Blizzard was never worried about AoC and as the record shows the didn't need to be either, if they had been they would have released Wotlk 1 month before AoC as they did with TBC to defuse Vanguard (which in the end they didn't need to do), instead they are holding wotlk for War and it does look like Blizzard has once again outplayed all its opponents.

Well, I mean...it makes sense really.
Leave it to the guys who made blockbuster strategy games to be really good at making awesome strategies. I think everyone knew that they were most afraid of WAR....because its through warhammer that they even came to life to begin with. Of all the games out...those two are sitting on the same market level. They ARE direct competition...and WAR has been planning for it the whole time. They, very wisely, chose to market to the players who loved WoW...but wanted more PvP stuff.
It WILL prove to be an awesome battle. I really think that WAR chose right...and that it will pay off. Maybe not on the same success level as WoW....but it will score them a ton of player if they do it right. Considering they already MADE a game just like WAR that was a success....I see no reason they cannot.
Exactly what it says it is. Spore is a game that is about to come out that is basically entirely about making creatures and letting them create a civilization.
The creator is a 10$ pre-release that lets followers go ahead and start playing around with ideals till it releases.
Editor that allows you to create your creature for when the game comes out later.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

I think it's funny how people keep trying to find ways to show that AoC isn't complete crap and that it's somehow selling well. This game will do OK in it's own little niche, but it's bad publicity at launch has been overwhelming which will hurt the overall fanbase in the long run. AoC simply shot too soon and they weren't ready. Bad word of mouth at launch is harsh. Vanguard's launch comes to mind every time I think of this game.

I agree completely. And to think the CC is only a small fraction of the actual game. Funny how such a small component is so much more enjoyable than an entire mmo.
In my opinion.. lol
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence. Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.
There aren't any real numbers on the list. For all we know Spore sold 1 million copies and AoC sold 100 boxes while the other eight titles sold under 100 copies. That would still put AoC at number two...
A clear example of how stats can be manipulated.
Still, I'm guessing AoC sold a good amount but you really need to take PC sales numbers with a grain of salt. They don't have console game numbers. On the other hand, I have to say AoC might not be doing as well as they want considering they are only one ranking above WoW which has been around for over three years.
Hard to interpret the list when there are no concrete sales figures.

WRONG! Try again. PC gaming accounts for 60% of the gaming industry. Previous to this year Pc gaming only had it's retail sales counted. Just this year they did another recount in the gaming industry. This time for the Pc including online digital downloads and MMO subs as well as shop retail sales and the results showed Pc gaming amounted to 60% of the market. There are over 236 million online Pc gamers. The so called end of the Pc you hear each time a new generation of consoles hits is nothing more than the console companies PR teams springing in to action, only different now days is they tend to use the viral marketing approach which results in misinformed people like your self falling for it.

Again, another way stats are manipulated...
If you actually believe the 236 million PC gamers all go out and buy $50 games you are delusional. The numbers are taking into account people who download those simple flash or casual games too. Those gamers take up the actual bulk of PC gamers. Those games cost $5-10 to download.
I never said PC gaming is dead but they don't match the numbers of console games sold among their AAA titles. If a PC game sells 100-200K copies, it is considered a good success. AAA titles for consoles break 1 million sales all the time.
is nt the true measure of a mmorpg s success not how many people buy a hyped game but how many stay month after month ? it does nt matter if a million people buy aoc if only one in ten stays . i wonder how many of these people have brought the game only to find how poorly it runs on their mid range pc or got frustrated with all the bugs and issues with the graphics engine and feel ripped off by funcom . short term funcoms paid for conan devlopment. long term have they done damage to thier companys reputation .
its really still too early to tell . i think it is undeniable that it was released too soon . there are good ideas in the game and thier are some ideas that really should have been ironed out more at its inception .
as always an mmo is a work in progress but if a game gets a terrible rep from the start like vanguard its unlikly it ll recover enough to be much of a success . the clock is ticking for aoc and i would think they have till autumn when other games and expansisons are being released to turn things around.
Originally posted by shadenis . Anyway. Cloning WOW/EQ formula doesn't make that mmo successful, the opposite infact. I think allot of people want something different. Not games lke AOC or LOTRO but something different, something more like EVE but with a easier learning curve and a balance between linear storytelling and sandbox game play /virtual world content and the possibility to affect the world.
If this statement were true, more people would be playing EVE. The truth is, more people want to play a game like WoW. That is why it is selling more. Does that mean WoW is better? No at all. It just means that more people are interested in it.
When EVE has numbers that are anything near what WoW has you will see developers put serious effort into improving that formula. Until then, sandbox type games will remain a niche market.
More people want to play a "game" then play in a "world". Proven by sales.
True but i didn't said that really. I said that sandbox games can also be really successful. EVE may be a sandbox game but it isn't perfect. You are bound to be in a spaceship, not really good combat system and offline progression. That are many drawbacks for many people who love sandbox. Create a well polished sandbox game in a fantasy on ground and i think it can easily get 500 k + because there are enough fans for the sandbox market.
However, linear, easy mmo will stay of course on the top but anyway.
Niche does not mean a failure, niche can sell more then mainstream. That is possible. Niche only means catering to one or 2 groups and not the whole market ( mainstream/masses) .
NICHE can fail
Niche can succeed
Mainstream can succeed but it can also fail.
But i was never a fan of mainstream games. More people= more immaturity.

I wish they would introduce a pvp p server that is actually.. oh I don't know....
difficult?
easy leveling and no death penality does not a good mmo make.
It would appear that the vast majority of the gaming community disagrees with you. That would make your statement a personal opinion. The numbers here would then also make your personal opinion a VERY niche one.
Next up:
Making games super grindy and with heavy death penalties is often just a cover for the fact that nothing IS actually difficult. The vast majority of my past MMO deaths (in games like UO and EQ...ect..) were from completely bogus junk. Things like a spawn appearing slightly off its normal place...or someone running a train into me. If I only counted the time I actually died in an actually DIFFICULT encounter...none of the penalties would have really mattered either way.
You need neither of the things you mention to make a game difficult. You need them to drag out the gameplay to ensure longer subs when you can't create content fast enough or good enough to satisfy. Good job, mate, you're a large part of the reason why THIS market blows so much anymore. You don't bother trying to move forward, you are always stuck in reverse.

Absolutely right. Does your opinion matter to me when I'm choosing which game I'm going to pay for? Absolutely not.
Doesn't that automatically make it better? Only on certain aspects but apparently the most important ones.
