My first MMO was Ultima Online and it's still my favorite. Although it is officially ruined and outdated, the game offered more than any other game out there. With the exception of EVE Online probably.
Playing: Xsyon. Played: Tried: Ultima Online, Everquest 2, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Flyff, Perfect World, Silkroad Online, EVE Online, Ryzom.

I have played about every RPG out there, so I will just list each aspect of a mmorpg and my winner of each:
Quests - EQ - No pun intended but it truly was the pioneer of intricate and diverse quests, from quick ones to epic, from solo to group, it was all there and it was ultra-fun living that experience.
PvP - UO - I'll never forget my first PvP experience going into a dungeon by my lonesome to hunt when 3 red robed guys with skeleton masks raped me at the entrance and took everything I had then cut up my body into pieces. Through hard work I eventually became an overpowered (due to skill gitches) vigilante and killed anyone who indisriminantly killed newer players outside town. That got me totally hooked on PvP and its been an addictive drug ever since.
Crafting - SWG - Their mining, crafting, extracting processes were not only well designed, but also addicting. And if you can make a game where mining for a high concentration of ore is an 'exciting' thing, you know you did something right. But like many others on this board, after CU started to go downhill.
Leveling - nothing was more appealing then hearing that loud DING of EQ, even non-benchmark levels had people in ecstasy in the OOC channel. Unreal.
Community - WoW. The guild structure there is second to none and also has the highest concentration of mature players than any other game, many in their 20's 30's and even 40's.
Graphics - LoTR - the most beautiful landscaping you will ever experience, fluid creatures and great effects (with a fast computer). Content and quests is more of a modified clone to WoW so it can certainly improve on that aspect, but just for eye candy this game is worth trying.
Depth - Gemstone IV - Really showing my age here, but being a text MUD, this game was unmatched in terms of depth. Weapons, clothes, customization is limitless. Special merchants/casinos/fairs making random appearances; Secret societies with special powers; Festivals and invasions of towns. This had it all. Leveling (which used to be unlimited) now set at 100 which would still take years to hit for an average player. It is no mistake as to why this game is still around after 20 years, a phenomenal accomplishment in this age.
As far as mmorpg's go I come way back from the original everquest days (Before all of the expansions) and must say to this day that continues to live on in my head as the best of the best. I have been playing nearly mmo to come out since that time and few titles, can even compare to it's greatness, as long as your into game play and not one of those graphics whores that are seen all too much nowadays.
My first (sadly) was runescape. After the Grand Exchange came out in that game (if you have played rs you would know what this is) everything was ruined. R.I.P. Runescape...
My favorite had to be Silkroad, although there are alot of problems with it, it was very addicting for me.
I am currently considering buying Guild Wars though, which looks like fun.
My first mmorpg was Runescape. I think i might have played 20+ mmorpgs. I have played runescape from realese until Jagex fucked up the game with the retarded updates. No mmo have ever got to me like runescape did. *sadface* I might return when they get the graphic updates up and running.. (early july, i think) But ATM, WOW is probably my favorite..
I feel exactly the same way as you do towards runescape. Nothing has matched the days when me and 10 others from my school used to run around the wilderness trying and failing to PK people. We also had iron wars and so on - it was happy days !
Playing: Xsyon. Played: Tried: Ultima Online, Everquest 2, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Flyff, Perfect World, Silkroad Online, EVE Online, Ryzom.
I came to MMO's through EQ2. I had been into rpg's, (first pen and paper, and then computer ones) all my life. I had always dreamt of being able to recreate my halcyon AD&D days on the computer, especially as my gaming group grew apart.
When I first saw the gorgeous trailors for EQ2, my jaw dropped. Surely I had found my Holy Grail of gaming needs. I really enjoyed the game, but soon learned that the genre was not what I was expecting (namely a computer representation of a role-playing world). I think the closest any game has come to this is Ultima Online, but I have not played it, so don't know.
I had to leave EQ2 for personal reasons, which I am not going to go into here. Then I trawled through the list of available titles to see if any game could satisfy my needs. Sadly, to this day, none have. Howvever, I have found a great game in Lord of the Rings Online. The attention to detail is mind blowing.
Sadly, my search for the perfect MMO goes on. Until then, I shall be happy with LotR.

Gemstone III as it was massive, multiplayer, online, and certainly an RPG.
Ultima Online was my first graphical experience.
Well over 10 MMOs but most don't last very long due to their obvious rehash of everything else out there.
First: Ultima Online
Favorite: SWG

My Favorite MMORPG is Lineage 2
SWG for the win!
(before it started sucking real bad).
I was a FPS(TFC,CS,ET) whore for a long time until my friends talked me into playing this game called....Runescape.
I was hooked from the start and never looked back, been playing every MMORPG I could get my hands on since then.
Runescape was my first but I think SWG was my favorite.
Man, if Runescape ever gets a real engine, they could do some things.

1999 - Ultima Online was my 1st one and still to this day is dear to me. Other than that, I greatly enjoyed SWG, EVE, EQ2 and I must admit even WoW.
At the moment, I'm giving AoC a go - and in all honestly think it is fun.
