As much as a huge funcom fanboi I am, as much as I anticipated Age of Conan to be THE game for me... it in no way will ever come close to beating the subscription/sales numbers in WoW. However, I am a firm believer that just because something has more sold or more people going to it, doesn't mean that it's better by any means. I friggin hate McDonalds with a passion, food is cheap and bad for you... but throw me a Quiznos subs that give you these massively delicious piles of food and is relatively healthy for you (but not nearly as many customers as McDonalds) and I will be a happy tubby man.
The simple fact is this, up until WoW not many cared about subscription numbers. Gamers went to games that appealed to them the most rather than flocking like drones and staying just because , " well dude, all my friends play here and it has the most subscribers and I cant afford to think for myself ". If you play World of Warcraft because you ENJOY it as a game for your OWN personal needs, then fine enjoy. If you buy MMOs based on which has more subscriptions then I am sorry for you.
Age of Conan put an incredibly tiny hail dent in WoWs hummer. I think Warhammer will put a huge dent in the frame but the only thing that can beat wow ( IN SUBSCRIPTION NUMBERS, NOT GAME QUALITY) is another Blizzard product. I suspect Warhammer to get around 3 million active users ( around 1-1.5 mill in the US).
How about Guild Wars 2? The first one totally rocked but started to suck on later... lot of people are anticipating gw2... (as i am)
And if they ever made A diablo MMORPG.. its for sure to be big, theres not a single doubt... i just cant believe noone has made it yet....id say like 90% of the gamers that have been around a while has played diablo and loved it... some have now gone into different genres like fps and RTS but they still remember diablo as being a great rpg game and wouldnt hesitate to try the mmorpg... everyone does. If they make it, they better make it good because its gonna be really HYPED before its released and if its dissapointing .. then... ugh.
Originally posted by Ithuriel but until they get commercials with William Shatner on to primetime television, they will never stop the beast that is WoW.
Not to mention dedicate an ENTIRE episode on Southpark, and a similar parallel that was made on The Simpsons. I don't remember the same happening to some of the older more established games... even the once touted "Ever CRACK"

Mainly because EverQuest didn't appeal to the mindless masses and the "hold my hand pls" generation of MMORPG gamers today. They really didn't care about "whats cool" and "what everyone wants". They designed a difficult and adventurous game that many couldn't handle. Games like EQ back in the day weren't the norm of gaming like WoW is today so having around 300k subscribers within a year after launch was a massive success for a young market. Heck a good 3/4th the designers who designed wow came from EQ. Most of the games ideals came from EQ.
