you arent supposed to double post for 1 thing, use the freakin edit button.
all anyone had to tell you to do was either use the cd that came with the mobo or go to the site for the mobo, how videocards came into play is beyond me...and linux??wtf would booting into linux fix?!
it sounds like you removed the drivers for the mobo instead of removing the ones from the other video card. so putting them back will fix it.
nobody cares about your psu (only morons include that on their stat sheets anyways). need to know the MAKER AND MODEL NUMBER on your motherboard. the rest is pretty much irrelevant.
lastly (though sadly i thought for sure this would be sorted out when i first looked at it hours ago) you could have already installed xp several times in the amount of time this thread has been up, and it will probably be the ultimate outcome anyways. watch it be something retarded like a head set plugged in.
Ya downloading that didnt do anything where can I find the link for the drivers for the mobo? Because I downloaded the latest drivers from that website and I stil got nothing

doesn't the Wxp update through MS in the custom option list the software and hardware drivers one needs to install?
To find details about your system in Wxp, try Start then Run then type in dxdiag that brings up the DirectX Diagnostic Tool... top of that popup far right tab (More Help) try the MSInfo button That brings up System Information with all kinds of detail information about one's system like motherboard, cpu, BIOS version, installed memory
ps did you maybe pull the sound plug out of the back of your tower computer or pull the sound plug from your monitor, hence no sound,,, can you plug in earphones into the sound out of the computer and hear startup sounds when you reboot? Do you have another monitor with speakers you can connect to see if sound from it? Did you plug the sound pin into the wrong place on the back of your computer (maybe into the microphone hole?)
Does the computer make no noise whatsoever at startup, think some computers have a lil speaker inside that beeps in startup.
... right mouse click My Computer (should be on desktop, [recall when one left mouse click My Computer you access your hard drives]) then Properties (brings up System properties) Hardware tab then device manager brings up Device Manager showing any problems with your hardware at a glance.
All this presumes you are in Administrator mode and not a Guest account in Wxp.
It sounds like the problem is an incompatibility. ATI HD video cards have a sound controller on them to allow HD Sound Playback on Vista. Even though you are using Windows XP, it appears the video card is trying to control the sound. Notice how the Sound Card says its manufacturer is ATI. Also it could be an incompatibility with the nForce North Bridge.
I suggest taking out the video card, and try running the machine with onboard video if you can. If you can't use your old video card in Standard VGA mode. Re-install the sound drivers, then install your new video card.
im pretty sure he DID remove the mobo drivers because they said nvidia on them (thinking it was video related). even if the hd sound is on the card (my board has hd sound on it anyways, infact it seems silly unless its a cap card) couldnt he just use the device manager and kill the ati sound driver and use the default nvidia/realtek one? its hurting my head to think why the hell ati would put the sound on a video card. i could see it on a pcie1 slot, but part of the card itself? i dont even see that info listed anywhere! it would seem about as brilliant as putting a nic in there for haha's.
call compaq and ask them (i would yell at them personally under the premise that their machine is complicating your life in unneccisary ways), or hp since they seem to share web space. you can easily get the drivers for the whole machine through the company (saw them on the way to those ones). OR contact ati.
that is all i can find on it (and neither really looks promising but A chance is better than NO chance).
personally i would start backing things up (like yesterday morning) and start with a clean slate. i dont know how many things you have tried but i bet your machine is starting to get a bit confused about wtf the audio is doing.

I had a similar problem with my pc after installing a HD3870. I was not using the HD audio and it was installed and enabled under the hardware section like yours. I would try disabling the HD audio in there, reboot and see if that works.
Unless your using the HD audio for something then that could be the conflict.

also, there might be a newer version of the ac97 drivers. IF those ones i linked dont work try those.

There is an issue with the 4850 and HD audio. ATI/AMD just released a set of drivers to fix that with a hotfix.
