Go play DAoC and go find out why its such a great innovation and idea that the game has.

Unlike some games who claim to have "pvp" with a reason.. DaoC gives you one and Darkness Falls is one of them.

okay i kinda of lied about not playing daoc... like I have.. its just pvp didn't start of the bat... so I was like screw it wait for warhammer :(..

I just want the quick way of what darkness falls is..

Been a very long time since I played DAoC, but Darkness Falls was a dungeon that was only accessible to whatever realm was winning in PvP, can't remember what exactly what was required to have it.

Your realm needed to have control of the most keeps/towers in order to open up Darkness Falls. There were tons of mobs in there, it was open world not instanced like WoW (maybe bosses were, I wasn't max level when I went in hehe) but it was really fun and great exp. Basically a great PvE reward gained through PvP combat, so it's kind of a predecessor to WAR's concept.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

I loved Darkness Falls... It's a dungeon in which all 3 realms have access to, but every entrance leads to a central meeting point where members of all 3 realms come to. However, you can only go so far into the other realm's tunnel until you're unable to jump the cliff.

If I could change 1 thing about how DAoC's RvR worked, i would have made players allowed to inhabit opposing realms (allowing access to them in different ways). The game died once the whole "quick travel" thing went into effect. The days of running the battlefield to get to the other side were amazing.

Love the sinner, hate the sin.

OH... smack me for not relay9ing intel. Hell adam told me LAST year they are planning an rvr dungeon like darkness falls.  oh and for all the pve hogs, you will gain access to an additional dungeon once you raise the enemy city... just to make you guys come along for the violence

    50. No RvR dungeon at launch (a la DAoC), but they’re talking about it a lot.

Why not?  DF was a great pvp experience .

Actually, Darkness Falls originally was a old game for Mythic, back when they were known as Mythic Realms (http://www.mythic-realms.com/).

And for a history lesson.  Darkness Falls was not avaiable during the launch.  It was added in a few months later.

If you have not played DAOC I reccomend picking it up and playing through it for a few months. Then you'll see what this is all about.

I loved "Darkness Falls". You would be fighting it out on the frontier areas and suddenly see that you got DF control....then everyone would rush to it!

For those that didn't play, Darkness Falls was a huge portal-accessible dungeon area with "starter locations" for all 3 realms, however, it was only open to whichever realm controlled it (ie. was "winning" the RvR front by controlling the most points). So once it opened to your realm, your side could go rushing in....and better yet.... whoever was in there from the other 2 realms, was trapped inside (they could exit, but not get back in). This lead for some great RvR battles within the dungeon itself. On the other hand, it also meant that you had to really watch your back while fighting PvE mobs because an attack from another realm player could come from anywhere!

Also, the mobs in the dungeon dropped "currency" that could only be used for vendors in the dungeon to buy special Darkness Falls items.

experiance gain was also higher in DF.

One minor correction -- you ALWAYS had to watch your back.  Stalkers/Scouts/Rogues (the stealthy backstabbing types of each realm) would typically log off in DF after their session and log back into it as well.  They'd have a field day picking people off. ( ' :

The way I looked at it was that you could make tons of cash in DF, so getting ganked was a risk worth taking.

Darkness Falls was a brilliant addition. Not only because of the merits of the dungeon (increased experience for PVE, system or turning in "tokens" for quality items, etc), but because it gave RvR significant meaning for capturing keeps (the bonuses originally provided weren't as important to most people).

As other posters have mentioned, the real fun was when one group took control of the dungeon - it would be a mass entrance of people from another realm marauding through and slaughtering the other side.

The beauty of Darkness Falls was one realm would own it, and everyone from the owning realm would spend their time there while the other two realms were busy trying to take the keeps to unlock it for their realm.  One would succeed and then everyone in the realm stopped PvPing and would run to Darkness Falls.  Enter in mass and sweep through it and spend their time in it.  Meanwhile the other realms would organize and try to take it back.   . . . and the cycle would just continue.  Great fun!

Darkness Falls was one of the things in DAoC that made PVP relevant to the PVE part of the game.  As others have said, only one realm has the ability to enter it depending on the amount of keeps you control.  When DF changed hands the realm that acquired it would run in there and sweep it for enemies to make sure the rest of the friendlies would have a less hazardous time in it, however the stealthers would log off in there and come back and cause havoc and mayhem.  It was great fun.  People used the Seals (DF currency) as yet another staple of the trading between people because crafters in DAoC could salvage dropped items for parts and materials.  At the time the DF items granted the most salvage for the price and people would buy the seals from you if you had extras.  Others would just farm them and sell them so that they can get the gold to buy other interesting items.

Basically, DF gave you a reason to pvp.  If you had an alt you were leveling, DF was a good place as long as you were level 20 or above given that your realm controlled enough keeps to grant you access.  If you didn't have access, you'd get on your main and go and fight to get it back which would lead to even more fun.  The deeper you go in DF the harder the mobs become until you go beyond a point where you need a group of people to hunt.  You can go even deeper and fight the Legion, a group of raid bosses that needed large numbers (40 or more) in the beginning to overcome.  The Legion would of course drop interesting loot, not only good due to the bonuses but also some of the looks of the weapons were quite nice.  They had interesting effects on them that would make you stand out from the rest of the people with just a simple visual cue.  I remember I had a Rapier that had an effect of Ice falling from it and it looked like it was snowing.  At the time I had a person offer me 4 Platinum (4000 gold) to buy it from me but I didn't have a backup weapon so I kept it.  At the time there were only 2 of us who had it.  Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Anyways, enough reminiscing.  DF was a good thing, and if they bring it back in WAR or something like it I think the game will be better off then without it.  I really hope that the devs have some ace up their sleeve that they will not talk about and then just bust it out on the population to tinker with.  I can only hope it's innovative as was DF.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
