So, after pestering you guys with questions, and receiving your answers, I realised I lack the knowledge to buy the computer parts to make a decent computer.
I may buy one of these two (second hand through our equivalent of ebay - dodgy i know, but I have done well through I so far - and I can go and test).
My first option (sorry about the caps - I copied and pasted):
SCREEN: CMV-221D 22" 5MS DVI LCD WIDESCREEN 1680X1050 RES
CPU: AMD 64 X2 3800+ @2.4 GHZ
CPU COOLER: GIGA-BYTE G-POWER PRO VARIABLE SPEED (FOR SAFER HIGHER OVERCLOCKS)
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-570SLI-S4 REV.2
GRAPHICS: PALIT 8800GT 512MB DDR3 256BIT 650MHZ (C) 1750MHZ(S) 2000MHZ (M)
RAM: 2GB DD2 800MHZ 2X 1GB STICKS IN DUAL CHANNEL
HARD DRIVE: SEAGATE 160GB SATA2
CASE: BLACK MID TOWER WITH SIDE WINDOW FRONTAND REAR 120MM FAN CAN PUT 3X 80MM FANS ON SIDE
PSU: THERMALTAKE 430W
DVD WRITER: ASUS DRW-1814BLT IDE DVD WRITER 18X SINGLE LAYER, 8X DUAL LAYER WRITING SPEED
LOGITECH MEDIA PRO KEYBOARD & LOGITECH MX440 LASER MOUSE
OS: WINDOWS XP PRO SP2 FULLY INSTALLED AND UPDATED
OTHER SOFTWARE: MS OFFICE 2007 PRO, TUNEUP UTILLITES 08, NERO 8 AND DIVX PRO VER.7
This is my preferable option. It is quite a cheap, budget computer. How would it run AOC (the game we are currently playing)? I figure quite well.
I thought I could easily replace the sub standard cpu in the future, but that cpu wouldn't inhibit my enjoyment of AOC right now would it?
I couldn't find any information on: GIGABYTE GA-570SLI-S4 REV.2
closest I could find was: GA-M750SLI-DS4 (rev. 1.0)
Do you think the mobo will be ok?
The other option, a bit cheaper:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 775 LGA 1.86Ghz ASUTek P5K SE Motherboard DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory at 3G Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS mouse & wireless keyboard included |
How is this as a budget computer?
Again, will it run AOC fine?
I believe I will need to update the cpu, but is the motherboard fine for that?
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I know I dither backwards and forwards, but your help is really appreciated!
Cheers,
BoBo

They both are good bases for the price. As you stated both will need a few parts upgraded down the road. They both should be able to work on Age of Conan well as they are. So as long as they aren't trying to scam you either is a good choice. The processor can be upgraded later as most games right now are taxing on the video card more then the processor.
Both boards are modern which opens up its upgrading future to probably the next 3 years. Here are upgrades on each board as they stand right now. I color coordinated it based on priority. Red(High)--->Blue(Low)
1st Computer
2nd Computer
for gaming the second option is much, much better.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Colour coding! Very useful, thank you Cleffy.
Why is the 2nd comps vid card inferior to the first? Or is it just how you have set up priorities,
Cheers Cleff

I actually thought the first one was, but obviously that's why I am here.
Could you please tell me why the second one is better (it's cheaper, which is good )?
Are you saying, that as they stand, the second one will run games better now, or that motherboard has better upgrade potential down the road?
Thank you n25philly
A core 2 duo will kill any AMD processor in the x2 line without breaking a sweat. Everything else is fairly even. Can't tell on the video card for sure. The 8800GT on the first computer is better than the 320mb and 640mb 8800gts, but the 512mb gts is more powerful than the 8800gt. Even still, the second will be very close even with the lower video cards and will offer much better upgrade options.

Actually the first one has the better upgrade future. AM2+ is gonna last through 2010. That 775 board has its best processors out today. Nehalhiem is gonna make use of a 1600 Mhz FSB. Also Intel boards architecture is changing. However, the processor on the first one isn't as good, but is good enough. The rest of the components is what really makes the system work better.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh! conflicting info making my brain bleed.... ;p
OK, I can follow what you are saying Cleffy, and the small boy who like his toys is really eyeing up that 22" wide
I might try to grab that, especially as the seller has been quite on to it compared to the other... have to wait until Sunday for the auction to run its course...
Thanks Cleffy + Thanks Philly; you guys rock

AMD will multi task better but intel will run a single program better. Personaly go for AMD right now your just paying for the intel imho. Take this into account in 3 years almost all parts out will need to be replaced becuase of IP verison 6.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms
