I think there is more to it than that.

I firmly believe that developers who love to raid destroyed EQ, it was not WoW or anything else.  A factor is the inability of SOE to listen to his base of gamers.  Whoever runs marketing is incorrect when she distributes memos and attends meetings and tells everyone, "our base is the raiders."

SOE had this strategy that got the best of it:  (1) release expansions as often as possible to (a) satisfy the zergers and (b) milk the mainstream consumer; and (2) make most fun, rewarding content available for raid guilds.

When SOE moves away from this strategy, subscribers go UP;  morale goes UP;  the game is better overall; but there is an old guard that insists on raiding.  I believe they are not always well intentioned.

Why the hell do you play EQ?

    Me?

    Yes.  YOU!

The game offers a deeper group experience than other games on the market.  I raided last night.  I am even a member of a "raid" guild.  But I am a member of the raid guild mostly out of necessity, really, to progress and see more content.

I play because I was able to box, with friends and family, and do a lot of things together.

Now it seems boxing is less useful to me, and it is becoming more burdensome, not sure what I will do.

    Looking forward to trying WAR.

Edit:  If Vanguard had more group content, and similar character customization as in EQ, I would probably be playing that.

EQ for me is like an old house that I just cannot sell.

I have left only to return.

Most of the "brick walls" people experience are articial in terms of how easily they are surmounted if you become a "raider" and obtain the gear, the thousands of AA points and so forth.

The game is very, very imbalanced between raiders and everyone else.

    Second edit:

The revamped zones were a brilliant idea, but they were too short in duration and ironically empowered zergers and flat farmers because these two groups, using cheats/hacks, monopolized camps.

The revamped zones became something of an exploit for them.

Yeah dont say anything about the zergers and plat farmers monopolizing the revamped zones on Soe's official forums, they will gather en masse against you and tell you your crazy. These people dont give a damn if the game dies or not as long as they are tops right now.

    Excellent points.

    1)  It is why I do not post on "official" forums; they are dishonest.  Censorship, in my view, is a serious and disgraceful problem, especially in the gaming industry.

    2)  You are right about the culture of those who want to be on "top" through (a) zerging, (b) cheating, and (c) other means (such as monopolizing camps and occassionally training ordinary gamers).

The community in EQ is worse than in WoW, but that is just my opinion.  It is totally dominanted by hackers, zergers, and plat farmers.  It is remarkably sad, and I still enjoy the game.  I am in a "raid" guild, though it is mostly out of necessity.  No sense of genuine community in the guild in-game or on the guild's forums;  just attention toward "progress" and "loots."

I am hoping EQ continues in the right direction --look at the success of Living Legacy-- and continues on the path of making the game:

    • Welcoming to new players (and returners)
    • Accessible to group-oriented players with content and rewards that reduce, if not eliminate, the need to raid

Aside:  I love how they added zones to the old world continents.  I always wondered why they never did that before and just added newly discovered continents or planes.

Oh, I hope the Halloween content this year is fun!

EQ1 looked absolutely horrid when it came out. The recent graphical upgrades actually put it much closer to present day quality than it was to late 90s 3D gaming standards when it came out. That said, I don't understand why this is so important to people, when all MMOs have lousy graphics compared to today's top of the line games in other genres.

I tried the game a few times over the last decade and could never enjoy it because it made me seasick, but this year I made it a project to get into EQ, and the fact that it's empty & dying is exactly why. I want to see Norrath before it's gone and I can only get a glimpse of it from hundreds of years later in the form of EQ2. To anyone who cares about these games and enjoys exploring big fantasy worlds, I would urge you to give it another try. But do yourself a favor and set up your keybindings and interface so that you are comfortable with them. I swear this can be done if you employ some patience!

The communities in old and disintegrating games are often hostile because many of the players are defensive about newer games, sometimes because they take their hardware limitations very personally. To make things worse a superiority complex sets in, and quite a few people are angry because they really aren't having fun anymore but are clinging to the past.

I've been playing on The Combine, the progression server which is no longer a progression server because they've progressed to the latest expansion. This fact makes no difference, because what makes the server special is people rolled there because they wanted to play the old content. I level slowly and my characters are still pretty low, but I have a pretty easy time finding groups, and unlike the newer games a pickup group isn't necessarily full of evil morons. They tend to be alts who've seen it many times before, aren't in much of a hurry, and have dealt for years with new players and our limitations & expectations. I have had two or three bad experiences on this server *ever* and they weren't particularly ugly.

To anyone here wanting to give the game a try but not sure what to do or feeling mistreated by other players, send a tell or mail to Vacuos or Winterlong and I'll be glad to group for just about anything.

ohh the good old days of eq... i remember playing this game when i was in highschool.. which was about 8-10 years ago =/... was runing on a old crappy computer that had a geforce2 or something like that(very weak) I started off on the Ayonoe Ro server(spelling maybe off)  Which is now combined to the Tribunle server i believe.  Remember when the expansions came out than Luclin... those were the good old days staying up till the school bus came, going about class half awake~or half a sleep... /sign

went back about a year ago and everyone was like gone, i mean dead... remember when everyone was standing around the bazaar and blocking the zone entrance to luclin? fun.. or even way back before that We had our bazaar out in EC, eastern commons i think in that funky tunnel... now the game is like 100% different, new bazaar area, guild room/post/message board and god damn no more corpse run... whats the fun in that when everyone wipes in either Old Seb or the planes.. usually was fear or hate i forget which, but man that was fun.. or discovering velious when it came out... good times... good times... people fighting over those haste gloves than the sash, than those Cent. swords... for people who actually remember those times.  lol

well thats enough of my rant, was a great game, great community when it lasted, havent tried eq2 jumped to ffxi and wow now just looking for something...

EQ is wasily the best MMO I have ever played. I remember how much fun I had on my gnome mage in Luclin. I didnt even get higher than 50 or so it was that hard. The battles were epic, ranging from Minotaurs to mobs of skeletons or cutpurses. EC tunnels were jampacked, every decent item was memorized due to necessity. If you didnt know what it was, it was quickly sold to another prospect. The evil cities were just that, evil. The good cities glimmered with dignity and hope. Every aspect of the game was immersive, and RP was not frowned upon making playing your class that much more fun. WoW is honestly the only MMO to have come close to the fun I had in EQ, and that was because I had friends playing with me, EQ I just had my guild. "QQS" and "Lazer pew pews" aside it seems reasonable to be the only contender with EQ to me.

    Waaaagh!

EQ was amazing when it first released.

You shouldn't judge such an old game by todays standards.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

What people will and can never understand about Everquest was that it was about more than the game.  It was a graphical chat room.  I can remember getting on for hours and just chatting with my guild and barely even moving my toon.  The social chemistry in that game was WAY beyond anything out there today and will never be duplicated.  That is what the EQ haters can never comprehend.

Sure the first car was awsome and revolutionary, but if you want a good ride, would you take a model-T over a Viper?

Yes thats true xephonics, but you don't critizice the model-T for not having the awesome engine that a Viper has because it was created way before the Viper's engine. Same with EQ and other current MMORPGS. You can't critize EQ for not having the super graphics because when it was first created, no game could have/run those graphics. EQ was groundbreaking for its day. It paved the way for other MMORPGS. Thats why EQ is great.

Whoah! Now when EQ first came out... uh... It was FRIKKIN AWESOME! OMG! I so loved this game! But, WoW has really messed up my mmo gaming attention span. I know I can't go back to EQ because I've already posted asking about coming back and people say unless you multi box or have a bunch o' friends that play it's not worth it. But, I am trying out Eve Online and so far even though it's older - it still seems to rock pretty hard! Plus I love sci fi and the fantasy worlds are overdone at this point.
