This game has become an MMO version of 'Jedi Power Battles' (old PS1 game that sucked IMO).
If you like being Jedi, and being surrounded by Jedi (and don't mind huge tears in the fabric of continuity) then you won't mind it so much. I for one, as a huge SW fan, found it sickening.

It's interesting that the heroic instances seem to have been specifically designed so that a group of all Jedi will get wiped if they try them.

The instances demand that there is a variety of professions in the group, although some of instances deliberately ignore the abilities of some professions.  I'm thinking the unsnarable/unmezzable NPCs of the Exar Kun instance, which means that smugglers need not apply.  Futhermore, the prolonged combat that ensues against the gold elites means that a spy gets one chance to use their best attacks and then they are reduced to pathetic Jedi with inferior DPS without the ability to tank.

I pretty much deliberately opted out of some instance groups or offered to, because having another light Jedi along was pointless.  Having one or two to tank is one thing, but beyond that, you're taking up a group slot that could be more profitably filled by a commando or bounty hunter for DPS, or a medic for healing, or an officer for group buffs.

Taking all of one profession into any instance is a setup for failure, it's not a discrimination against Jedi ;)  Also, there's a number of NPC's in the Exar Kun instance that can be snared/rooted - snaring/rooting them is a common tactic my group uses on them.

The executioner cannot be snared or mezzed, and he's probably the most important target at that point in the instance...more important than the boss, I dare say, because if you let him get to his goal, it's a guaranteed wipe.

No, you can't snare/root him but if your group is working together and ALL switch their target to him, he will die long before he gets anywhere near his target.  Everything else during that phase can all be snared/rooted.

You do have a few chances of missing the Executioner though - if he gets through once it doesn't have to be a fail.

Which proves my point.  That the skills that a smuggler is expected to bring to a group (snare/root/mesmerize) are rendered useless by the design of the instance.

I'm well aware that when the executioner is activated EVERYEONE chases after him and pounds on him.

But my point is that is the only option at that point.  The executioner cannot be snared, rooted, or othewise stopped from moving except by killing him.

Therefore a smuggler adds nothing but mediocre DPS to an EK group at its most critical point.  My experience is if you can get past that phase of the instance the first time, you've got a good shot at bringing Exar Kun down at the end.  If not, you're going to run out of time because the rest of it is pound on a rock until it breaks.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Yeah, everyone is a jedi now.  It should be called Star Wars the Galaxy of Jedi.  I can't believe they didn't see that one coming when they decided to make the worst move in MMORPG history.

I was in the instance last night and the new smuggler skill "pistol whip" DOES in fact root the executioner for a full 4 seconds. Now the attack like all attacks has a chance of missing on a bad roll but it does in fact work very well.

Is that what players are calling it when lag causes specials not to fire?

Yes, special attacks not firing and massive lag are definitely more Star Warsy and Iconic.
