Realize not everyone is making mega mullah to have an "entertainment budget". Add that MMOs currently are basically beta ware, folks do have a right to complain about the subscription pricing. You also forget, the price of the game itself on top of it.
Just waltz on over to SOE and check the pricing for all their addons, which gamers will probably signup for -- it ain't $15/mon.
Then ask the F2P gamers how much they're forking over a month on their FULL TIME hobby.
So, no, the pricing on top of the game is hogwash. I can buy a FPS game and not pay a dime more for some subscription to play online (heck, I can play it all for free with AA) -- and guess what I'll buy for the VALUE?
Some companies even give away their online client (F.E.A.R. anyone?), which is as good as the original box version, because it IS the boxed version MP client.
Bottomline is, nickel and dime gamers is a sure way to go the route of Ma Bell.
There are people who have to budget for everything. They have families, saving for your children's uni in the US is pretty significant, mortgages, etc. and probably lower paying jobs than you. Heath care isn't cheap in the US, either. Some have to factor everything in, even if it's just a tenner a month. People who have to think about the amount they spend on entertainment need to be careful before they buy and subscribe to a game. Don't forget that initial box price, too. But when they're fooled by a company's advertising into buying something that is missing important stated features, contains bugs that make the game less playable, etc. that company should be held accountable and the consumer's money should be returned. It's only fair. I see people posting this sort of thing a lot and I find it a wee bit elitist. It might just be a wasted bit of dosh to you, but buying a game and subscribing to a monthly fee might be an important decision for many people who are not as lucky as you.
Oh, I do agree that people should be more patient concerning downtime for new games. It's common and you shouldn't expect perfection (ever!).
I have two mmo accounts. It's a pittance really. Still, if I have something to say about a game I'll say it. That's what the forums are for, discussion. And I'm interested to hear what others have to say as well.
A book costs less and you can easily spend a month reading a book.
Seriously what books do u read? i usually finish mine in 2-3 days. And that's with only 2-3 hrs of reading each night. Not mocking u, i m geniunly interested, somewhat of a bookworm

They're instructional books more than anything. But when I read novels, I spend a lot of time reading them, maybe it's just me, but I usually spend 4 minutes on a page.
Lol, I never considered 30 days to read a book a long time really, but I agree, I'm not a fast reader.

You still come down to what value is to you. If you have a hard time on $15 a month then you probably aren't looking to have entertainment. I do understand people spend their money where they feel they get the most of it. I used to be quite a poor individual and games were the cheapest form of entertainment really.
I do agree folks have the right to complain about the pricing as everyone is free to speak about what they want. However, I do think if you are looking to spend money on a game by subscription you should do some research. The suckers someone spoke about before are the ones that just get sold on a box and know nothing else about what they are getting into.
You also can not really compare F2P, FPS and monthly games together. You get a different experience with all of them. I have yet to find a F2P worth my time though I really wish I could but they also make their money from shops. I do know a chunk of people that get away playing for totally free but the cost of the game is made up from the people that are spending hundreds each month to keep up with stuff. I even think it was you that said you spent $250 or maybe it was $450 in Voyage Century and that they would not get your money again. So that had a value to you and unless you were playing for about three years I would say you spent more than $15 a month.
With an FPS you just have a static world that never changes and not very interactive. With a MMO you are getting a lot more of a world though too many feel like a game to me and not a world so that is why I choose a MUD at the moment. But MMOs change and most get updates bi-monthly. WoW really annoys me on this myself because they are making a killing and you only get about 4 updates a year from them though they do add a chunk in on them.
With any game you buy though the box cost is usually for the development costs to get returned of course everyone wants their profit too. But the price in MMOs drop from the main box as expansions come and to mention SOE here, they have been putting the whole game into their expansions so when you buy the newest one you get the original game and all their addons so that is quite a deal.
In the end it just comes down to what every one thinks is the value for themselves. And the MMO market is growing and there are many options for everyone as you say there are F2P games, the average MMOs are $15 but some are less and I am sure others will go that way as well at some point. The market just needs to settle but the biggest way to show the companies what the rates should be is by not buying the ones you do not feel worth it or after you do start in on one you do not agree with you quit. I am sure it shows something when people don't buy their game but it shows even more when people leave after playing.
Plenty of Brits say "movie", especially now that the most popular place to buy tickets online is from www.movietickets.com.
yup and I disown all of them. my main point was that no way do films cost 8-12 quid.
Sorry, I misunderstood. Because you put "movie" inside quotes, I thought you were referring to the word. Although I haven't been to the cinema in London for about 10 years, it really is very pricey now. A friend of mine complained just recently that it was more than £10 for something (forget the film) at the Odeon Kensington. (outrageous prices!)
I see a lot of people complaining about the cost of MMO's each month and lately AoC is the latest whipping boy in the MMO world. Firstly if someone doesn't like a game then don't play it but I do get tired of seeing complaints about the monthly cost of MMO's when really putting it into perspective its nothing compared to most entertainment. (Working on UK pounds and based on my life style cost) * 8.99 average for any MMO a month - average hours = 10 - 40 hours a week (80-20p an hour) * 8 - 12 pounds for a movie ticket - average hours = 2 (5 pounds an hour) * 10 pounds for cafe lunch normally crappy - average hours 1 (10 pounds an hour) * 10 pounds for 3 drinks in a bar - average hours 1.5 ( 3.5 pounds an hour) * 40 pounds for concert ticket - average hours 2 (20 pounds an hour) List goes on. So in summary I have given up worrying about a usual subscription of 8.99 a month because in the grand scheme of things I play around 2 hours a day (60 hours a month = 15 p an hour!!) Lets stop moaning about developers stealing our money because they had an extra down time to patch an issue. Seriously I have seen plenty of crap movies, concerts and ate shit lunches. Do I scream for my money back? No I just accept that on occasion I won't like what I pay for and that's just life.
so...as long as I don't go to the theatre, dine out, or go to concerts, I am well within my rights to bitch about MMO prices? Just trying to make sure I understand the ground rules

I spent it on my time schedule, and when there was a sale (20% to 50% off). F2P it's optional to buy, and you pay when you can. Subscriptions don't work that way, it's like the light bill.
Plus VC had a skill I haven't found in another game yet -- Planting, and I really enjoyed it (pays really well). Open city PvP destroyed it, and I haven't went back since.
As for your comparisons about the genres, I get more out of a FPS game for free than I do with a paid MMO. Yep. In order to play a round you need warm bodies -- not wait for a group to form -- and they don't care what class/rank you are, as long as you can shoot/heal/supply/complete the objective. *I* pick a team, drop in play, and leave. No grinding and no commitments. Sometimes it costs me nothing for the fun (AA and F.E.A.R.), sometimes it costs a nice penny, BF2142/CS:2/COD2, etc -- but I'm not chained to ANY monthly fee. I don't play games all the time, and I'm not paying for something I'm not using -- want to pay for the light bill, when you're not even home?
Nope. It's Pay to Play, not Pay even when you're not Playing.

Consensus you have no idea what you are talking about. Movie/film just to clarify looking at watching a movie in the cinema can cost anything from £8-£20 and I know because I pay £8 locally and if you go to a large cinema in Leicester Square for a big budget movie then its anything around £15
DVD wise I tend to buy 1 for £10 if its a new release or 5 for £30 which works out to £6

Good post and point taken. I do know a guy over here who actually does budget for a monthly sub and if he wants a new game he has to cancel. However he does tend to buy more games like Team Fortress and Counter Strike as they have no subs.
However he bought WoW and played until level 50 in one month and I guess you can say he would have played for 20-30 hours which considering he bought the client for £10 (including one free month) its not bad value.
