I heard that this was one of the awesome old games and i was thinking of trying but i wanted to know what pop is and if they actually have regular updates? does it plan to go anywhere?

I think you should check out the free trial at the least. I still have an active subscription, and I still enjoy the game. The pops are low, but most guilds have consolidated into a few large size guilds. Ask questions on the general chat channel, and you'll find lots of people willing to answer them and help you out. Get into one of the few big guilds remaining, and you'll be well on your way.
The game is still updated every month. Next month is a big patch, it is the 100th update. It sounds like it will be one of the biggest updates ever besides the expansions. They are adding a faction system, new loot, new spells, along with the usual new quests and new monsters.
if someone wants to start out on dt iam willing to help a bit. got a lvl 220+ there.
I've been playing the 14 day trial curently. Use to play back in 2000.
Still a great game. Graphics are super dated but I've never been one to base a game on its looks.

I missed the Beta, but I played when it was released until 2003 (on and off).
from what I remember most
PLUSES == archers / crossbow users can fire arrows and bolts that followed a ballistic path (very cool effect), third person POV with full chase cam that you can control, optional first person POV
MINUSES == PK seemed to be imbalanced and they never got it right
however from what I remember from late-1999-2003:
A) mages were all-powerful since
1) they could use bolts (War magic) at close or far range, killing with 1-2 hits
2) could wear armor, so can sustain more than a few hits from warriors or archers
3) could apply the protection spells
4) naturally were anti-tank/warrior since they can bypass the warrior's shield
5) drains (of life energy etc) / harms (within range)
tank/warriors:
1) have a shield, so are naturally anti-archer
2) had some weapons that ignore protection spells so they were decent against mages
3) shields did not block mage bolts, so are vulnerable to mages
C) archers:
1) were vulnerable to both mages at close range
2) and vulnerable to warriors (weaker melee defense and no shield)
3) no strong attack at long or short range, though can fire rapidly
4) I remember there was one bow that can ignore protection spells too
5) shields block arrows, so their attacks against warriors are weak
So if anything, mages had an advantage over both archers and warriors when the original design (from what I read should have been:
MAGES > WARRIOR > ARCHER > MAGES
a power triangle. So my point is, mages were too strong.
What do you have to add?
OP just takes a lot of time to start playing and patience. You will need to work very hard to get good gear and levels and skills to compete in PVP. But if you do not like PVP this game still in my opinion has the best PVE content and fun ever created for a MMO. Good luck.
I am having withdraw issues. I sold my accounts last summer for a good bit and the game has changed so much. I will not come back but wish I had the patience to do so as this game takes lots of time to get back in the game. I had 5 200+ characters and 1 max mage, and so much of this game was about having fun no matter what you did. Doing quests to get simple items that looked cool for your house or going to PVP.
I sure wish they would remake AC 1 into AC3 with updated graphics used in LOTRO. Make the game a complete clone but redo everything and add even new stuff ideas on top that and it would be the most successful MMORPG ever released. But the CEO and top Execs. do not think so. I would bet they would beat out WOW for top subs 10 mill + if they redid AC 1 into a new AC3 with those updated graphics and ideas but kept everything the same as it is now.
As soon as they do remakes they change everything that worked and worked well. This is why I say keep it all the same but introduce new ideas and other fun stuff.
Who let you in the VIP section?
PK is more balanced now. Mages don't own so easily anymore. Melee and missle weapons had their damage raised a long time ago. Melees also have a shield now that reduces war magic damage.
Bow actually does the most damage now PvM, though war and sword are very close behind.
Turbine tweaked the skill system. Now the skills that cost the most (bow, sword, and war) cause the most damage. The skills the cost the least (dagger, staff) cause the least damage. The other skills are in between based on their cost.
Less than a year before I left - PvP weapons were balanced (Oct 2004)

I regret a little that I had left
I found this link just recently ... Very cool that a lot of "PvP imbalance" stuff that I wondered about was addressed.
Yes, they could wear armor... but, it wasn't as great a help since you couldn't spec in any kind of defense (which is what armor is really paired with). I still laugh at the fact that mages could wear armor. My mage was slow as hell until I could max out her strength and speed/run.
I highly recommend it. As old as it is I would say it has some of the best gameplay and a truly skill based PvP system with many unique twists. I praise this game for as long as it has stayed alive and hope the hardcore fanbase that it shelters will continue to support it for it is truly a great game.
