Anybody knows of a good open world MMO?  (not instanced like Guild Wars or Tabula Rasa or ... AoC)

I'm looking to replacing WoW (played 3 years)

Lord of the rings online and Vanguard both have open world (Vanguard is alot more open)..

cant think of any other recent ones sadly..

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Actually, that is incorrect. EQ2 has multiple zones which need to be loaded when you unter them as well as some instances.

Vanguard on the other hand has zero instances and is still the largest world in any MMO.

The difference is that EQ2 only uses true instances for dungeons, in much the same way WoW does.

The only game that handles instances the same way AoC does, from what I understand about AoC mechanics, is Tabula Rasa and, to a lesser extent, Guild Wars. Everything else should be a safe bet.

I havent played EQ2 past the trial but from what Ive heard the zones are the exact same way as Tabula Rasa and AoC... When there is alot of people in a zone the game will create a new instance of it to spread out the people...

An open world means that there are no loading between zones and there arent multiple versions of the same zone on a server... Games like WoW, LotrO and Vanguard have a more or less open world (LotrO have more  instances than the other 2)

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

If you didnt open a new map you could have thousands of peoples trying to farm the same mobs you are. No thanks on that good sir.

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

As far as I know, EQ2 doesn't fuction like AoC. It will not make multiple instances to accomidate for many players in a zone. All fit in the zone. However, they do use loading screens.

I have no clue what to suggest to you, sorry.

    Blessings,

    MMO migrant.

That's actually not true, that title belongs to Vanguard.

Vanguard is the largest seamless world out right now. There's no zoning into dungeons. There's no zoning into cities. There are 0 instances.

Vanguard = huge open world with no instances!

    best game out right now!

    Remember Old School Ultima Online

To the OP I highly suggest Vanguard. I too was looking for an open world for some immersion style exploration play and found Vanguard fit the bill. I believe the only instances in the game are some of the raid level stuff.

As for EQ2, I can say it is decidedly instanced in at least dungeons and cities as well some zone shifts. Also, it does in fact create multiple instances of a zone dending on the number of people. However, it is nowhere near like AoC and is still a worthy game.

But if you are looking for a place to go exploring, Vanguard will do the trick. If you can't stand some of the bugs they are working out I'd suggest LotR. And that one has a trial version. It also feels a little more polished and "wow like" if that is what you are looking for. (Which I'm not a hater of)

Thanks for all the input guys.  yes I was looking for an open world to explore, sry for the confusion.  I've tried LotrO and my g/f was a GM there for a while and we won't be going back.  Anyway, I'm definitly gonna check out Vanguard.
