Unfortunatly from talking to the devs they only give us the "When we are ready" answer.

I see. Too bad. I wish they could give us some indication even if it is over-conservative. Within the year?

Well they are still aiming for last 1/4 or this year for release. As far as I can tell from what they are saying they are introducing a novel way of starting beta. Instead of opening beta to iron out thousands of bugs and ideas they are actually finishing the game so it all works and all the systems are complete. Once the game is finished they are introducing closed beta to test balance and test for any bugs they have missed.

It looks like ND are trying to get the game working 99.9% before they actually let anyone outside the devs and a very small friends and family come into beta. The quote was "We dont see the point of letting people in beta if things are not pretty much finished because they get bored testing and reporting basic problems and give up."

If this is true then I would imagine ND will have a small closed beta lead in to open beta and then release. Of course thats all QED.  If I was to guess and its purely a guess , I would say closed beta might be around September and open beta end of November realease in Jan , Feb due to unforseen problems ect ect.

    Pure guesswork that .

Sounds like good guesswork to me. I think I understand where they are coming from with their beta plans. Too many players treating beta like a preview and for e-peen ammo ("I've been on since beta, you release-date n00b!" )  than actually helping to iron out the kinks.
