Is there nothing worth playing anymore?

ErhunErhun Member Posts: 170

I just finished indulging myself in the hell we now call AoC.

I've posted on here a few times trying to find a game worth playing. At least in my idea of it. No one has ever real come to a conclusion for me or put any amazing advice out there. So I'm trying again and maybe for the last time.

I've been playing MMO's since late October of 2003. That's right, FFXI. I'm honestly considering going back to it again, but there just doesn't seem to be enough people. It's to hard to find groups and level.

So now on to what I'm truly looking for.

I want a game that is focused on PvE, but also has PvP in it.

Something that has a good community base and you may not NEED people to play the game with, but you do to some degree.

Something with crafting that is worth it, where crafted items are used and are actually good to use.

Something that takes effort and/or time to play.

Something where guilds can fight each other and/or build a guild city.

And last but not least! Something with a class I enjoy, This being the most important part of this. I need a class that can wear the "Heavy Armor" such as plate mail. Something that can wield a 2 handed sword and can also use a ranged weapon.

That's what I consider important, it would also be nice if there was some type of story to go along with as well.

Thank you for any advice given.

Erhun

EDIT:

Here is a list of games I already own: FFXI, LOTRO, TR (Tabula Rasa), AoC, WoW, Hellgate London.

That is all I could find the boxes for...Here is what I have played other than those: EQ2, Rakion, Runescape, Planetside.

I believe that is all. After seeing my TR box I am considering that and FFXI again, but I would really like to try a game I haven't played before for that thrill of not knowing what to do.

Have you tried LOTRO? It has almost everything you want there.

Only thing is crafting is a bit boring but the items are damn nice.. that and you can only buy a guild house, not build one and guilds don't fight eachother.

It's an easy game to a lot of people but maybe give the trial a try and see... basically everything else is there. Up to you though. good luck on finding a game.

I actually own it and did play myself and with a few friends. As much as I enjoyed it. It just didn't feel quite right. LOTRO does have everything listed basically but I quit that to try AoC. I think I am going to edit this list to what I own and have played.

Fair enough... Can't really think of any others... Vanguard maybe.... I've never played it but it sounds like it has those stuff and I just picked up the collector's edition for $11 so I'll see if it's any good soon enough.

I heard it was good. As you play it could you PM me your experiences on it. I would greatly appreciate it.

I've heard good things about EVE Online, although I haven't tried it out myself.  I believe it's sort of a Sci-Fi, spacefighter thing.

    Playing: Nothing
Played: Champions Online, CoX, STO, PSO, WoW, lots of free-to-play crap
Looking Forward To: DC Universe Online, Blade and Soul

I've heard about EVE that no matter what you do there is no way to surpass the people that have been playing since day one.

Plus I really need a game that I can see my character.

Due to the dearth of captivating MMOs within the past few years, I too have tried EVE recently.  The tantalizing tales of an immensely complex crafting/prospecting/mercantile-based economy drew me in.  However, when I gave the game its well-deserved fair shake I was sorely disappointed.

I'm not quite sure what you're seeking, but, if like me, you are looking for an open-ended (or true sandbox, like me [read: Pre-NGE SWG]), EVE may well prove to be your divining light or your ultimate disappointment.  The catch here is there is nothing at all you can do to advance in any aspect of the game other than wait.  That's right - in lieu of levelling and/or grinding, which I tend to loath to an extent, the only thing one can do to progress in EVE is let real world time elapse.

The economic activity in EVE is truly, nay, epically phenomenal, as is the player versus player content.  But, in order to realize that fact one has to wait months upon months to allow themselves to "level up" or be forced to join a large corporation (seriously, there's nothing you can do to level up other than wait - obviously a shrewd business model, but so not worth if it you actually enjoy the "ding").  And again, I cannot stress this enough to folks considering EVE, there is absolutely nothing you can do to speed the process along - it's simply a waiting game.

What do I mean?  Well, when you start a new toon you have a choice of races and professions.  Standard fodder for any MMORPG.  Once you select your basic skills and head out to test the waters, you do a couple missions.  Suddenly, after a bunch of kills and completed quests, you realize that you haven't progressed in level and you decide to check your skill panel (generically speaking, as per any MMORPG) and notice that you're not lacking XP - you're lacking real world hours!  So you press "Train" or "Learn" (forgot the actual terminology) and just logout for a couple days at first, then a couple weeks, then a couple months.  Supa fun!  That's EVE in a nutshell.

I'm not a fan of space combat, or any type of non-ground based combat, but I could totally see myself playing this game for years had it not been for the lack of risk/reward or time-spent-playing/progression if only because of the truly complex nature of the game and the economy.  For fuck's sake, EVE has a stock market comprised of player based enterprises!!  Such a great economy...that noobs cannot break into.

LotRO is a great game, too.  But, as is the norm these days, it fails in long-term replayability due to linearity...Hit  50 or grandmaster crafter, roll an alt, do the exact same quests again, or in the case of crafting, repeat actions ad nauseum only to hit 50/GM again.  The graphics are sublime, as is the soundtrack (particularly the ambient sounds).  Most of the game is spot-on Tolkien;  any fan of the books will concede that there is no gaming match.  Everyone will certainly appreciate the plush enironments, and will play this game for hours on end if only to try to relive the epic feel of the books.  That time is better spent re-reading the books to be honest.

What did Blizzard do right?  Wow...Where to begin (pun intended)?  WoW is graphically unique, and certainly fun.  WoW introduced masses of folk to the mainstream themes of MMORPGing.  But how many persons in this diverse demopraph  know two shits about the history of Warcraft, RPGing (Role Play Gaming),  or, and most importantly, MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online [gaming]) in general?

Why did the 12 year-old girl in Singapore or the 73 year-old grandfather of three in Portland all of the sudden care about gaming on the "email machine"?  I couldn't tell you.  But I suspect it has more to do with great marketing, viral campaigning, and customer support rather than great gameplay, knowledge, and complexity.

AoC - No comment.  I haven't played it yet.

I'm certainly not trying to berate WoW, Eve, LotRO or any other game currently running They're all great games.  But my suggestion is: Wait till SOE gives us classic servers.

  • ErhunErhun Member Posts: 170

I've been seeing a lot about these classic servers.

One of the biggest regrets I have was not playing SWG before that big crap it took.

If these classic servers come out will there be a server for SWG that is pre the crap?

Sure their are plenty of "Good" MMO's to play its just that many people have either (A) unrelistic expectations like MMO's should be released totally finished and bug free, and if there is any hiccups the first week of launch the entire Dev team should be marched in front of a firing squad and shot. Because of course the Games are more important then anything! (players tend to lose prospective)

Then theres (B) People who remember games with rose colored lenses. Oh yes the great days of sitting around looking at a book graphic waiting for mana to regen while also waiting for respawn in the spot you been camping the same mob in for the last 3 hours.

Ok theres no real accounting for taste, and their is surely no going back. Your first love will always be that  and nothing will ever really match it even if its hundred times better. Sometimes the genre moves forward and sometimes its players don't. Its ok for people to have different tastes in games really it is. If you can't find anything you enjoy move on. Maybe movies, sports or tv are more your thing.

I don't think people are pissed that games have glitches when they are released. Everyone expects that. I believe it's more of. They aren't fixing it/taking to long to fix things that shouldn't take so long.

I don't want to get into this I just want some games that I might enjoy with what I have stated.

Why don't you try a niche game like DDO (twitch combat, detailed quests, group based) or CoH (great character looks, fast colourful combat, craft your own base).

You listed that you've played EQII before!?  Do you recall your account info?  SOE just gave veteran players a free 60 days with all expansions unlocked last week!  I started it again being its been since a few months after launch when I last played cause of WoW pulling me away!

Damn good game now...so much better than I remember....if you're looking for some extremely deep content its here!  EQII also adopted the easy-mode that WoW did last fall though, but thats not all bad......at least now you don't have to worry about content in the over-world being too difficult or trying to find a group.  It's all solo-able to lvl 80, course there is still group and raid content, and some classes might still have a challenge against some of the harder mobs.

I'm just having fun checking out the new areas especially Timorous Deep for the Sarnak starting area...thats really well done and much fun.  Also playing a DE in the Neriak starting zone.

Might wanna see if you have free time also and come check it out again.  Should hold me over for the free months and it'll be closer to WAR once over!  hehe

okay winter let me put it to you this way. Most technology based items tend to at least metamorphasize into better products as time goes on. I mean really look at mmos right now after 10 years of existance. A full DECADE, and the genre has hardly moved forward at all. Thats a terrible thing to watch a genre that I love so much fall into such mediocry and apathy.

Well, you're preaty much fckd'. There is no other MMO other then what you've listed above worth paying for. If you don't enjoy them, that means your burned out and need a break. Try some single player games. I preaty much left MMO gaming after canceling my WoW sub (since WoW is the best MMO and like I've said - I already cancelled it.)

And if youre looking for a good single player RPG I would suggest Fable: the lost chapters for the PC (or X Box if you have it) or if you're into oldschool then Baldur's Gate 2 or Planescape: Torment.

    Hope I could help!

I've played just about all the same game you have, except AoC because I'm waiting til the game gets some time to work out the bugs. Anyway, I have to say that after playing FFXI and WoW I am fiending for an MMO that presents group based leveling (I loved FFXI's party system) and serious end-game raiding ( I would say WoW has the most interesting and fun raiding system I've seen). And since I'm sick of WoW, I am really considering getting back into FFXI too. We should start new characters together!

i can  expand on  your pretty accurate  eve expirence from a certain point  of view.

i have been playing eve since SWG took a header and yeah its brutal in places but thats the risk/reward thing in place giving you a meaningfull expirence.

yes your skills train in real time but this has some killer advantages like your skilling while you sleep and work and the month long level 5 skills can be trained while the accounts turned off for a month while you go get your heart broke  trying  a crap mmo you had hopes for..lol.

im doing that atm  with AoC...   and none to thrilled that i spent 50 bucks on it atm.

your in game time is spent aquiring money to buy ships, parts, skills....skills to use new ships/parts etc.

you can carebear it and stay in the safe space called empire and grind your brains out killing npcs missioning or otherwise or craft or mine  as well.

eve has the best crafting i have seen and only the second total living economy like SWG once had.

the real money and fun is out in  non secure space which is pvp area and has the huge risk/reward. dont bother to go there untill you find a corperation/alliance that owns some no sec space or a good merc/pirate corp that just goes out there to make hell on players for money.

downside there is that the old players do own all the deepspace and you cant really accomplish much solo but the upside is that its all up for grabs and  the borders are allways moving  and YOU can impact that. you meet great ppl in corps that you partner up with to accomplish anything youy want to do as long as your corp can survive and hold some space so most corps core worlds are safe for carebearing if you like.

as for not having a actuall avatar  yeah thats takes some getting use to but this game is 5 years old and they never plan on shuting it off or letting it get outdated so they keep beefing it up like last years new graphics package which is optional  in settings so you can run a old crap machine  in eve still if need be. and the next  major upgrade comeing 08/09 ish is adding avatars  walking inside ships/stations etc. not sure what they can really do  yet...  just saw some development stills  so far myself.

what i can tell you about the fun  in eve though is your work becomes rewarding when you get your 1st fancy ride you worked for  like a mile long golden laser spewwing battleship or when you see a hostile player pop into the local system and the heart starts  pumping . yeah you can hear it pound up in your neck if you were not paying attention or went afk without cloaking and your getting your hull torn off by some guy lol.   and then theres your 1st fleet action where you work as a team sealing up a system to keep out or kill off the baddys who wanna do you and yours up. or your 1st capitol action  supporting  those crusty old veterans flying capitol ships attacking and taking enemy stations and systems . i havent seen a titan yet "the eve deathstar" but you can train to fly a frigging deathstar in eve.  good luck finding player useable deathstars in wow lol.

i logged in here to find a new mmo myself cause i miss what i got in SWG back in the pre NGE days so im not saying eve is all that  etc ... but im not much of a fantasy player and like a sandbox with a player made living economy that dont use a leveling system and lets you craft your profession instead of being stuck in one. yeah im asking alot i guess..   and i just looked up and realised im aufully long winded.  :P

i wish you all luck finding the next good game..i havent  so ill tinker around in eve some more  for lack of better..

keeping hopes up for CCP/Whitewolfs vampire/world of darkness mmo in the making or the rummored SW/kotor mmo from bioware.

im talking to the wind cause anyone reading this must have fallen asleep reading this  book  lol
