sorry if this belongs in the WoW forums (not 100% sure where i should put it)
ok so with Diablo 3 announced does that mean that their MMO will be starcraft (or some random setting we have never heard of)
i think it will be starcraft
(thought i would get in the first thread for a change )

That's what I was wondering too just now... After the overexcitement slowed down a bit to let me think that is
They announced Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3... but neither of them are MMOs. And we know that they are working on a new mmo. I'm guessing Starcraft would be the most logical since it wouldn't make much sense to make Diablo 3 and a Diablo MMO. Although a brand new IP is probably very likely, I mean, they can't keep holding on to the same 3 IPs forever can they?
i would not put it past them to hold on to the same 3 forever...however i do give them some credit...they did after all come up with the 3 (granted all 3 are rip offs of some other hugely popular setting) they make those games so well.
i still have my money on starcraft or some other sci-fi style game. it would do the industry good if they made a sci-fi game (and did it well) as that would no doubt spark an interest in the genre and allow for more sci-fi mmo's.
Blizz popularized the industry, sparked a huge interest in the fantasy setting...and (god forbid) may even pull the industry into a new(er) direction

They have said that a new MMO would not be a continuation of a current frachise.
"When we announce our next MMORPG it's not going to be another WOW--we're not a company that tends to tread the same ground,It'll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level."
Said the company that just announced Diablo 3.

Yes, but Diablo isn't an MMO.
I don’t think that Bliz’s next MMO will be Starcraft, just because sci-fi MMOs are less popular than medieval ones. Just a thought…

I realize. My point was it was funny that they said, "we're not a company that tends to tread the same ground. Oh, by the way, we're releasing Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 in the near future."

Yes, I guess they know it's going to make money. We've had a lot of hack and slash games too, Baldurs gate, Neverwinter Nights, Devil May Cry.
They're all pretty good though.
It surely has to be something new...

I was wondering this myself, just as I was reading the announcement about Diablo 3. What other games do the own? Perhaps it is a game they have had in the past that did not get much attention, if that is possible.
For me it would have to be a starcraft MMO.. or maybe an RTS/MMO/RPG hybrid, you dont play a character you play a faction and you hire/build/train armies to battle other players for ownership of planets, facilities etc all in an RTS game play. /drolling
They've already denied that it'll be a continuation of an existing IP, so all new. I'm thinking it'll be announced when SC2 goes retail and be a sci-fi mmo clutching to the hype of SC2. I can't see Bli$$ard risking loosing more WoW subs with another fantasy mmo and they won't launch WoW2 when WoW is still going strong (can't see why personally, I prefer a challenge where my 4 yr old can't earn pvp rankings...yeah, he melees as a Lock and nobody expects it so he cuts them down fast, seriously).
Coffee, the hybrid idea is actually a pretty good idea. I know that that ground has already been tread on by any MMORTS (such as "Beyond Protocol"), but I would think that Blizzard would want to tread ground that needs to come into the spotlight because its so good, hence perhaps the title "Next-Generation MMO" that they refer to the new MMO by on their job listings website. So i don't think its going to be an RPG, but who knows, this is Blizzard we're talking about here, they managed to keep Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 secret for so long, so we have a while until we find out.
To blackthornn, it doesn't matter if they lose subscribers from WoW to another of their MMOs, its still the same money coming in. Also... wow, you're 4-year old son plays WoW? Melees as a warlock? I mean, WOW! He must be some sort of child prodigy or something, most complex game i could play when i was that age was pacman.
I hope Blizzard learns from the mistakes they made in World of Warcraft when developing their next MMO. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing it... I subscribed for 3 years and have 4 level 70s. I don't think of myself as a fanboy or a hater but choose the middle ground as I can see both the positive and negative aspects of the game. Although linear, I found the quest system excellent and easy to follow, some of the quest types where anoying, I particularly hated Duskwood as Alliance with the majority of quests at the other end of the zone to the quest givers. The overdependence on gear, particularly in pvp made unenjoyable for those that were more casual.
For the next MMO, I'd like to see them move away from the traditional EQ2/WoW/LotRO genre into something different. There are various genres they could look at Space based (not like EvE,more SWG) or possibly Gothic (Vampires, etc.). I would probably stay away from post apocalyptic as this is coverd by Earthrise and Fallen Earth. I'd like to see them move away from the current leveling system into maybe a skill based, lets do away with new spells every couple of levels and have a skill tree or too that you could choose your own path and be truly unique, ie. not class based, everyone starts off the same.
I'd also like to see crafting be more meaningful and not as pointless as it is in WoW, naybe with a new gathering system where you salvag rather than gathr natural resources.
Well, thats my $0.02 for what it's worth...
well i would love to see a sci-fi setting, as for an MMORTS....i dunno....they arent that appealing to many people and (from the ones i have played) are quite hard to get into, people who have played from the start of a phase (phases last a set period then the game is wiped) or have played quite a bit of phases have no trouble smashing the new guys.
anyway a Sci-fi MMO would be nice. i dont mind if it is a starcraft...but i am not 100% sure how that would work as that universe is basically 100% war and in an MMO there needs to be balance.

Said the company that just announced Diablo 3.
Priceless
I think trying to derive what their new MMO will be based on Diablo 3 being announced is not really possible. If you look at it we have Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. We don't have a Warcraft 4 but will we in the future? Who knows?
Also, saying they won't be "doing another WoW" doesn't mean the next MMO won't be one of their IPs. But I do agree that it's likely to be Starcraft or a new IP, not Diablo.

Life sucks, buy a helmet.
It's quite logical creating these sequels when fans are screaming for more, now isn't it? With that kind of mentality the majority of companies would close their doors after their first product is released. "Wow! Our game just hit number one on the sales charts. The ratings are all amazing. The fans really want a sequel. But no! We shall not betray the oath - we are a company that likes to tread on new ground and as such ALL our employees will be devoted to our new game. To hell with the fans and the potential gold-mine we're sitting on here!"
I would have to go wtih Starcraft as the new mmo. If you think back to when WoW was first announced they basically used WC3 as the promotion for it. Why not do the same thing with SC2. As soon as SC2 is a hit seller they will release the expansion pack and that expansion pack with come with the announcement of the mmo. Just like they did with WC2.
It is definatley Startcraft. It would take waaay too much creativity and it would be waaay to much of a finacial gamble for Blizzard to do and IP with an MMO.
These games take years and years to develop.
Also judging by the fact that Blizzard doen't really sway from a working formula (SC2 and Diablo 3 are the same game essentially) And the post Warcraft 3 release (first time Warcraft with 3D Graphics) was followed by WoW.
It would make sense that the SC2 Release (first time in 3D) would be followed with an MMO from Starcraft.
Plus I mean it makes so much sense. There are so many classes/vehicles you could have and also a 3-way war would be an interesting conflict. And great step in the right direction for the future of MMO's ( I know its been done before) .
But yeah NO WAY it will be an IP.
No way they will risk developing a hybrid RTS/MMO. Those games are so niche it would never reach the success of WoW. What they need is something for the 8 million (whatever it is) to migrate too. They don't want to turn them off with something completely different. I REALLY hope it isn't a RTS/MMO hybrid.
my opinion its definitely StarCraft.
Blizz isnt about to make a MMO that would directly compete with world of warcraft, that would be silly. So whatever MMO theyre likely designing wont be the same genre as WoW is.
Starcraft MMO would give sci-fi fans a place to call home without diminishing WoW subscriptions. It would bring in ex-swg players and maybe some AO players as well looking for a new sci-fi MMO.
I cant see Blizz going out and making a MMO from scratch. A game like WoW or Starcraft already has a built-in fan base. Something brand new is a huuuuge risk and Blizz isnt known as a risktaker
