MMORPG Games - A General Rule (IMHO)

In my opinion, as a general rule, the only MMO's out there that are truley great are those that you have to purchase and pay a monthly fee.
Obviouly there are exceptions to this, such as Guild Wars which is fantastic considering there is no monthly fee, does anyone else know any MMO's that are amazing without the need for purchase and/or monthly fee's?
I felt that i needed to present this issue because it really annoys me when people say that games such as POTC Online and Runescape are fantastic and/or better than retail games.
