Is having a cell phone an obligation to answer it?

Seriously.  I mean,  why do people expect you to answer your cell phone immediately.  Has anyone ever said to you: "why have a cell phone at all if you're not going to answer it." And why isn't it good enough to call back in the next day or so.

What I need to figure out is how to get someone off the phone quicker. Besides hanging up on them. Maybe that's the only way.

If I don't answer my phone (which is often) and the person doesn't leave a message, I don't feel it is important enough for me to call them back.

I pretty much agree with this view.

Also if you want to end a conversation fast one way i do it is i just say that i need to go now if there isnat anything else have a nice day.

Another way is to ask them if they ahve anything important to pass along just text it so i can read it later.

This EXACTLY one of the reasons I refuse to get a cell phone.

I don't care if I seem ancient or archaic.  I am not someone on a leash and if I want to be unavailable I don't feel like I need to make an excuse for it.

My employer insisted that I get one, and I stood my ground.  I'm just not going to do it.

Besides that, there is some evidence that they aren't good for you.  Whether it's true or not, I really don't want to take the risk.  The evidence I've read is somewhat compelling.

Most - not all - mobile phone users annoy me. Constant jabbering is annoying. I also do not like being bothered all the time.

Mine is constantly on silent, pretty much used for outgoing calls only.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

I agree- the constant talking all over the place is so damn annoying.  If I could somehow log into my friend's Vent server from my phone and broadcast his raids on speaker while sitting next to a cell phone addict, I wonder if that would get my point across.

It looks like I'm the exact opposite of all of you.  Basically I don't know what I'd do without my cell phone.

Don't get me wrong, it can be annoying at times -- I was required to have one for work so I've got e-mails, texts and calls coming through at all hours all day.

Yeah, I hate the 2 AM e-mails that sometimes wake me up, and I hate seeing a number from a client and I just KNOW I have to answer it RIGHT NOW, but it's also very liberating.  I don't have to be stuck in the office reading e-mails during work hours all the time,  I'm always connected in case of an emergency (which happens alot in my business), It gives me something to do while I'm in the car   --- plus I don't have to be at home to check the weather, movie times, or directions.

I will say though when I started this new job they expected me to carry a company phone as well as my personal... that was 2 CELL PHONES.. that was alittle too much... so I junked the work phone and upgraded my personal.

Also other cell users that aren't me are pretty annoying. .. ya.. I said it.

I have two cell phones.  One for business and the other for non-business related things.    Do I answer my phones whenever they ring.  Not always.  Depends on what I am doing at the time and where I am at.   Do I feel obligated?  No.  If I cannot answer the phone right away, I expect the person to at least leave me a message.   Now under circumstances and if I know the number the call is coming from  I will answer it always - otherwise no.

I never answer my phone, I wait for them to leave me a message so I know what they want. If they don't leave one, must not have been very important.

If they text me I usually respond an hour later ;)

I have a cell phone, leave it in the car, never really use it. Yeah, I've already gotten that "why do you have one if you don't answer" from my brothers. Guess I'm too old fashioned (and I'm one of the youngest brothers, and the most tech savvy heh)

Never had a cellphone myself. No real need since I am hooked up to a Pc at all times. I just recieve texts when Im around. When Im not they have no effect on me and frankly I want my privacy.

I have a cell phone but I don't actually use it almost. I don't know why, but I have an email, shrug, and I sort of hate being bothered every time for little thing.

Some people call for stupid things and just waste your time imo.

I had a Cell Phone, then I threw it out.  Sprints the devil.

I think I've been pretty clear to my friends that I much prefer text messages since I never hear what they say when they call and I much prefer to answer when I got the time to do it - not when they got the time to do it. Calls should only be used if something is so urgent that there can't wait until a few minutes later.

I second this!  I also refuse to own a cell phone for these very reasons.  It's not that there aren't moments that I wish I had one, they just don't out weigh the cost/bother/leash associated.

Umm...how can you honestly live without one?  Just curious...OK.   I know some of you feel they are ball-n-chain device...but they are handy.

Quite easily actually.  People call me at home.  I call people at home.  When I go shopping, I go shopping.  If I forget something, I either use a pay phone (way cheaper per month) or wait until next time.  In my opinion, there is nothing in my life that requires my instant response.

Now, I'm not saying there aren't people who need to be reachable at all times, I can think of many.  I'm just not one of them.

Cell phones are really handy, but I keep mine off probably 8 hours a day because of either work or school...I do call people back that don't leave messages but I refuse to text message, if it isn't important enough to call then I don't want my time wasted.

People have been living without them for thousands of years. Top tip have an answering machine.

I pay for the service a telephone provides whether it be a wired or wireless service.  Since I pay for it I will decide whether to use it or not.  The person on the other end will have to accept that.

I don't have a mobile phone.  My husband has one for work but when he's not working, it's off.  I only answer my home phone if I recognise the number calling.  I enjoy not talking to people I don't know on the phone!

  • tvalentinetvalentine Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 4,216

i call people more then when i get calls (prolly because i only give out my home number). It is usually when its an emergency or when im bored on a long trip and wanna talk for a few mins so i dont fall asleep at the wheel.(i use speakerphone and keep it on my dashboard, so i have both hands on the wheel)

I have 2. One for work and one personal.

The work phone sits on my desk unless I am on the road and in a staff car. (usually uncharged for weeks at a time) I usually never answer the work phone anyway. If its important, they will find me. (again, unless I'm on the road because my wife calls me on that one)

My personal phone generally sits in my car. I'll answer it if it rings and I'm not moving. Usually its my wife calling to deploy me to some misc errant. (There is a 1000 euro fine for driving and talking on the phone in Germany) Also if any of my kids need to get a hold of me for anything and I'm not in my office.

I use it mainly for the handy camera.

I'm like a lot of you, I'm not very impressed with them but its a necessary evil in todays world. I learned to hate all that junk in the 90's when I had to carry a phone and pager for work. It was very impressive for about a week but then it was nothing but a pain in my arse for 6 years.

So in terms of being obligated to answer it...lol...NOT. In fact I like to brag about how long my work phone can sit uncharged at a time. 6 weeks is my record.
