Looking for an MMO that allows a better character customization

twinsidedtwinsided Member Posts: 1

Hi there. I am looking for a game, that really lets me make a character to my desired choices, but still gives me a part to actually play in end  game content. I will go over what I have played already so I can make a point that is easier to grasp.

Like a good majority of mmo players, I play WoW. And it was fun while I was leveling up, there was no required spec. I rolled a warlock and I had a lot of fun. Yes there were things missing to the classes, but generally it was my character. But I hit max level, and I find that I have to spec a certain way generally for people to want me around. I can understand the need for the gear. But the way the talents worked out I was no longer able to play my character, and even if I got to go with my favored spec, it isn't utilized the way I think it should have been.

Now I am fully aware that bosses will have different resistances. And that is fine. It is those walls that make the game a challenge in the first place. But when your an affliction warlock and the spell you use most is shadow bolt because that is your primary rate of DPS, that gets old. If I wanted something more like that I would go destruction or rolled a mage. I like the shadowbolt spell. I like using it. But essentially it gets really old spamming it every fight, not just boss fights, but generally every fight. Sure I may use drain life slightly, and drain soul even less then that when shards are low, but generally my rotation goes dot dot dot shadow bolt shadow bolt shadowbolt dot dot repeat. That gets old.

I would not mind demonolgy if not for the simple fact that pets do not scale. The spec is really a nice spec, but the demons you summon, pretty much the whole reason for the spec, is useless with the exception of some slight buffs or abilities you might get. I mean come on. The felgaurd has less health then the lock, that is some kind of retarded right there.

My point. I don't want an MMO where I have to spec a way that I either find useless to what its meant for, or that keeps me from speccing how I want. The whole point to the MMORPG is it is a way to quest with friends and new people, and the character is supposed to be yours. It is hardly your own character if your guild makes you spec that way, or if you use a tool box build.

I want a new MMO simply because WoW doesn't really live up to my standards of what it should be, but I either read in other forums the others are just like it, or no one says anything at all. And ones I want to try do not offer a free trial and I really don't want to buy a game to find I don't like it.

Any thoughts?

If you've already found some games you want to try, it sounds like you have unknowingly solved your own problem for the time being. I'd suggest finding a bargain on the games you want to try and giving it the full 30 days you get when buying it.

MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW

    Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

I skimmed over your post rather hurriedly because I already had an answer in mind when I saw the title to this thread.

Try City of Heros / Villains.  Seriously, while not everyone will like the actual GAME, its MORE than worth a download and 14 days free JUST to use the character creator.  I kid you not when I say I'd gladly pay the monthly cost at least once a year JUST to make toons on that game.  The creator is a game in and unto itself.

Now, as for the actual GAME, I happen to like it.  I do not mind the mission farming (don't ask, if you even try to play the game you'll understand this one soon enough) and rather like the set up of the game.  I do think they could have done a ton better...and I look forward to Champions online to see just how much they've grown as an MMO developer.  One thing is for sure, once you taste travel powers in this game (and you get them as early as level 14) every other MMO will feel like sloshing through mud.

    EDIT:

I noticed you spoke quite a bit about pets...Villain side has an Archetype called "Mastermind" which is essentially the last pet class you will ever want to play.  By the time you are done, that class will have you in total control of 6 minions, each of which are capable of killing something their level alone.  Taste that for a moment if you like pets enough.  I especially enjoy doing mayhem missions (big, city sized instances where you rob a bank that are full of destroyable things.  Like cars, phones, booths, trucks, boxes, trash cans, light poles, meters, ect...) and watching my screen light up in a flurry of laser fire and exploding cars and enemies being sent sailing through the air by repulsion from laser fire.

CoH is good if you want total control over what your character looks like. Archetype powers and enhancements are quite limited, so I doubt they would meet your requirements.

For flexibility in character design try DDO, not only have you got race, class, stats, skills, feats and enhancements to play with, if that isn't complex enough you can multi-class up to 3 classes. Pop on top twitch combat and you won't find yourself spamming the same routine of buttons in the toolbar. In fact my Ranger has 9 toolbars showing and all 90 slots are needed. Magic users struggle to get everything they need in the maximum 120 slots.

Here is the link to the Wizard's spellbook just to give you an idea of what they get to play with.

There is also EVE if you want to go stat mad.
