That isn't WoW?
I became interested in finding a very item centric MMO after reading a post about why WoW isn't number one here, and someone mentioned finding the style that best fits you as a player. And to me, tweaking stats, and building my character up through gear is the best part of an MMO.
I've been reading these forums a lot, and avoiding posting for a long time, but now I figured I'd seek your advice in this category. There seems to be a lot of 'niche' mmo players in this forum, so I was wondering if there are other gear loving players like me out here. And if you are, what game have you had the most fun building your character in?
Heres an example of what I haven't liked -
Everquest: Getting gear upgrades during all levels is important for me, especially if leveling takes a long time (which it doesn't right now in EQ.) However, I enjoy getting my gear dropped from mobs, I prefer only getting some smaller upgrades bought from other players. Yet in EQ, I felt like I was getting all my upgrades from the Bazaar.
So please tell me other mmo's that you enjoyed building your character in (or didn't like), or tell me that no mmo is ever going to have gear that matters again, and I'm a dying breed .

LOTRO ~ PvE with some PvP in a seperate area that's by choice!
FFXI ~ PvE & Every single item that drops has a use...there is no trash...or vendor crap!
Lineage 2 / Vanguard / Guild Wars.
But in all 3 you can buy gear with money from traders though.
The difference between awful gear and awesome gear in LotRO is minimal at best. It's not item centric by any means.

Hey Water! You forgot Everquest One! One of the besst MMORPGS EVARH. JOIN TODAY www.everquest.com

EQ used to be cool, just like hand cranking a car used to be cool.
Now you can use electric starters.
That some people like driving a 1960 Ford model doesn't make them cool automobiles.

But... if you like destroying your ENVIRONMENT... a 1960 ford still spews out some opposing fumes
OP, sounds like you wanna twink. Anarchy Online is your best bet.

I hate to say this but.. I agree with bluealien1
I really like LotrO but it doesnt seem like the game you are looking for... Alot of peple play it just because it isnt as item centric as WoW...
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
DAoC might fit your discription if you haven't tried it.
ALL rpg's are item centric.
If you have to go out of your way to get an item instead of just buying it, its item centric.
If they use items as rewards, its item centric.
I will give you that some are more item centric than others though.
Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7
Is there one that ISN'T item centric?

I might get flamed for this... but
Hellgate: London?
It's been steadily improving over these months and its a decent past time now... It is completely gear-centric, you constantly collect stuff, upgrade stuff, twiddle with numbers etc... and you can play the basic game without subscription.
To be on the safe side, I'd advise wait for a patch or two till they introduce some meanigfull PvP, item sets (unless they're already in, haven't checked) etc..
Oh, and it is not a "proper" MMO - it's more Diablo style where you gang up with other people to do some instance runs. More people - tougher monsters and better loot.
Check it out and see if it'll fit your bill when it finally "goes gold". /a bit of sarcasm there since it was one of the most awful releases EVER
