Master Sandbox MMO List

donjndonjn Member UncommonPosts: 816

I want to keep a running list of "sandbox" MMO's so we can refer back to it when needed.

Released or not, here is what I have:

  • Ultima Online
  • Eve Online
  • Roma Victor
  • A Tale in the Desert
  • Runescape
  • Second Life
  • Fallen Earth
  • Saga of Ryzom (on hiatus, may return soon)
  • Darkfall (might still happen)
  • Mortal Online (coming soon)
  • Wurm

Is this it, or is there more? If you have more, I will add them to the list.

    Is AC1 a sandbox one?

I would consider AC1 more of a hybrid MMO. It's themed and the dungeons don't change. Still a player can train a character any way he wishes. All skill paths are open to him.

Star Wars Galaxies is still very much a sandbox mmo.

second life.  you said MMO not MMORPG.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

    How so?

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

If SWG is a sandbox , still  ( it was one of the greatest), then WoW is a sandbox aswell.

While I personally hate F2p games Mabinogi is sandbox and quite advanced.

It uses a Anime art style its probably the best F2p game out.

OH! and Runescape is also if you don't mind the sixteen bit graphics LOL!

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

Second Life is 100% sandbox but not an RPG, Runescape is a 2D Sandbox MMORPG, and I'm not sure but I think SWG has lost most of its sandbox qualities.

    Waiting for:

    -Games-
    -Re-Launch of Hellgate:London US/EU Servers
    -Diablo 3

    -A PvE centric MMORPG with-
-Fast paced twitch-action combat that requires hand-eye coordination, where you can manually aim your attacks instead of having to acquire/lock target(s) first.
-FPS-style WASD and mouse control that determine your overall success when attacking or defending.

Ah doh, you have character classes in SWG now and a level progression.  BZZZZT, it is a sandbox no longer!  You get the boobie prize.

How is SL not a roleplaying game? Heck, I'd say some of the roleplaying that goes on in that game is miles ahead of the roleplaying most other games involve.

No it is not.  It is a class/level grinder with a loot-based economy.  The ONLY thing resembling sandbox left in SWG is player housing and cities.  That's it and that's all.

Infiniti Earth is a sandbox game deep into development.

    Fallen Earth as well.

There's some RPG combat sims in SL that are pretty good. Some of combat Systems like DCS2 are well done and fun. More fun than SWG NGE TBH.

There are no true sandbox games on the market.  They all have some dev created areas that are protected that are a major part of the game.

Now if your talking quasi-sandbox, you need to add Shadowbane to that list.

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

    earthrise might be a sandbox

  • er99er99 Member CommonPosts: 101

the game is still in development. if it releases with all the concepts and features the devs are saying they will incorporate...it will top the list.
