I used to play FFXi about a year ago and i didn't have the time available to commit to grouping so i left I just reinstalled to come back and since i have been gone for more than 3 months i have to buy a new copy of the game so i can play again this is just obsurde.

I have never heard of such a thing. I own the game why do i have to buy the game again.

I agree.  I think that's a joke of a way to handle the game as well.  I played FF at launch and have thought of returning to the game a few times, but the fact that I'd need to go out and pay again is ... well... it's crap, tbh.

yeah i'm not buying the game again when i already have it you think the monthy sub would be enough for them. But making you buy the game again is just stupid.

Yeah this is a much criticized aspect of FFXI, but since they have stored characters longer and have events to revive the oldest of characters.  I have left my character inactive for 6 months at a time and he is always there when I go back now.  Also you can get the game with all xpacs besides the most recent (one game release back) for like 3.99$...

You don't have to buy the game again...just reactivate ur account!  If its not there you may have to call Square to recover it, and it always costs an addition $13 for reactivation.  Its always been this way for 6 yrs so getting upset now is absurd, specially since you agreed to this when you signed up the first time...heh

I wonder where you and BlackWatch got the information that you need to buy another copy of the game in order to return after three months.

You don't have to buy a new copy of the game to return to FFXI. Unless you previously cancelled your PlayOnline account (not just the content IDs with your characters), you can just log back into PlayOnline and reactivate your content ID to play FFXI.

Honestly... could we please just start a thread for all people to gripe about this problem?

I started my account in 2003 (at launch), played 3 months then quit.  I used the same account for the Xbox 360 launch, played 3 months then quit again.  I reactivated my account back in April and I'm still using my original account...

How did I do it?  I had documented my login information inand just re-entered it into PlayOnline.  It told me to confirm my contact information each time, and I did that using the PlayOnline Viewer.  Voila!  I was well on my way to playing this game.

Honestly, the more frequently I see posts like this the more I think that some people are just incompetent and don't know what they're doing because there are hundreds of people who are able to reactivate every year to try it out again who don't have any problems what-so-ever.

Here's a tip: call support.  They'll be far more helpful and sympathetic toward your cause than a bunch of forum readers will be . . . because every month we have 2 or 3 people come in and say "I can't get my account working!  Help!"  Since we don't know the circumstances we can't possibly help.  And if you're really that upset over it go give the game a bad review because that'll do a lot more than making a single forum post (yes, regardless of my slightly sarcastic and arrogant tone overall in this post, I'm serious because players actually gauge games based off their rating).

Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.

I got the idea that i had to buy the game again from the ffxi website under there FAQ's

You can become a member again after unsubscribing from PlayOnline. If you return to PlayOnline within three months of unsubscribing, you can restart the same service without having to complete the regular registration process. In this case, use the "For PlayOnline Members Only" when launching PlayOnline after a reinstall to log back in using your existing PlayOnline ID and PlayOnline Password. If you return to PlayOnline three months after unsubscribing, you must register a new PlayOnline account. This means you must purchase a new copy of the software to obtain a new set of registration codes.

This is right from the FFXi official website.

    Oh wow! :(

When you quit, did you cancel your PlayOnline account entirely, or did you just deactivated the Content ID of your character?

A lot of times players do not actually cancel their PlayOnline accounts and they can log back in right after reinstalling. There really is no reason for people to cancel their PlayOnline accounts over just FFXI Content IDs - PlayOnline itself is a free service, but I don't think everyone understood that when they were cancelling their subscription.

Sure, I hope BlackWatch only cancelled the FFXI account too. :)
