Phenom/Spider Platform Build

MordothMordoth Member UncommonPosts: 65

Just wondering if anyone else has built a Phenom/Spider Platform.

I'm using the Phenom 9600 2.3 Quad-Core, 2 Gig Corsair RAM, 2x ATI Radeon 3870 in Crossfire, ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi, Hiper 780 Watt PSU, Windows XP SP2, Couple Optical Drives, Hard Drives, etc.

I'm not sure that I'm terribly impressed.  Seems like my laptop with an Intel Dual Core 2.5, 3 Gigs of RAM, 8600 GT on Vista SP1 does most tasks better and faster, except the games.

Anyone else have something similar?

    very similar build,
phenom 9500 2.2, 3gb ram, 3870x2. I find it is much better at multitasking then my intel pc, and just a lil better in the gaming department. Planning on getting a 4870 this summer too. hopefully.

That's probably because of the poor performance of the Phenoms.  The most top of the line Phenom is still slower than intel's budget quad core processor the Q6600.  It's sad to say, but AMD building are just a complete waste right now.

Don't get me wrong, it does perform nicely, just not as well as I would have expected.  The point of the build is the Spider Platform, which is a CPU, Mobo Chipset and Graphics card that are all designed to work together.  I'm actually hoping to get the 9850 Phenom soon.

Cough Cough, you only have 2 gigs of ram.  Aim for 4 or even 8 with a new 64-bit OS.  Also crossfire is gimped on Windows XP, its actually detrimental to performance on non-crossfire compliant games.

Core 2 Duo / Quad Core or GTF off the internet please. K Thanks

Seriously though - AMD is slacking majorly in the CPU market these days. You will get better out of the box performance with a Core 2 Duo, not to mention lower temperatures, better overclocking, and extremely stable. All at an excellent consumer friendly price. I know this whole "Spider" thing is supposed to make a difference, but cmon, how much of a difference really. It won't even matter if you get a C2D Processor that is clocked higher than the AMD chip.

    Just my 2 1/2 cents

Totaly agree ... and i use to be a AMD fanboi , and deep down i still am . I even start to think the spider platform is a gimmick  ... but i saw somebody hitting 22000 on 3dmark06 with a phenom 9850 and ... two 3870x2 .

You should atleast be true if your going to slam a processor.  Right now the Phenoms are outperformed by all the Intel Quad Cores, and the Wolfdale Dual Cores.  Except in things that require a larger L2 Cache then whats in the Intel, then Phenom outperforms even the best Intel Quad Core.  They aren't outperformed by all Core 2 Duos.  Also Spider does make a difference just because right now AMD has the best video chipset.
