Sound card for laptops?

BdonedgeBdonedge Member CommonPosts: 59

I'm into recording (as well as gaming, yes thats why I'm here) and am in need of one for my new laptop. I have a really nice sound card in my desktop but seeing as how it fits in an expansion slot with external plugs, where exactly would a sound card go into a laptop? Especially one that would have extra inputs and outputs?

I need something with 96Khz and 24 bit. If not, I will at least accept sometihng with 16bit 44.1khz that works with any program in vista ultimate with NO problem.

The reason I ask all this is because I could go with M-audio but I don't want to be spending 200 bucks like I did on my last sound card and was curious if anyone had any experience with it.

Please send any information and recommendations, thanks.

There are some USB Sound card addons you can use.  The only one that fits your criteria is one by Creative for around $80.  However, the reviews on it aren't very good.  There is also a 5.1 Channel 16-bit 48khz Asus Xonar one for around $50, and a couple 2 channel ones for $20.  If you really want the good stuff, you would be spending over $200.  You can connect devices through the PCMCIA and Firewire Ports.

Okay I actually had no idea that cards like that would be run through USB or firewire. I have a smaller Firewire port its looking like. I don't necessarily need 96khz, 48 is more than enough to be honest and I suppose since this isn't my main rig I guess 24 bit wouldn't be absolutely necessary so 16 provides high enough quality for demos.

I will look into what you just said, thanks for the info. If you have anymore let me know!

Ive used usb soundcards before and It was a 15 dollar one and it sounds pretty good actually.   Yeah the creative one looks to be the best at 96Khz. It has only 9 reviews on newegg and its got like 3 or 4 eggs but Im sure it sounds better than that $15 one Ive used.   Although Asus has been besting  Creative on the card type looks like they havent gotten to the usb part yet.........
