Im amazed people have been running the treadmill this long....

    Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7

  • samuraislyrsamuraislyr Member Posts: 122

Or they just don't want to waste money on a game they aren't playing and wait till the expansion pack comes out to pay for it again....

  • akritasakritas Member Posts: 76

The expansion is long time overdue. Most ppl have played through the game really. In our raid guild lots of raiders log on for the raids 4 times a week and log off after it. If you dont raid there isnt really much to do excpet mindless grinding

Or perhaps they are eagerly waiting it's arrival and are taking a break till then?  Come back after it's release and repost this please.

I think that's exactly it.  A few months prior to the BC release, many in my guild started to significantly cut back on their play-time.   Some even stopped logging in completely.   It's more just a case of saving up energy for when the new content is released.

In fact, things are really beginning to taper off again for my guild.  We've cut back on the raid schedule a lot.  Most people logging on are just grinding up old alts to 70, or getting basic gear sets on those alts to make the 70-80 run a little easier.  In fact, I'm pretty close to taking a break too.  However, I know as soon as the expansion is ready, I'll be back in full force (along with everybody else).

The Burning Crusade released in January of 2007. What happened in February? No, I'm not looking at the chart this moment, however, if you follow the model, what happens after every release?

A quick study of the chart shows that in correlation to its releases, something in Jan of 2007 and something in Jan of 2008 causes their numbers to spike.

Obviously, the Jan 2007 data corresponds to "The Burning Crusade".

I am not currently playing WoW, so I am currently unaware what happened in January of this year.

On a side note, some of the drop off may be related to economic issues.

And finally, WoW seems to be building a heavy "front end" position for their market. I say this because it appears that they target January and February for their "subscriber spike" and anticipate a drop off all the way through Christmas. NOT ironically, Wrath of the Lich King is slotted for November.

...why...that's just in time for a January subscriber spike.

Not only do I agree with what others have said regarding saving up energy for the next content update, if you look at this chart it's a bit like the stock market. Rises and dips but steadily going up.

Oh no!!! it’s summer time and WoW has dropped to only 8 million active accounts.  The chrat is a great point, it you note the activity at the same times last year you’ll see the same drop.  Its nice out side, stop trolling and enjoy it.

It also should be noted a few new MMOs are out or coming out and it will take a bit for people to accept they’re a flop and come back to WoW.  I know a lot of people don’t like this but WoW is the best thing out there and if the haters stopped and played the game they would see it.

I’m currently playing WoW and I can’t wait for WotLK, there isn’t anything out there that I would leave WoW for.  I want to try some of the new games but only when they get the bugs worked out.  Once WoW drops bellow 3million subs I might start to get worried and I know once the weather turns the player pop will go from a lot to even more.

They are losing so much audience that just today Blizzard launched a new European WoW server to better accomondate the tiny audience they still have left. WoW must be dying.

And here is another on from germany:

Number 2, 3, 8 and 11 ALL Wow products and not ONE other MMORPG in range there.
These mean NEW players btw !

Yes people do use that site as official and they dont care to research how the numbers are gathered.

Its gathered by players running a mod who counts characters logged in at the time the mod is run, now run that mod every 10 mins on both hord and allaince and we get accurate numbers how ever most realms get a mod run 1-3 times a day so for example, horde numbers are counted once on day 1 at 11am, the alliance are counted at 1pm and 8pm... ask your self how many logged in outside of these hours? and how many the mod missed?

WoW Census is a well known source of information and very popular too.  And you forgot to mention this from him:

"At this point, as far as we know, there really isn't anything left other than what we already have to keep folks playing until Wrath of the Lich King comes out."

Its just confirms what  many fellows had already noticed.

There are plenty of people playing WoW that desperatly want a new game or even expansion to come out.  One game should not dominate the market like this.

That being said, WoWcenus is a terribly unaccurate tool for population counting.  I would imagine the drop in populations is due to people not running the mod more than it is people not playing.  WoW continues hold 3 spots in the top ten best selling software list each month.

I think some people check these charts every day, cheering every time there's a downward spike in activity.  It's pretty sad.

If you've ever lead or been responsible for recruitment in a raiding guild - in any MMO - and I've lead guilds in several, you would know this is the norm - summer comes, activity drops.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the imagined waning popularity of the game.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

    Well said.

This happens every year, people arn't as active in the summer months.

I dunno about you, but when its a beautiful, nice warm day outside, I'm much less likely to stay inside and play an MMO all day.

This is also why a lot of the big hype MMOs almost always project a fall release date. The holiday season being right around the corner is also another reason.

So people should not be active at the last year summer too.

There is nothing wrong with this chart data and i know WoW community. Many dont even check how is the day.

Of course, you can always install WoW Cencus and help increase it.

    OMG, here we go again.

Every few months another person finds that bloody census site and posts here about how figures are lower than blizzard are saying or they are losing subscriptions hand over fist, AAAAARRRRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!

If they were taking a census on EVERY server, EVERY five seconds, 24 hours a day, EVERY day of the year, the figures may almost be accurate, but they don't and they aren't, so please, please, please stop with these threads!!!!!

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

I dont think its so much on them loosing population. I think its more of the quality of the population.

Wow has turned into a casual kids game.

One expansion in almost four years; what do they expect.  A person can only level a toon to 70 so many times.
