Question to those with broader experience with the various titles published:
I've been playing EVE for a good while, and like it quite a bit. Unfortunately I've been spoiled by how friendly EVE is for a casual player and how there's no xp/level grinding. I've tried to return playing AO and Lineage 2 as a new gaming experience to find another game to play besides EVE. However, after playing EVE the arficiality of the xp/level grind time sink of both AO and L2 just made me puke after a while. Especially with L2 I was really depressed when I realised how much time I would have to put into the game in killing mobs before I could actually even glimpse any "content", like the sieges.
Are there any other titles out there built in a same skill fashion as EVE and outside the normal xp/level mold of AO and L2?
Comments
UO is skill based not lvl based, though i find some lvl/xp based games fun i spent enough time in AO to get a 200doc 198enf other chars were 30-70ish without ever really getting bored
Well levelling is purely there IMO to stop abusers starting multiple accounts and ripping people off/killing/pillaging etc etc, so I would say its a necassary evil.
Alot of other games have no levelling, RTS's FPS's that sort of thing.
Middle Earth Online will have a real time based skill system like EVE-Online.
The problem with EVE-Online is that they substituted the asteroid mining grind (making money grind) for the leveling grind.
The key to any game is to have enough variety so that player rewards (and the sense of accomplishment) are primarily motivated by in-game goals and not only by leveling and money making goals. In-game goals include taking over land from a rival group, developing that land, repulsing an attack, finding a treasure, finding a hidden enemy base camp, crafting a difficult item of high quality, making personal connections, putting together an alliance, converting a character to your god faction, electing your candidate for high nobility, etc. (did I just describe Dark and Light, yes I surely did)
"A tale in the desert" is without any combat at all but there is some sort of character advancement. Very different from grinding games though.
"Face of mankind" hasnt been published yet but I am to understand that there will be no skills or levels there at all.
'You may want to check these out.
Or just stick with EVE, thats what Ill do
Wish will be skill based and have no leveling, it is said a very new char will be able to play with a high up friend, also I think guild wars is skill based.
That doesnt make very much sense though now does it??? High up character being almost equal to a lower one?? Ummmm wtf lol. Hmm i wonder how that would work beacuse if it is skill based and hes much better in skills he has to be alot stronger O_O???? Oh wait is ''Wish'' the one with fighting-game style combat?? cause if it is then i guess that makes more sense.
If you're into FPS you might want to check out Planetside. It does have a level grind, and it isn't a level grind that you can max out in a month.... BUT:
A rank 3 player could easily go up against a rank 20 player(20 is max battle rank in that game).
The only advantage a level 20 has over a level 3 is that they can have more variety. While a rank 20 player may have the choice of carrying around the best gun and armor in the game, riding the best vehicle, *and* riding the best aircraft, a level 3 player has pretty much one of those choices. They could use their few points they have to get the best gun and armor in the game, the best vehicle, *or* the best aircraft(it's of course arguable which is the "best" though).
In 1vs1 it just comes down to who has the better skill between the 2 players, it doesn't matter thier level. But while a level 3 may be stuck with the best armor and gun in the game, they won't be able to fly an aircraft or ride a vehicle. They'll be stuck with that gun and armor until they level up and gain more points. there is very little difference in level 3 and level 20, just more variety, which I think is great.

I'd say Face of Mankind as well... fps combat, no levels, skills or anything.
But it looks to be going for very story-driven and mission based gameplay, so its not a frag-fest like Planetside.
Shadowbane has very fast leveling
you can get to level 60 in a couple of weeks
I didnt say they would be equal but somehow, I dont really know I am not making the game, If I am a high "level", no other word for it but there are no levels in Wish, character my newbie friend can play with me and not get killed.
