The only way marketing would "carry the day" would be if all the players that got burned went away quietly.  SOE/LEC went to a lot of trouble to make that happen too.  They tried to discredit our experience in media interviews, in magazines and in the forums.  In their forums our posts were edited to say entirely different things than intended, they were moved to obscurity, they were locked or deleted.  People that posted their true thoughts and feelings, even respectfully were banned.
I guess you can't piss on a few hundred thousand people and then silence them after all.  For everyone that spoke up, nice job.  As a result, thousands got refunds on the expansion that was gutted by the nasty surprise called the NGE, some claim to have received full subscription refunds, gamers everywhere approach SOE with caution, and both SOE and LEC have recently undergone extensive restructuring.  While numerous factors are related to all of these changes, veteran players who did not accept SOE and LEC's abuse quietly certainly played a role.  I say, "well done all"  :)

I loved SWG Pre NGE just like the rest of you, had many, many great times. Most of the bugs didn't bother me much, in fact warping became expected LOL !

Several things IMO started making the game going down hill. The player base got a bit out of control around the Jedi Holo grind time, mostly because of the way SOE handled it.

But above all else I think the game code just became to much to handle for the devs. Duping exploits were all to common and seemed very hard for them to fix. And the fact that it happened on such a massive scale. Being able to shove many extra crystals in a LS when crossing zone line exploit. Just to name a few.

I didn't care about buff bots as it served a function at least. But gezz the number of spammers was completely out of control.

Would I come back and start bran new on a clasic server ? Heck yeah in a heart beat. Because even with all teh bugs and exploits the game had it is still the best game around, even dated as it would be now.

Well, that and a buck will get you a cup of coffee.  Don't go to one of those coffee shops though, they have horrible coffee.  Find a local diner, they usually have pretty good coffee.

Then again, with the anger you exhibit, maybe you should cut down on caffeine.  You won't find a decent cup of decaff coffee, so don't waste your time looking.  They try god bless 'em, but decaff is just lacking in flavor.

    Yeah...

My wife took a job here in Australia--- so we rarely get to see much US news--- but on the air here its all

    DOOM DOOM DOOM

I miss office joe very much --- here I have to pay 3.50 for a crappy flat white --- when all I really want is straight up black joe. Oh yeah and 7.00 a gallon is really working my nerves -- as is the 12 bucks a pack of smokes.

To get back to the original topic. the Devs want to discredit the vets because simply, it's the easier thing to do.   Imagine....you are in a company who's bottom line is to make money.  You have an intellectual property that has spanned 3 decades, Darth Vader is as common as Apple Pie in america. Someone howe you have managed to bungle this money making cow, in such away that it simply is epic in nature (noahs ark comes to mind).  someone has to take the blame, and the guy signing my check isn't going to believe it's me if I can help it.

Whining about whining is still whining; actually it is even more superflous whining than the original whining. At least the original whiner has SOMETHING to whine about, as opposed to the whining of others. Quite simply; whining about whining is simply whining for the sake of whining.

This isn't about change; change is a beautiful thing. This is about lying and fraud. There's a difference. If people talking about it bothers you so much perhaps it is time you moved on; maybe the internet os not for you.

and the devs have failed in making us look bad every time

the devs do not understand that we know where mmogaming is going it is going back to sandbox systems as the level based games have failed.

great times are ahead my friends

This sentence alone is probably one of the dumbest things I have ever seen posted on this site.

    And that is saying something.

If SWG was a reskinned anything.. it was a reskinned UO.

I mean if you really think Pre-CU SWG was anything like EQ1.. then there is an issue.. somewhere.

I'm not going to debate if a game sucked or didn't suck.. its subjective.. you can't make an objective statement.  You can make a personal statement.

But to try and compare two games that were polar opposites as being the same... yes I'm sorry but I just can't even comprehend that one.

In fact that statement was so illogical.. it made the people you were saying looked bad.. most definitely look good in comparison.  I'm sorry but... just the way I see it.

yeah, right...level based games have failed.  While I certainly support more and better sandbox style games, even I won't make delusional statements like this.

As for the Dev's trying to silence vets?  I think their track record is pretty clear on this, they really don't care what their former player base thinks about anything.  Its just the SOE way.

Actually, all level based games except two have had steadily declining subs.*  One of them is Runescape, a freeware browser game.

The other one is World of Warcraft, but it's unclear if the level-based mechanics are the cause of it's success.  Frankly, I suspect that it could have launched WoW with Ultima-style sand, and still be a success, because the Warcraft IP sold this game.  Heck, even if the game was full of NGE brokenness, it would still have been the biggest game out there.

You can throw Dofus in there if you want, but that's more of a hybrid level/skillpoint system.

Considering that maybe 90% or more online games are level based, it means that the majority of level-based games are failing to grow.  So I don't think it is outlandish to claim that level based games have failed.  Case in point, which level-based games launched after WoW are growing today?  Even Lord of the Rings is starting to buckle.

On the other hand, if you look at sandbox, both EVE and Second Life are growing steadily.

Level-based games have failed? What color is the sky in your world?

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

well to me it isnt that level-based games are failing its that all the people who cut their mmo teeth on wow (see eq1 eq2 lotro, etc) are starting to get their fill of the themepark rides and are wanting to try something different. level based games will always be around...and probably on top. history shows that themepark games can draw the numbers but people don't stick around after they get sick of riding the bumper cars for the millionth time. while traditionaly sandbox games get smaller numbers...a cult folowing that will stay and play for years. combining the two is the holy grail of development.
