Starting FFXI again...

It's been a little over 2 years since I've quit FFXI but...after 2 years of WoW , LotRO, and multiple trials and free MMOs I've decided to give FF a go again. I've grown tired of the whole questing routine and the simplicity of other games. The thing that I love about FF (which can also be a dread sometime...) is that partying with people is essential, as is the cooperation between party members in order to effectively level.  It added a challenge that I personally fail to find in other MMOs.  There are plenty things that I love about the game, but I suppose that is the main one for me coming back.

So, this brings me to a few basic questions that I'm sure have been answered in many a topic already, but I'm going to ask them again here in addition to going back over some of the topics in this board and see what I can come up with.

First Q: What is a good server to play on? I used to play on Lakshmi, and it seemed to be a pretty decent server. No telling how it is now though, so...I'm up for any suggestions from people who have been playing recently.

Next, I'm curious to know if there are any other players who are just now starting the game again or, perhaps for their first time. I have a few friends IRL who used to play but that was long ago and, none of them currently play anymore (and I doubt they'll be coming back to the game). So, would anyone possibly be interested in partying together? It would be awesome to try and get a static group together. Also, if any higher leveled players who are leveling up other characters or jobs want to group, that would be cool too :D

Finally, I'd like to know what  classes are generally in demand. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that White Mages and Warriors are still popular. I've been thinking about making a Mithra White Mage, but still haven't quite made the decision.

Any comments and the whatnot would be greatly appreciated :3

Congratulations on deciding that the inner urge to put yourself through pain and misery has won >_>

I play on lakshmi, have been for over a year, and while parties exist, expect to end up soloing with lfp up, especially if you play later in the evening. Though its not as difficult as it used to be to solo (not really due to any change in the game itself, but some of the newer classes seem built around the diea of soloing [with exception of course]), it gets dull quick so please don't sell yourself short and keep that lfp flag up x_x or start your own parties.

White mages aren't as in demand, but you can't go wrong with red mage (on lakshmi anyway, not sure if this is the case in other servers. we're pretty oddball) with white mage sub. scholar/white mage can be popular too at higher levels. The only class i think you'll go wrong playing is cor, and to some, ranger. expensive, and tend to get little attention (and in the case of cor, little understanding).

well congrats on going back I did awhile back ago and had to leave due to not enough free time, Asura is one of the two hot servers (the second one is escaping my memory at this time) and is the server I played on, you'll feel just as if you left the game as to I notice no difference in the people running about in the 3 major cities and the benefit is jeuno is not as lagged up as it once was (at least my take). White Mages and warriors are in demand for low level grinding parties yes but anything will do whatever you want go for it, sounds like someone from your old server is playing and from my take FFXI community is ranked up as the best in my own opinion as to everyone is nice , cheerful and helpful. You'll have no trouble finding a LS on asura as I had about 4 pearls and making new friends is just as easy when you get to the dunes as long as you are a social butterfly.

It's hard to find a good tank these days, from what I have seen.  Might want to try Pld, SE has buffed them pretty nicely since you have been gone.  Other than that, brd or cor will land you a party very fast, but it depends what class you like to play I guess.

Ugh, soloing >.< Just what I'm trying to get away from lol. Surprisingly though, my main character (a 30 something Galka RDM) can apparently, after two years of inactivity, be reactivated. So, I'm contemplating on doing that but, if I do, I may end up buying the server change thing. I'm still thinking hard on that. I kind of want to start a clean slate, but at the same time I don't just want to let my old guy go to waste.

    Thanks for your input!

Aww, sucks that you had to quit man. That was one of the reasons that I quit when I did actually. Not enough free time. I believe that the other really popular server though is Odin, from what I've read. I've heard positives and negatives with populated servers but, I would think it'd definitely be better for getting parties. If I start a new character though, I'm pretty sure I'm going with WHM to begin with, now though, I'm thinking about reactivating my old character and picking up from there. /shrug I do agree about the community in FFXI though, it is one of the better MMO communities from my experience. Hopefully though, whatever server I end up going to, I'll find a LS just as nice and helpful as my old one :D Thanks for your thoughts!

You can always try to get your real life friends to return and play with you!

Odin and Asura are the most populated servers.  I personally chose Odin because of its large population.  I recommend against Garuda.  I restarted on that server because I had a couple friends there but finding a PT from level 10-15 was impossible due to the low population in my level range.  Though on any server you play on, the level 70-75 has the greatest number of players online at any one time (Usually 500+ players).

Next, I'm curious to know if there are any other players who are just now starting the game again or, perhaps for their first time . . . I am in a fairly decent LS on Odin.  I have a level 24 MNK, 19 WAR, 5 WHM.  At level 30, I plan to return to Bastok for an advanced job.  The LS has a small, but dedicated, group of players who generally tend to play together or at least help each other out when within one another's level range.

Finally, I'd like to know what  classes are generally in demand. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that White Mages and Warriors are still popular. I've been thinking about making a Mithra White Mage, but still haven't quite made the decision.

I can almost certainly guarantee that you will have a party from level 10+ as a Warrior, Monk, or White Mage on Odin.  Advanced jobs that also get a lot of invites include Ninja, Paladin, and Dragoon.  Regardless of what job and server you're on, start in Bastok because you'll almost certainly level in Valkurm Dunes from level 10-20, followed by Qufim Island from 20-24ish.

Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.

So, finally bought a new Content ID yesterday and rolled a WHM on Asura.  Didn't have time to really play at the moment and still need to refamiliarize myself with the controls, but if anyone would like to look me up or add me as a friend the character's name is Shamandalie. Going to reactivate my RDM on Lakshmi too (name is Wolfiesan). Also, one of my friends that used to play is gonna rejoin with me, and I'm giving another friend my buddy pass so that he can try out the game. Thanks to everyone who posted and gave advice! Hope to see some of you in-game :D
