yeah, i'm not racist either  but i'm not to fond  with playing with asian players from other countries they have a tendency to act superior...i'd rather play with europeans,americans,canadians...

TR looks good but I don't know about being able to teleport anywhere and nearly everything is instanced. Sounds like it might be just a pretty Diablo 2.

Yeah, in CoH you weren't always cleaning out rat lairs, you were always cleaning out Hellions lairs. I just quit CoH because there was no content to keep me in the game. Not to mention big time balance issues that the developers have no plans to fix.

Thats really an oversimplified comparison.... it'd be like saying Half life pretty much sounds the same as Doom 2.

The depth of the missions in TR will be on a completely different level, in terms of challenge, cinematics, and storytelling quality.

When you raid that enemy ship, and leave right before it blows up... other players on the ground, will see a ship exploding in the atmosphere. If you rescue NPC's there will be more backup when you fight in another mission.... just as examples.

Really wouldn't worry about these types of concerns. You see Devs and Publishers learn from the games of the past as MMO's are definitely an evolving genre still coming into its age, this comes out even in the most underfunded or hyped games, people a few steps ahead of the game that really know the industry from when it started, and have been designing since then aka Lord British -- really has thought about all of these things before you have, as its become even more evident in his interview alongside Brad McQuaid. As a 2nd Generation MMO in general its going to be casual player friendly, that means even for high end content (WoW sucks but is a example here, 2nd Gen) City of Heroes was the ice-breaker for 2nd Gen games. It evolved the genre as EverQuest did in its 1st Gen time. It provided innovation and lived (something that was a no-no in the past) and acknowledged the casual gamer and got more returns for that acknowledgement than 1st gen games that were strictly based around time investment.

Since this data was analyzed all MMO's in development (major ones at least) sans Vanguard are gearing their games towards the new demographic -- casual gamers. Richard Garriot knows this bette than any dev team, is a smart , resourceful man, and has experience under his belt. The game just in its early alpha stages, and conceptual blurbs is leaps and bounds of innovation over games of the past, but yet retains enough familiarity to be easy to get into. Brad McQuad said it best in that MMOs will go through evolution, not revolution. Meaning they will improve, but not warp into new things out of nowhere.

Thats why anyone who claimed any of the new MMO's since City of Heroes were going to shatter the mold again in such a short time were, and will be sorely disappointed, even MAtrix Online of which I am an avid supporter, in all its innovation, doesnt 'break the mold, WoW doesnt, and Tabula Rasa won't -- but they will definitely having qualities of evolution. Tabula Rasa seems to be evolving the entire spectum of MMO design (note, again, not warping it) but taking pretty much every level and moving it up a notch. Matrix Online, evolves several areas, but seems to remain the same in others as far as I can tell right now. And WoW mixes both 1st and 2nd gen qualities.

Fittingly, TR is the final '2nd Gen MMO' as it is coming out at the end of 2005 (2006 = Vanguard and other 3rd gens) and as such seems to also be most innovative. By theme it mixes sci fi and fantasy, so it will appeal to both markets, and by design it will be very sound and intriguing, ...and very creative as you can tell already (http://tr.ogaming.com) theres a interview there with Carly something -- lots of good info.

In short, I think this game will definitely push the envelope some, and don't expect the universe but expect a good experience, maintained by a smart and capable dev team, who are definitely acknowleding casual and hardcore gamers alike (Garriot also specifically wants to inject the 'single player' experience into a MMO -- really giving a senes of adventure), at the end of 2005.

This game has the longetivity -- good luck to the team, thanks for reading myt rant :D

Well here's a list of features. It may not be much, but DG has specifically stated that they were not going to release any info that wouldn't 100% guaranteed be in the game.

    - Weapons and armor will not have their own stats. Rather, the equipment has slots where modules can be placed that give it stats. In this way, you can wear whatever you want and look however you want without worry... so there won't be masses of clones walking around. The actual effects of the modules have not been confirmed, but there will be many different kinds with different effects, and they will be craftable.

    - The more you use a weapon, and strike the finishing blow, the closer affinity the weapon gains to the user. Its unclear what benefits will be given, but there will be some.

    - Combat system... it will be based on the powers of mind, body and spirit. The enemy will be strong or weak to certain powers and players will have to actively switch abilities to keep up with changes in the enemy's defense, all while building up a Chi meter that allows special attacks. Its unsure exactly how it'll work, but the influence for the fighting comes from fighting games like Soul Caliber, so it will likely be fast paced. One of the devs mentioned that when backing up from an enemy, you'll start doing backflips and acrobatic moves, so combat will be very nice to look at.

    - Housing... everyone starts out with their own house at the very start. It can be decorated, upgraded, etc.

    - Players will be able to instantly teleport to their friend's location.

    - The game is divided into Missions, Battlefield, and Wargames.

    - Missions will be very dynamic. NPC's will fight alongside you, there will be multiple ways to complete a mission, and they will impact the world as a whole. For example, in the prison breakout missions, you can either sneak in or fight your way in. Both are viable, and when the NPC's are rescued, you'll come across them again as reinforcments on the battlefield.

    - Battlefields are open areas to explore and fight in. They'll be warzones and pretty dangerous.

    - Wargames will be varied... from the traditional duels or team battles, to sports like capture the flag or domination type games. All of it will be consentual.

-Though it won't be implemented at the start, there will be integrated voice chat in the game.

-Likely a tier based class system. It will be possible to "save" your character at a certain fork in the road, and come back and try another development path, but at the samet time retain the ability to go back to the point you were before, so experimentation is encouraged.

---- I'll add more when i think of it

    I just don't understand it- really i don't.

RG of UO-fame is making a mmorpg which is a bunch of instanced zones, player freedom will be confined by participating in one of 3 zones (eg. Battlefields etc) and seems intent on making a mmorpg that closely resembles a single-player rpg (but paradoxically online??)

RG- here'a thought. Take certain ideas from UO such as player freedom, evolve them  and create a real 2nd generation mmorpg. Because you will certainly burn in hell for Tabula Rasa!!

  • GenjingGenjing Member Posts: 441

The intent isn't so much to create an "online" single player game, as it is to advance the gameplay of the mmorpg so that it matches the quality of single player games... while creating a feeling of large scale warfare, and being part of a huge cause alongside thousands of others.

To do this, he drew inspiration from unexpected places; for example, the team played Soul Caliber as inspiration for the combat system. They broke down the fundamentals of what makes their favorite games fun, and worked from there. They put a lot of thought and research into the lore and build of the new universe, with RG even creating a written language for the aliens.

Remember, he was famous before Ultima Online. And i doubt he's interested in taking the easy path and simply making a new version of Ultima Online. Doing something completely new and unrelated to the past work that made you famous, is much riskier. I doubt he'd be doing this unless he really knew what he was doing.

I'm willing to be proved wrong and i hope i am.

Just at the moment all this talk of instances implies to me a move towards a "single player" mmorpg rather than a mmorpg of the same quality as a single player rpg. We all want the latter, but reading the FAQ i can't agree that is what we'll get without also getting the former (which i don't want- mmorps are supposed to be virtual worlds)

    Time will tell...
