If you really like unchecked always watch your back PvP then Shadowbane is your game.
But, I wouldn't necessarily call the people that say that the game sucks idiots .. The game isn't that great for anything but PvP really. When I played Seiges were laggy , things were bugged, and more then likely you would crash in the middle of doing the simplest of tasks. Though it may be alot different now.
you might wanna try DOMINOES its a really fun game. But you need to rely on other players for the amount of enjoyment u'll get it from it. It doesnt need a CC and its very cheap.
I heard CoH is really a blast when you start. Character creation is second to none. But within a few weeks, the players become really bored because there isn't any content in the game. You just kill the same villians over and over.
Just started playing AO last week and have really enjoyed it so far and am probably going to play it until the next generation gamers are realeased later this year. With the addition of Shadowlands expansion, AO is really 2 games in one. I've never played in the Rubi-Ka portion of the game. But Shadowlands has been a lot of fun. It is more a Sci-Fi/Fantasy mix. Where Rubi-Ka is more Sci-Fi. I've also heard a lot of good things about the PvP but I haven't played long enough to try it. One more thing, AO is coming out with another expansion at the beginning of September Alien Invasion that I'm sure you can read up on. I wouldn't say the graphics are the best, especially character models, but for me, that hasn't effected my fun. The game is complex so expect awhile to learn all the features. Plus the game has unpaid advisors that are there for people who ask questions. When I was having trouble, I posted a message on the newbie chat channel and an advisor was where I was in seconds helping me learn the game. Hope this helps. I've only been playing AO for a week.
Can't tell you anything about SWG. I had too much problem getting the game to play right.

Bigpeeler...AO is a pretty decent mmorpg...its an oldie but goodie. If you get hooked up into a "guild" many will give you a ton of money. Also, the immersion is pretty deep there...hell, they even have movies on their official website as well as a 8,000 year timeline describing everything.
I was an A.R.K for them.....customer service is top notch (don't be surprised if an A.R.K. asks for a moment of your time and then starts to ask if you think they're doing a good job).
It's def. worth a look at.
However, if its Hard core, unadulturated PvP you're looking for (with a good PvP) system try EVE. Hell that game is intense with PvP. Simply choose the life of a Pirate. There are no "classes" in the game...your selection of skills determine what you are good at ...and there are hundreds of skills and you can train in all of them if you wish. And despite what others tell you about how everyone learns the same and the same speed that's not true. There's a mathematical science when it comes to what to learn first in EVE to make everything else go smoother...again it all depends on your ambitions.
There are several Pirate Guilds in EVE...and some are so good that their names are actually mentioned in the game now by Agents....which hardly ever happens in a mmorpg. There's at least 5 good Pirate Corps out there..you have to prove yourself first. LOL, my wife was invited in one Corp (M0o) but she turned it down as the membership fee was almost a million isk. But if you become a pirate, you'll be very rich and very much hunted lol.
Also in EVE, there are so many systems out there that if you were to set your ship in one direction and go from one end of the galaxy to the other (without using jumpgates or warp) it would literally take you 88 real life years to do it. That's how big it is.
Also, EVE is growing. They're server population has doubled in the year they have been around.
So I would choose one of those two. Besides EVE has a 14 day free trial without a cc needed. The offer ends in 3 days. Try it..you have nothing to loose.
Also if you do download EVE, message Kareal in game (my wife) she'll hook you up with enough money for a better ship and give you the run down on how things work.

Here is a (partial) recent player review taken from aovault.ign.com:
"I played AC and AC2 for about 2 years and got bored with them. Everything else out there just didn't appeal to me as I read up on them. Then I started researching AO, and the premise/setup/character progression sounded intriguing. I downloaded the trial in December and signed on for good in early January. I have about 4 weeks of experience with 5 different character classes (levels 5, 12, 15, 30, and 41). While I have barely scratched the surface of what this game has to offer, I think I can give a pretty clear picture of what it's like from a newbie perpective.
GRAPHICS - For a game that is over 2 years old, I am extremely impressed with the graphic detail. While not top notch, it's much better than comparable games of that age. I do occassionally see some clipping and the annoying "shot across the bow" (my ranged weapons seem to be shooting from somewhere well behind me), but nothing that gets too annoying. Camera control is my only real gripe in this area. I use 3rd person lock, but have to reset it every time I enter a new zone. I like my view back a little from the character, and it always goes right up to the character at every zone...very annoying.
GUI/INTERFACE - You can use the old setup or the Shadowlands setup. I used the old one for the first few weeks and then switched. Bottom line, both are difficult to get used to, but once you do they work fine. For the most part they are quite customizable, but I would like to see more capabilities to move things like the local map, wear menu, and chat window.
COMBAT - Combat is pretty straight forward. You target the critter and hit attack. You will auto attack and then have the ability to use special attacks, healing items, healing and other nanos. If you have a pet class, it becomes a little more involved as you will be controlling the pet, too. Overall, nothing ground breaking, but not as boring as say whacking 3684 monkeys in the BSD on AC1.
CHARACTER SKILLS/ABILITIES - Very indepth and extremely varied from class to class. This is what drew me to AO in the first place. I love being able to dink around with skills, deciding which I should raise and by how much. Reset points allow you to slowing "ungimp" a character, too. I haven't used many skills, but so far I only see swimming and water vehicle skills as worthless.
CRAFTING/TRADESKILLS - This is very complex and something you will spend a lot of time learning if that's the route you want to take. It took me nearly 30 minutes just to make one shotgun (buy the book, find and buy the components within the proper QL range, buff my trader, combine the parts in order). That being said, it is enjoyable. I have more fun with my trader than my other classes. I only wish more XP would be granted in crafting."

Okay well i've narrowed my search for a new MMORPG down to 3 games...
the choices are...
- CoH...
- AO...
- SWG...
as you can see all of these games are based in a present day or futuristic setting... i think im finally tired of traditional midevil MMO's...
anyways i have untill Friday to choose a new game (pay day )...
so ya... just vote on whichever game you think i should play...
no matter where u come from... no matter where u are now... no matter where ur going... its all about the EXP

SWG is a shame for the SW license.
CoH is fun the first days, but youll find yourself doing the same damn thing. CoH lacks of content.
Try AO
Anarchy Online is your best option. SWG = Everquest sci-fi
CoH= cool for casual gamers, boredom for the hardcore
