked on low settings, and lighting/shaders aren't even finished. Even Crysis will look like shit if you set the game on it's lowest settings and remove lighting and shaders from the game.
The whole "but warhammer had this look first" argument is completely bonkers... Well Tolkien came up with the idea of orcs way before Warhammer ever came about so does that mean that LotR is the only game that matters whether it came first or last? Warhammer is just a copy and so is WoW? You cannot deny the fact that WoW and Warhammers art resembles eachother... They were based on the same ideas. But what you can do is look at how warhammer knew that blizzard had used this style of art and is currently the most popular game and see how they decided to go with the whole tried and true to steal customers away from WoW thinking it will be easy for them to integrate into a new game. On another note on the side of graphics quality... WAR is coming out in 2008? 2009? Who really knows with how long it's been in the making but WoW came out in 2004 after three strategy warcraft games which is was modeled on. Which drew it's ideas from Warhammer fantasy... If wow decided to do a graphics overhaul it would look more like the current WAR? Anyways, this still does not remove the fact that 4 years later... Warhammer decides to make a game that is so similar to an already popular game to steal it's thunder. Warhammer really should have brought something new to the table but I guess we all have to cry about our shitty 4 year old computers that could barely run WoW at the time...
You do not know how purchasing the rights to an IP works. The IP dictates how the art must go.
Look at the Warhammer (not 40k) art work, models, etc.. You will understand what everyone is saying.
Mythic did not style WAR after WoW. They are makign it look like Warhammer. It just so happens that the founders of Blizzard were Warhammer fans, and styled their art and world similar to Warhammer. (so damn similar in fact I don't know why GW didn't sue them)
In fact GW prizes their IP so much they are known for pulling the rights to projects in production that do not meet their standards of what is allowed in the IP.
So if they made WAR look any more realistic, it would not have Warhammer, and GW would have told them to change it or strip the license.
If it looks like WOW when you look at it then it looks like WOW.....
To me though WAR doesn't have the great art style of WOW and the graphics end up looking dated and bland, also the worlds look barren and not interesting and the animations look horrible.
If graphics like this bother some of you so much why do you even bother with MMO's at all? Why not just stick to single player games where devs can put in super high res models with super high res textures and framerate wont matter. I for one like the graphics just fine. My personal experience in games overall is that on a scale of 1-10 the importance of graphics on making a game fun usually rates about a 4 or 5. The importance no not having immersion breaking bugs rates about 8, game mechanics about 9 and gameplay/gamebalance usually runs about 9. If your numbers are reverse of those then the MMO world is not for you due to the simple fact that devs are going to tone down and simplify graphics in all MMO's to make sure there is a large enough playerbase to support the game.
If it looks like WOW when you look at it then it looks like WOW.....

No one is a fanboi, you just need to explain your reasoning behind that statement.
After that, perhaps someone will fill you in on why it is absolutely silly to say such a thing..
The fact you say WoW looks better makes it a Troll Post....WoW has way less model detail, its art style is overly exaggerated because obviously its WoW and comical and tahts the way that game always was. Not to mention WoW is purposely cartoony since Warcraft always WAS cartoony. Its the most Cartoony triple A MMO thats ever been released.
If your saying WAR is not cartoony enough then you've obviously been dropped on your head as a child.
WAR looks like Warhammer and it doesn't look bland at all (I've seen it with my own Eyes Thank you very much). The game is purposely put on its lowest settings in order to eliminate testing issues that could be related to art instead of mechanics. The Testers are there to test the Mechanics NOT the art, this has been said by the Dev's publically.
It has a similiar art style when it comes to the color pallette and some of the basic features since quite frankly Warcraft was a homage in a way to Warhammer. Its got that touch of seriousness with that hint of European humour thats made Warhammer what it is.
The day WoW's graphical art is actually "better' than a new game is the day the Anti Christ finally comes to power.
I'm not going Fanboi on you but I'm sure the hell not going to sit here and let someone say some BS about WAR's art being Bland compared to WoW!!! If you love WoW go play it.

stop looking at current wow and comparing it to old chipset alpha war. This is war now. it looks NOTHING like wow. and the mechanics are not even close. this is dark, this is artistic this is gritty
This is war

Actually, if you look up just about anything in any fantasy setting and do a litlle research you'll find most of it in numerous mythologies and religeons, most if not all were established centuries before Tolkien was writing them into his works. So to say that he alone came up with these concepts is giving too much credit.
On another note, WAR already has a deep fanbase for it's game so the idea of them developing a game for the single purpose of taking over WoW's fanbase is just absurd. Really what kind of company is going to sink that much money just for that one petty reason.

I would think that through a bit more. That "fanbase" you speak of consists of tabletop gamers, not computer game players with decent machines who are itching to play every new Warhammer game that comes out on PC. There have been plenty of Warhammer games that have seen little succes so arguing that focusing on that playerbase is a better bet than focusing on drawing WoW players is imo not a good one.
Bottom line is that ANYONE that says WAR looks like or worse than WoW has no clue. It isn't even close. Take a look at some of the Beta update pics.
Animations? Have you seen all the animations? Didn't think so. I never understood this one personally. Are you looking for particle effects shooting out of everything? When they cast a fireball it looks like a fireball. When you slash in melee it looks like you slashed. What more do you want?
As for the an advanced looking game, get a console. You WILL NOT find an MMO that is running highest graphics available that will be fun and playable in a massive multiplayer environment. Sorry soon as you get 40 people on the screen all casting spells and using abilities with things like collision detection in place your game is going to go into a standstill slideshow. How good are your graphics when its running at 1 FPS?
The graphics in this game look similar to WoW, is this correct? WoW is a few years old now and I think it now looks dated when compared to EQ2, LOtR and now Conan. I was hoping for a more advanced looking game. Can anyone shed any light. and before the flames start I have enjoyed WoW but in my opinion it looks a little old now, roll on WoW2.
Maybe because Warcraft is nearly a direct ripoff of the Warhammer Fantasy Lore that was out for 25 years now. Besides that, if you're talking about graphics technology, everything you've seen is just the skeletons. There's no high res textures, advanced shading and lighting...basically the graphics set on very very low so they can test the core gameplay mechanics. You don't need the highest setting graphics for that; it'll come later.
How much later? If you haven't seen the best that Mythic has to offer by now, then it probably won't happen. We are only months away from release!

Yeah, they are going to leave it as is for release.
they even said in a interview that not all the lighting is even in yet.
And i forget where but they talked about not having high res textures in since thats not the concern of the beta. Graphics you can exactly have the player be "OMG ITS BUGGY!" there testing is better served else where.
Iv been reading this forum for a long time now, and never posted.
i think you people should step back before you hit that "post message" button and consider if your comments add any value what so ever to a conversation. iv done so myself many times and not posted a similar post to this many times... but its getting to the point of rediculousness (is that a word?) now.
have you people had any REAL social interaction lately? you should try it! its wonderful! and in NO way how you are acting on these forums. its almost disgraceful.
A simple question about the graphics in the game mutates into this tired argument about this or that, and tottaly misses the point of the OPs question. if you feel that you can answer him in a decent manner than by all means, let him know that its alpha/beta in all the videos. its a pretty fucking valid question from the videos mythic releases.
i doubt this will get through to any of the thick skulled forum junkies, but hey, its worth a shot.
Problem is that graphics is already much better than WoW or even EQ2 TBH.. it's valid question? Yes, it is.. if it would be true.
anywya, official post about state of art: "All,
I have read many posts here concerning the visuals of WAR. There have been many praises. Thank you! There have been some criticisms. Thank you also. Everything we read here, at least in broad strokes, is digested and considered against our design and visual goals. The subject of this thread caught my attention in particular because it speaks to the status of where we are with WARs development. So first I will discuss a general point that has been echoed here before.
The visuals in WAR are a work in progress. I liken it to rendering CG movies, like the Incredibles or some of the great stuff Blur has done for us. When you watch a pre-lighting render, things just look flat. There are no shadows. There is no ambient occlusion. There is no atmospheric lighting. There is no real surface lighting. How does that relate to WAR? Well, many of the videos and screenshots we have released have been without even a first lighting bake, let along our final lighting pass, which we have never shown. You also have not seen specular maps on our terrains. We don't even have final skies, light balancing, or final light settings for our terrain shaders.
This means that you have seen visuals in varying degrees of finish depending upon how recently we worked on a zone. None of the environments we have shown you are in their full glory. The hard work of the team shows through despite being shy of complete. And that is where we are now. We are polishing, tweaking, and lightmapping like crazy and we will up until the very last stamp for gold. Until then, yes. Some stuff may look flat, or some animations may look jerky. Heck our lead animator and I finally had a moment of joy as one of the last animation system "quirks" that was making the motions look staccato and choppy was finally fixed. Huray!
In terms of visual variety, I believe we have a diverse palette of environments from ancient forests and eldritch swamps to a huge, gothic city floating over a swirling, Chaotic Abyss. With that said, even now we are working on more cool, signiture landmarks for the zones. I believe anyone browsing our material in depth will agree there is a lot there to enjoy.
So by all means continue dialoguing about what you see, let us know what you like and what you don't, and stay tuned for some more finalized shots.
ok enough with the graphic debate already. What I want to know, is how is the stinking Music? is it going to blow me away like AoC's or just be catchy at first like WoW's? Music is very important to me, as it helps tremendously with atmosphere.

EA is being smart by not making too big of a deal out of the graphics engine. Funcom presented AoC as being much more advanced than it actually was, even going so far as to obviously photoshop images to make the graphics look better than they really are, and this probably cost them a large number of customers who believe their system won't run AoC, even if the systems are capable of it.

Funcom presented AoC as being much more advanced than it actually was, even going so far as to obviously photoshop images to make the graphics look better than they really are, and this probably cost them a large number of customers who believe their system won't run AoC, even if the systems are capable of it.
